03.
The next morning as I made my way down to the kitchen, a yawn escaped my lips. That, paired with the dark bags under my eyes openly displayed the fact that I was exhausted, due to lack of sleep from the night before, from obvious reasons.
"Morning" I grumbled as I walked passed Scott, making my way toward the cupboard.
"Hey." He replied a yawn escaping his own mouth, clearly he hadn't gotten much sleep either.
I grabbed a cereal bar and looked over at him, trying to figure out how I wanted to approach the situation. Finally, I worked up the courage to say something, "Can I ask you something" I asked hesitantly.
Scott looked up at me, his tired eyes meeting mine, "Syd, if this is about Liam, I really don't-"
I cut him off, not respecting his decision not to talk about it "-Why did you bite him?" I questioned, asking the question that had been bothering me all night.
My older brother sighed, running his hands over his face, "Syd, you don't understand."
I shook my head, pulling up a chair so I could sit beside him, "No, Scott, I guess I don't" I snapped, "He's only 15, he's innocent and-"
It was Scott's turn to cut me off, "-I did it to save his life, Sydney!" he snapped, causing me to shrink back slightly. .
I glared at him, shaking my head, "Save his life? Scott, he was in a hospital with a broken ankle, not a punctured lung. What possibly could have gone so wrong that you needed to bite him to save his life?"
Scott stood up, his chair scraping across the floor in the process, "Something happened." He explained, moving the place his dishes in the sink. When I looked at him, awaiting further explanation, he continued, "You know that triple homicide Stiles was talking about at lunch yesterday?"
I slowly nodded, remembering the rant Stiles had gone on about us needing to figure out what was going on, as clearly it was supernatural. I had ignored most of what he was saying, too focused on the sandwich I had packed for lunch that day.
Scott leaned against the island so he was facing me, "The kid, who's parents were murdered, his name's Sean. But he wasn't just a kid...he wasn't human."
I stared back at my brother, trying to figure out where this was going, "He's like you?" I questioned.
Scott shook his head, a conflicting look on his face, "No. No, he was different." he answered, looking down to his feet for a moment, seemingly recalling the events from last night, "He was what they call a Wendigo."
Confusion covered my face, "What is that?" The supernatural world was still new to me, meaning I lacked knowledge on many aspects of it.
My brother nodded, understanding my confusion, "It's like a cannibal"
I felt myself shiver at the thought of it. "That's...creepy," I concluded, "But what does that have to do with Liam?"
"The Wendigo craves human flesh," Scott explained, running through the events of last night, "He killed the deputy, and went after mom-"
I felt my heart drop, "-He went after mom?"
"She's okay," Scott promised, trying to ease my worry as he continued recalling the events, "He took Liam up to the roof-"
"-To kill him," I concluded, my mind running to what would have happened if Sean managed to kill Liam. How would we have explained that one, not to mention the guilt Scott would have felt.
Scott nodded sombrely, "Liam almost fell over the ledge. The only way I could save him was by biting him, I had no choice"
I sighed, already feeling guilty for how I had accused Scott. I knew in my heart that he would have only done it if he had no choice. But it was still hard knowing one of my fellow classmates was now my brother's beta.
I looked to the clock that hung in the kitchen, realizing we only had a few minutes before we had to leave for school. "So what happened to Sean then?"
Scott cringed, and it seemed he had hoped I wouldn't ask that, "Something killed him."
"Something?" I echoed
"It was a man but..." Scott trailed off, his jaw clenched, "He had no mouth."
I felt my jaw slack at this revelation, "No mouth?
Scott nodded, as his worried eyes stared back at me, "Something's going on Syd. I don't know what it is, but I have a bad feeling about it."
----
I had thought about mine and Scott's conversation the whole way to school, and the questions and worries still ran through my mind as I grabbed stuff from my locker before first period. I was in mid thought when something down the hall caught my eyes.
It was Scott and Stiles, in between them, seemingly cornered, was Liam. He looked confused...and angry. I guessed that Scott was trying to further explain to him what had happened last night. Apparently his and Stiles' attempts last night failed.
I closed my locker, my eyes still locked on them as I started to walk down the hall toward the boys. I was steps away when someone stepped in front of me, "Hey Syd." Sophia chirped, giving me a bright smile.
I kept my eyes locked on Liam, afraid something was going to go wrong, "Uh- Hey Soph" I muttered, too distracted by the scene down the hall.
"Wanna walk to class?" she asked oblivious to my distraction.
I finally pulled my eyes away from the boys, looking to my best friend, "Yeah," I sighed, beginning to turn toward my class.
"What's going on?" she asked, looking for the source of my distraction.
"Nothing," I promised, taking a hold of her arm, "Let's go. Class starts soon" I said pulling her away.
-----
"I'm not sharing my basement." Malia declared as we all stood by the buses at lunch, trying to figure out what to do with Liam.
