30.
Ah, the first day of school. The single worst day a teenager has to experience.
"So what's your homeroom again?" Sophia asked as we pushed open the doors that led into the main hall.
"History with Mr. Yukimura." I answered while searching for my new locker.
"What do you have?" I mutter as I successfully found it.
"Art with Mrs. Newall."
I nodded to show her I was listening. Someone came up beside us and Sophia's eyes grew wide. "I'll see you at lunch Syd!" she called as she stalked off down the hall.
"Soph what-" I trailed off as I turned to look at my new locker neighbour. Liam.
"You have got to be kidding me." I mumbled. Liam looked over to me, sending me a scowl before he looked back to his locker.
"Hey Syd," Mason greeted, coming to stand beside me, "I was just showing Liam this and thought I should ask you." he announced, seeming oblivious to the tension between Liam and I.
He held up an old looking book, "I got this from some guy in Germany, it was like 200 bucks." He explained tilting it so I could see the picture. "Have you ever seen one of these before?" he questioned, showing me a picture of a Berserker.
I stole a glance at Liam, before shaking my head. "Don't think so." I lied, fully knowing that Liam had not told Mason the truth yet, "We should get to class." I announced, trying to change the subject. The boys agreed and the 3 of us entered the classroom.
"Everyone take your seats please!" Mr. Yukimura yelled from the front of the room.
I took a seat in front of Mason, as Liam stood beside a desk his wide eyes staring at a girl I hadn't seen before.
"Oh great." he grumbled. Mason and I stared at him confused.
Liam looked around desperately for another seat, when he wasn't successful in finding one he turned to me. "Sydney, switch seats with me." he demanded, urgency in his voice.
I scrunched up my face as I turned to look at him, "What? No." I shot back.
"Liam!" Mr Yukimura called "You aren't going to stand there all day are you?"
Liam looked as if he was thinking, before he nodded his head, "Uh yeah maybe."
"The whole semester?"
"Maybe." Liam admitted.
Mr. Yukimura let out a small sigh, turning back to the board, "Liam, have a seat."
Liam looked defeated as he set his stuff down taking a seat between Mason and the new girl.
After being seated for a few moments Liam began to shift uncomfortably in his seat. I looked back to see him make a disgusted face at the gum-once in the girl's mouth, but now stuck to his ass. I stared at the girl in shock as Mason let out a small laugh. This was going to be a long class.
And the excitement didn't stop coming. About half way through the class the guy who was seated beside me turned around to face Liam. "Hey man, do you have a pencil I can borrow?"
Liam furrowed his brows. "You didn't bring a pencil on the first day?"
The boy shrugged, "Mine just broke and I forgot-"
"-Here." I whispered, handing him one of my extra ones to avoid Liam giving him any more slack.
He looked over to me with a smile. "Thanks." he whispered, taking the pencil from my hand,
I smiled in return as Liam clenched his jaw, his eyes filled with anger.
---
As the bell rang, signalling that it was lunch period, I began to stuff my books into my locker. A few moments later, Liam and Mason arrived, Liam now in a pair of gym shorts.
I tried to resist the smile that grew one my face as I recalled his bad luck. As I finished putting my books away, I looked over to Liam who was now alone. He started to put in his locker combination when he noticed my stares.
Before I could say something to him another voice cut me off. "Nice shorts." It was the girl from History.
Liam looked over to her, pursing his lips, "Yeah, thanks." He muttered. "You know, I was wondering if-"
I turned away from them, slamming my locker shut as I merged into the group of students as I made my way toward the cafeteria.
"Hey!" a voice called behind me, causing me to pause. I quickly turned to see the boy who borrowed my pencil.
"I believe this is your pencil." he smiled, extending his hand with my pencil.
I waved it off, giving him a warm smile, "Keep it," I announced, "I have plenty."
He smiled once again, pocketing the pencil. "I'm Holden by the way." he said sticking out his hand for me to shake.
I placed my hand in his giving it a small shake. "I'm Sydney."
"Well Sydney, I guess I'll see you around then."
"See you around." I mumbled with a smile on my face as he walked away.
Just as I was about to make for the cafeteria, I was stopped again. "Sydney McCall." This time I turned to see the boy from the other night, Theo. He wore a warm smile on his face as he stopped beside me. "Scott's little sister?" he clarified.
I nodded, giving him a small smile, "That would be me."
Theo grinned as he examined my face, "You grew up gorgeous." he commented, causing a blush to rise on my cheeks.
I let out a small laugh, "Thank you." I muttered, trying to hide the redness on my cheeks. Before it could get any more awkward, I redirected the conversation, "Are you happy to be back in Beacon Hills?" I questioned, slightly moving out of the way so other students could pass.
