An awkward silence filled the air as Liam and I sat on opposite sides of the couch, waiting for Scott who had run upstairs to changed into clothes that weren't drenched in gasoline. After escaping from the bon-fire rather unscathed, we had received word that there had been another attempt on Brett's life, along with his little sister.
Liam was the first one to speak since we had arrived back at my house, and when he did, his voice was quiet and full of regret, "I was an asshole," he admitted, turning to look at me.
I glanced over at him for a moment, crossing my arms over my chest before jutting out my chin and looking back toward the kitchen, away from him.
Liam let out an agitated sigh, "You're just going to ignore me?"
"If I remember correctly," I started, looking back over at him with narrowed eyes, "You told me to leave you the hell alone...ring any bells?" I sniped.
His faced fell as he moved closer to me on the couch, "I shouldn't have treated you like that," He agreed, his pleading eyes meeting mine, "I was overwhelmed, and on edge and I took it out on you." he explained, his voice dropping slightly, "I'm not worth three million anymore...I'm worth eighteen."
My heart dropped as my jaw almost fell open. No wonder he was on edge, the bounty on his life had just gone up by fifteen million dollars, "Liam-"
Before I could finish, Scott came rushing down the stairs, two helmets in hand. "Kira found Brett," he explained, automatically handing the extra helmet to Liam, before making his way into the kitchen. "They're fine but we gotta go."
Liam and I shared a look before both standing up, following after my brother. "More assassins?" I questioned, worry hovering in my voice.
Scott didn't turn around as he continued toward the back door, "Maybe a lot more."
"Different than the one's who just tried to set us on fire?" Liam asked, his own voice full of fear.
Scott had arrived at the back door at this point, and he was already reaching to pull it open, "I think so, yeah."
Instead of following Scott to the door, Liam had paused in the middle of the kitchen, a look of hesitation on his face. I stopped beside him, almost running into the back of him when he came to a halt.
Scott noticed Liam had stopped following, and slowly closed the door before turning around, making his way back toward us with an understanding look on his face. "How about I take you home?" he asked softly, picking up the helmet Liam had just set down.
Guilt and disappointment covered Liam's face as he spoke, "I'm not like you," he admitted.
Scott nodded lightly, keeping his eyes locked on his beta, "Not yet." he encouraged.
"I don't mean I'm not strong or that I'm never going to learn to be in control," Liam paused, letting out a small sigh, "I mean everything else. You and your friends, and even Sydney, you try to protect everyone," his voice sounded sad at this point, "Have you been doing this the whole time? I mean how are you all still alive?"
Scott's face fell ever so slightly, maybe not enough for Liam to noticed, but I instantly caught the way his eyes saddened, "Not all of us are." he admitted.
I felt a pang in my chest. Of course Liam didn't know about Allison or Aiden, or Boyd or Erica, and everyone in between.
Scott cleared his throat, pulling himself from his sad thoughts as he turned to me, "Well then Syd, " he breathed, giving me a small smile, "Looks like its your lucky day."
I could see Liam's face fall from the corner of my eye as my eyes grew wide, "Seriously?" I questioned, not believing my brother was willingly letting me join.
Scott nodded, "We need all the help we can get," he explained, "I'll call Braeden and ask her to bring something for you." And by something, I assumed he meant a gun.
I was still in shock as Scott handed the extra helmet to Liam, "I'll take you home," he said softly, giving Liam a reassuring smile before looking back to me, "I'll be home in 10 minutes, be ready."
As he and Liam made for the back door, Liam turned to me, "Be careful," he pleaded, his eyes softening.
I nodded, a small smile coming to my face, "I'll see you tomorrow." I promised.
---
Scott turned off his bike outside of the Animal Clinic and helped me climb of the back, taking off his helmet before looking at me, "I want you to be really careful," he ordered, regret already covering his face, "I shouldn't even be letting you come."
I pulled my own helmet off, looking to my brother with a reassuring smile, "Scott, I can handle myself." I promised, "And besides, like you said, we need all the help we can get."
A shaky sigh fell from my brother's lips as we made our way into Deaton's. I knew he hated me put anywhere in danger, but we both knew deep down that things were getting serious, and an extra pair of hands, especially with a gun in them, was useful.
As we entered the clinic, Kira was there to greet us, her arms instantly around my brother. "Are you okay?" Scott asked, pulling back to analyze her face.
Kira nodded, her arms still around my brother as she spoke,"I'm fine." she answered, her eyes then drifting back to me, "Where's Liam?"
"He wasn't feeling well." I lied, attempting to cover for Liam. Kira didn't say anything, but instead nodded, pressing another kiss to Scott's lips. I shifted uncomfortably as I watched the two, desperately waiting for them to hurry up.
Luckily, Scott pulled back, holding Kira's face in his hands, "Did you find him?" he asked, "Did you find Brett."
"Actually," Kira breathed, reaching to grab Scott's hand, "I think I found all of them." With that, she turned and began toward the back of the clinic where the exam room was. I wordlessly followed after her and my brother, eager to see who she was referring to.
When we entered the room, we were met with the scene of about half a dozen people standing around the exam table. Brett stood with a younger girl beside him, and older woman at the front of the group.
"Satomi," Kira greeted, "This is who I was telling you about." she announced, turning her head to look at Scott.
The woman turned around, the smallest of smiles coming to her face, "I know who Scott McCall is."
The girl beside Brett spoke next, fear still presiding on her face from whatever had happened earlier, "Are we safe here?"