Malia had been struggling to control her shifts, primarily during a full moon. Lydia had offered up her family's lake house, but clearly Malia was still having a hard time.
"Actually, " Lydia piped in, "It's my basement..and my mom noticed how you tore it up last time."
Malia scowled at her as Stiles put a supportive hand on her shoulder, "Alright, she's still learning." he defended.
Scott jumped in, diffusing the situation, "We were going to use the boathouse for Liam. It has support beams, we can chain him to one of them."
I nodded, "That's a good idea, but what makes you think he's going to come to the Lake house? It doesn't exactly scream normal when a bunch of juniors want a freshman to come to a lake house with them." I added. "And besides, I'm pretty sure he hates you and Stiles."
Stiles feigned a look of hurt, "He doesn't hate us." he muttered, causing me to shoot him a teasing grin.
"Sydney's right" Kira agreed, "But how do we get him out to the lake house if he doesn't trust us?"
"Well I say if it keeps him from murdering people, we just chloroform the little bastard and throw him in the lake." Stiles suggested, adding actions to his words.
"I'm in." Malia announced, raising her hand.
I shot them both a disapproving look as I shook my head, "We're not doing that."
My brother chimed in on my rejection of the plan, "We're not killing or kidnapping him."
Lydia, who had previously been deep in thought, spoke up, "Well then let's be smarter." She suggested, "We tell him there's a party and invite him."
"You're gonna ask out a freshman?" Stiles asked, doubt coming off of his voice.
"No I'm done with teenage boys," Lydia answered, as if she was stating the obvious, "But, I was thinking Syd could."
All eyes turned to me and I stared back at them in surprise, "I-"
"Sydney can't do it." Scott cut in, causing my shoulders to slump slightly, "Liam knows she's my sister, and he saw her last night. There's no way he'll agree if she asks him."
"We can all thank Scott for that one." I muttered.
Lydia ignored my comment as she spoke again, "Well then, if we're playing a trick on someone, let's use the trickster." She proposed.
It was Kira's turn to have all eyes on her. Upon noticing our stares she gawked, lost for words for a moment, "Who me?" she squeaked, "No way, not me." she denied.
"Yes, you!" Lydia confirmed, "You know what they call a female fox?" she paused for a moment, awaiting an answer. When she didn't get one, she grinned, answering her own questioned "A Vixen."
"Me?" Kira asked again, her voice weak.
"You can do it Kira, be a Vixen" Lydia said smirking.
I looked over at Stiles who was vehemently nodding in agreement. I guess the plan was set.
-----
"Okay so here's the plan," Scott began as I sat in his room, watching him get ready for the 'party', "I want you to go with Kira."
"Why can't I go with you guys?" I questioned, watching as he searched for his keys.
Scott sighed, stopping his search to look at me, "Sydney, you shouldn't even be coming in the first place. But," he added, finally spotting his keys, "It will probably make Liam more comfortable if another freshman is there. So, go with Kira." he ordered, before adding a quick, "Please."
I bit down on my cheek, "But you said earlier that he wouldn't agree to come with me...he knows who I am." I pointed out.
Scott sighed as he pocketed his keys, looking back at me, "What's he going to do? Jump out of the car when he sees you? The point was to get him to agree to the party. Kira got that part done, so now it's your turn."
I let out a low sigh as I stood from his bed, "Fine." I muttered, beginning to make my way back to my room, "But if he decides to rip me apart because I'm your sister, that's on you."
Scott's face fell slightly and I could tell I hit a nerve. "I'm joking." I quickly promised, giving Scott a small smile, "I'll be fine."
My brother gave me a small nod, but I could tell he was still caught up on my comment, "Kira will be here in twenty minutes. Be ready." He ordered before making his way toward the stairs. He paused at the top, turning to look at me, "Hey, Syd?" He called, grabbing my attention, "Be safe."
I nodded, giving him a grin, "I always am."
Once Scott was gone, I finished getting ready before making my way down to the living room. Upon my entrance, I was greeted by my mother who sat reading a book, "Hey, Syd" she greeted, her eyes not leaving the book.
"Hey, mom" I mumbled, turning on my phone to check the time, the nerves starting to rise in my stomach.
My mom looked up after finishing her page, a furrow covering her face at my appearance, "Where are you going?" she questioned.
I looked down at my outfit and then back to her, "Out?" I offered, giving a small shrug.
She raised a brow, "Care to tell me where?" she prodded. Safe to say I didn't get out much, unless it involved the supernatural. And it just so happened that tonight did- great.
"Scott and Stiles are going to be there." I promised, trying to ease her worries.
"Oh? And that's supposed to make me feel better?" my mom replied, a small laugh escaping her lips.
I was in the process of trying to reassure her when a car horn sounded from outside, "That's my ride mom," I announced, turning toward her, "Gotta go. Love you!" I said quickly kissing her cheek, before running out the front door.
As I slipped into the back seat of Kira's car, she turned to me with a worried look, "I have a bad feeling about this" She confessed.