Theo nodded, joining me by the lockers, "It's different." he noted, his eyes quickly scanning the halls.
I smiled, "Well if you ever need anything, a friend or a BHHS connoisseur, just let me know." I joked.
He cracked a smile as he pulled out his phone, "Well why don't you give me your number, that way you can help me navigate being back."
My cheeks reddened once again as I took his phone from his hand. This was the first boy I had really spoken to since Liam, and I wasn't really sure how I felt about it. I punched in my number, handing the phone back to him with a small smile.
"I should get going." I announced, knowing Sophia was waiting for me in the cafeteria.
Theo grinned once again, "See you around, Sydney."
I smiled, giving him a small wave as I made my leave, "Bye, Theo."
---
"I told you he was up to something." Stiles whispered as him, Liam and I hid crouched behind a bush.
Although I liked Theo, and trusted him enough to give him my number, it appeared that not everyone else did. The prime player in this distrust being none other than Stiles.
"We just spent 3 hours watching this guy play video games in his bedroom." Liam shot back as we continued to follow Theo through the woods, "He better be trying to cover up a mass murder."
"Let's find out." Stiles whispered, as all three of us rose to our feet, following after Theo from a safe distance.
"It's freezing out here!" I complained as we walked through the dark forest.
"Sydney, I did not bring you out here to hear you complain the whole time." Stiles snapped, turning to look at me with a disapproving look.
I glared at him as I wrapped my arms around my body to preserve some warmth, "Why exactly did you bring me? " I questioned.
"Well," Stiles announced, "I just thought that If Theo some how found out we were following him, maybe he won't be so hard on us if you're here." he admitted.
I scoffed as I looked over at him,"Are you kidding me?" I snapped, "I really wish you would stop exploiting the fact that I'm female in order to save your own ass."
Stiles put his hands up in defense, "You should take that as a compliment," he exclaimed, "If you were ugly you would not be out here."
I rolled my eyes as we continued walking, "Well it might be a bit awkward if he sees me out here." I noted.
Stiles looked back at me in confusion, "And why is that?"
I gave him a sheepish look, "I may or may not have given Theo my number earlier today."
Liam and Stiles both looked to me, speaking simultaneously, "You what?" they demanded, Stiles glaring at me as Liam just looked slightly upset.
Stiles shook his head in disappointment, "Any boy, and it had to be Theo!" he snapped, turning back to the path.
"I was trying to be nice!" I argued, shivering as another breeze sent chills through my body.
Stiles ignored me as he kept walking. But Liam on the other hand turned toward me, "Here take my sweater." Liam offered, peeling the fabric off of his body.
"No," I protested, "You'll freeze."
"I'm fine, just take it." he ordered, shoving the sweater toward me. I sighed before taking the maroon coloured sweater from his hands, wrapping the warm fabric around my body. I tried to ignore the fact that it smelled like him, a smell that I had missed.
"Okay," Stiles cut in, turning to look at us, "So if you two are done, let's get going."
I sighed as we continued walking, my eyes surveying the dark woods against us. I hated this idea..
"You still have his scent?" Stiles questioned.
"Don't need it." Liam answered, pointing down to a set of footprints.
As Stiles and I continued walking, Liam started to slow down. "What are you doing?" Stiles asked turning to face Liam.
Liam had a guilty look on his face as he looked up, "I just remembered I was supposed to meet Mason at the school gym."
"Well why don't you just tell him." Stiles suggested.
"Tell him what?" Liam wondered.
"Anything."
"Well I cant just tell him anything." Liam protested.
"Why not?"
"Because I still haven't told him everything." Liam explained throwing up his arms.
"Still?" Stiles asked, watching the younger boy, "We told you it was okay."
"I know." Liam answered, "But, it's not that easy. It's a lot to accept."
"I haven't told Sophia either." I admitted trying to make Liam feel better about the whole situation.
"They watched my dad blow up a Berserker with a land mine, I think the ground work pretty much been laid for acceptance. Scott and I, we've been through this. More than once, it's not easy okay. But it's just always better when they know." Stiles said before turning and heading further up the trail.
"Well what if he freaks out! What if he doesn't want to talk to me! What if he stabs me with something silver, or what if-" Liam's voice cut off with a thud.
Both Stiles and I turned around, confused to see no sign of Liam. We took a few steps, only to find him at the bottom of a hole.
"What the hell are you doing?" Stiles chastised, shooting Liam a dirty look. Liam threw his hands up in the air in defeat.
"I should-there he is, stop screwing around!" Stiles ordered before leaving to follow after Theo.