Brett glanced up, his eyes landing on me momentarily before moving to my brother, awaiting his answer.
Scott nodded slightly before turning to Kira and I, "We're going to need help," he admitted, his eyes anxious but willing, "A lot of help."
---
A chill ran through my body as we all stood in some sort of warehouse. Hanging plastic sheets surrounded the whole room, making the whole situation feel even scarier.
Scott had decided that this would be the best place to try to keep everyone safe. Deaton's was too exposed, too well known. And although this place may have been safer, it sure didn't feel like it.
A loud bang erupted throughout the building, causing me to jump as my eyes darted around.
"You alright?" a voice from behind me asked. I turned around to see Brett hovering over me, a concerned look covering his face.
I nodded, pushing the hair from my face, "I'm fine, " I whispered too afraid to speak too loudly.
An awkward silence filled the air before he spoke again, "I never got to apologize for how big of an ass I was that first night I met you," he began, regret taking over the concerned look on his face, "If it wasn't for you and your brother and friends, I would be dead."
I gave him a warm smile as I shook my head, "I was just as big of an ass." I laughed, recalling the fact that I had just about punched him in the face for the way he had spoken to Liam.
Brett let out a small laugh, but it quickly faded as footsteps echoed throughout the building. I froze, wide-eyed as Brett pushed past me, instantly rushing forward with a growl escaping his lips.
"WAIT!" Scott yelled running after him, when Brett didn't back down he continued, "Brett!" he snapped, "This is his place." I stepped around the corner, peeking out to see that it was Chris Argent with his gun pointed at Brett.
Chris' eyes fell to my brother as he let out a sigh, "Scott." he began as Brett backed down, "If you bring in guests, you could have called."
Scott's nodded, his voice dropping, "We didn't know where else to go" he admitted.
I stepped back from the group, watching as Satomi and Chris shared a few words, she claiming she knew him- most likely from his hunting days. The topic of conversation then fell to the group who had been after Brett and his little sister last night- they had used crossbows. Chris explained that they were no longer hunters if they were killing for profit, this was getting serious.
I took that time to text Liam, telling him what was going on and that so far, we were all okay. I felt the nerves rise in my stomach as Chris and Scott continued exchanging words...something bad was coming.
---
About another hour had past, and I stood with Brett and Lori while Scott and Chris stood off to the side whispering-very loudly.
I could see both of both of them glancing at me, "You brought Sydney?" I heard Chris snap, his eyes shifting between Scott and I.
My brother nodded, his gaze also landing on me briefly, "We need extra help, she can fight" Scott justified.
Chris now had his full attention on Scott, "She's fifteen years old!" he sniped, frustration taking over his features.
I could tell Scott already felt guilty about bringing me along, and this was not making him feel any better, "Allison taught her all she knows and she-"
Chris' face saddened at the mention of his late daughter, "Look where fighting got Allison."
"You guys know we can all hear you right?" I questioned, which resulted in both Scott and Chris turning to glare at me.
I gave them a reassuring smile, and it felt like it was the tenth time I had done so since the night before, "I can handle myself." I promised, attempting to ease their worries. Scott was right, before Allison had died, when I had just figured out about what my brother was, she had taught me how to protect myself, how to fight.
Chris nodded, his eyes quickly darting back to Scott, "I know you can, Syd."
---
Braeden and Derek had shown up not long after, Braeden carrying what seemed like a full arsenal of guns.
"Take your pick," she announced, watching me as I gawked at all of the weapons laid out in front of me.
"Here," Derek mumbled, swooping in and picking up one of the guns, "This one's the easiest to use." he promised, giving me a reassuring smile.
I nodded, taking it into my hands as I muttered a small 'thanks.' He kept his eyes locked on me for a moment and I could tell he had the same concerns as Argent...what was I doing here?
I checked the clip in the gun before sending him a small smile, "Don't worry," I assured, "I'll be okay."
He let out a shaky sigh, his attention soon turning to Scott who was making his way toward us, "They'll be okay." Scott announced, his eyes landing on Satomi's pack., but it sounded like more of a question.
Derek turned away from the pack, making his way back to Braeden, "They've got claws and fangs but they're not fighters."
Scott nodded, following after Derek , "That's why I called you."
"Well," Derek began, "Try to remember I don't have claws and fangs anymore either." he reminded, stopping beside Braeden.
"That's why he called me" Braeden added.
"Am I the only one still hoping this whole thing is a false alarm" Kira asked looking around, "I mean we could be waiting here all night and nothing could happen...right?"
Everyone exchanged quick glances. All of us knew it was very unlikely that nothing would happen. Some kind of fight would take place here...I just didn't know how it would end.
"Scott," Braeden spoke, avoiding Kira's question, "Have you heard anything from Stiles and Lydia?"
My brother nodded, "Lydia is still talking to Meredith and Stiles and Malia are headed to the lake house." he explained, "They're trying to stop this."
"What if there is no end?" Brett questioned, from behind our group, "What if they don't stop until we're all dead?"
"Thanks for the negativity Brett" I mumbled, earning a warning look from Scott.
"Then let's send a message" Derek announced, everyone's heads turning to look at him. "Let's make tonight perfectly clear to anyone with a copy of that list." his eyes surveyed the group as he spoke, "It doesn't matter if they're professional assassins, hunters or just an amateur that just picked up the gun, if they think they can kill any of us for money they get to be on another list... they get to be a name on our dead pool."
"Let's do this" Braeden said cocking her gun.