I rolled my eyes at Stiles and I bent down, extending my hand to Liam to help pull him from the hole. Once he was free, the two of us followed after Stiles who was now "hidden" behind a log.
"You need to find better hiding spots." I observed as Liam and I rejoined him.
Stiles motioned for us to be quiet as he pulled us closer."Try to get his scent." he instructed Liam, pointing to Theo who was standing on a bridge only a few metres away from us.
"Get anything?" he whispered, his eyes locked on Theo.
Liam shook his head "Soap. It's nice, smells good." I look over at Liam shaking my head as I tried to stifle a laugh.
"Not his soap!" Stiles snapped "His emotional state."
"Oh, yeah okay." Liam whispered. "He's uh- he's sad."
"Sad?" Stiles echoed.
"Uh yeah," Liam nodded, "Not just sad, it's more like grief."
"Grief?" Stiles repeated as he tried to figure out what was going on.
I watched as Theo took a single flower and dropped it into the creek.
"Oh my God." Stiles whispered, grabbing Liam and I as he turned away from the scene, "Go!" he ordered, "Now!"
"Why?" I questioned, looking back to where Theo was.
"Just go." Stiles encouraged pushing us back in the direction we came.
"It's the bridge where they found his sister." he explained once we were out of Theo's ear shot.
"What sister?" Liam questioned.
"The one who got lost and died of exposure." Stiles explained. "He's leaving a flower for her."
"That doesn't sound very evil to me" I pointed out, "It's actually kind of heartbreaking."
"I know." Stiles shot back, glaring at me as he continued to push me forward, "No one says a word of this to-" He froze, all of us coming to a halt as a figure appeared in front of us. And of course, the figure was none other than Theo Raeken.
He hopped down from the small ridge so he was directly in front of us. "What are you guys doing?"
Liam let out a growl as Theo took a few steps closer to us. My hand shot out, landing on Liam's chest to stop him from moving any closer.
"Woah." Theo breathed, putting his hands up In surrender. "Why do I get the feeling this kid's tougher than he looks."
"Only when we let him off his leash." Stiles retorted, still suspiciously eying Theo.
Theo then turned to me, giving me a small wink. "Sydney, nice to see you again." he greeted, shooting a grin in my direction.
I gave him a sheepish smile as I nodded, "Nice night for a walk." I commented, glancing around at the forest to try and play off the reason we were really out here.
Theo nodded, "Stiles, we were in little league together why are you so suspicious of me?" he asked, clearly not buying my walk in the woods cover.
"Cause of these." Stiles answered, handing Theo two pieces of paper. "One's a speeding ticket from 8 years ago and one's a signature from a transfer form to Beacon High... they're different."
"Oh yeah," Theo nodded, analyzing the paper, "They look a little different."
"No, they're totally different," Stiles argued, "Signed by two different people."
"So my dad's not my dad?" Theo laughed slightly at Stiles' accusation."Like he's an imposter?"
"Something like that."
"Who do you think I am?" Theo questioned.
"We don't know yet." Stiles said shrugging.
Theo let out a small laugh, "Want me to give you a DNA sample or something?" he joked.
"Well no, I don't have anything from fourth grade to match it to." Stiles shot back, proving the fact that he definitely would have done a DNA test.
"You know what Stiles, I came back here for Scott. But I also came back for you." Theo admitted, "Someone like you, someone who's willing to walk into the woods in the middle of the night to protect his friends. I don't have anyone like that, Scott does. You all do." he said looking over to Liam and I.
"I know I'm in the right place. I'm meant to be here. I'm meant to be a part of this pack."
---
Once we finally made it back to the car, we were all shocked to see Scott leaning against his bike.
"Find anything?" he questioned, giving us all amused look.
"Nope." Stiles answered, not wasting any time before getting into the Jeep.
"I fell in a hole." Liam announced as if it was the most exciting thing that had happened all night, which quite frankly it was.
"It was the bridge where his sister died wasn't it?" Scott asked, approaching the Jeep window.
"Yes it was. Very embarrassing, we're going to leave now." Stiles sighed as he attempted to start the car. When it didn't start he let out some curse words under his breath.
"Liam do me a favour, get in the car and turn the ignition when I say."
Liam nodded as he climbed into the driver's seat, while I got into the passenger seat. "Are you going to tell Mason tonight?" I questioned.
"Yeah." Liam said quietly, not bothering to look at me.
"Well then I need your help."
"Try it!" Stiles called from outside. Liam turned the key, when the car didn't rev to life Liam turned to look at me.
"With what?"
"Telling Sophia."