"Me and you both" I muttered as she started the car.
---
After picking Liam up, we made the trip out to the lake house. Upon seeing me in the car, Liam had almost jump out of the car like Scott had suggested he would, but luckily Kira managed to convince him to stay.
As we turned on to the dirt road that lead to the house on the lake, Liam turned to look at me, "Remind me why she's here." he muttered, shooting me a glare.
I scoffed, rolling my eyes, "She has a name." I shot back, "And how else did you expect me to get there? Walk?"
Liam kept his eyes locked with mine, "Can't someone else drive you?" he grumbled.
A smirk came to my face, "Do I make you uncomfortable?" I teased, which resulted in Liam turning back to the front, an angry look on his face. Once he was turned around, a pain expression covered his face. I caught it in the mirror, and watched as he reached to turn the radio down.
Kira sensed the tension and spoke up. "It's Lydia Martin's lake house. Well," she corrected, "It's her grandmother's, but she's dead, so it's okay. I mean it's not okay that she's dead." Kira rambled.
I looked down at my hands and laughed as Kira awkwardly made conversation. At least she was trying.
"Can you turn the music down?" Liam suddenly blurted, cutting Kira off. I furrowed my eyebrows due to the fact that it was barely loud enough for me to hear. Then I clued in to what was going on. It was happening.
Kira and I shared a nervous glance in the rearview mirror as I grabbed my phone, texting my brother to let him know that we were close, and that they needed to be ready.
"You want me to turn the music up?" Kira asked reaching to turn the dial.
My eyes traveled back to Liam as he suddenly jumped, then he reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone. He looked down at it for a moment before looking back up at Kira, "Who'd you say was coming to this party?"
Kira looked back and me and I shrugged not knowing what to say. I wasn't sure what she had told him when she invited him.
"Um," Kira began, looking to me once more, "Everyone?" Kira replied nervously.
Her answer sounded more like a question, and I could tell that Liam wasn't fully convinced, "Lydia throws the best parties in Beacon Hills." I answered, trying to calm the situation.
Liam looked back at me, skepticism still present on his face, but nonetheless he nodded ever so slightly.
As we got closer to the lake house, the moon came further into view. I watched as Liam's breathing became heavy...he was trying to fight it.
Kira and I shared yet another nervous glance as the sound of Liam's breathing filled the car. Luckily, at that moment we pulled up to the lake house, all three of us immediately getting out of the car.
"I'll see you inside" I muttered, quickly rushing inside, not wanting to be near Liam any longer.
"Sydney." Scott breathed, giving me a small nod as I entered.
"It's not going to be much longer." I announced, joining the four of them where they stood lined up by one of the walls.
Moments later Liam and Kira walked in. Upon their arrival, Scott and Stiles gave Liam an awkward wave. I could tell this was not going to end well.
Anger and confusion covered Liam's face as he looked around at the group of us, his eyes briefly meeting mine, "What the hell is this?" Liam demanded.
Stiles took a small step forward, his voice tentative, "Think of it as an intervention. You have a problem Liam."
"And we're the only ones who can help" Scott added.
Liam looked around at us like we were insane, and to him, it probably seemed like we were. I mean five juniors and a random freshman who he just met bring him out to a lake house, armed with chains and restraints. That can't look normal.
"Okay, let's start here" Scott suggested, "All of us," Scott announced, motioning around the room, "Aren't normal."
"What's that supposed to mean" Liam snapped, crossing his arms against his chest.
Scott sent a nervous look between the group of us, before he proceeded to list off every supernatural being that was present in the room.
Liam stared back at my brother, an unconvinced look covering his face, "Werewolf" he repeated, pointing at Scott, "Werecoyote," he said moving to Malia. He then looked to Lydia, "Banshee." He paused, turning to look at Kira, "And fox?"
"Kitsune," Kira corrected, "But fox works."
His eyes then fell to Stiles and I, the only two unspoken for so far, "What are you two?" He demanded.
"Well," Stiles began "For a while I was possessed by an evil spirit," he explained, "Very evil." He added, just incase Liam hadn't got it the first time.
Liam nodded slowly, still acting as if we were making all of this up. "What are you now?" he shot back.
"Better...?" Stiles answered slowly, making it like more of a question.
Liam's eyes then fell on me, I was the last one, "And what the hell are you then?" he snapped, his voice harsh.
I shook my head, my eyes locking with his, "Nothing." I answered.
He stared at me, his face morphing from confusion to anger, "Your brother's a werewolf, and you're...nothing?" he spat.
I bit down on my lip as Stiles took a small step closer to me, "She's human." He answered for me, already in protective mode. Scott wore a similar concerned look from where he stood. "It's a long story," he explained, "If you just let us help you, we can tell you everything."
Liam didn't respond to his proposal, instead he looked down to the restraints resting atop the table, "Are those for me?" Liam demanded.
"No," Malia answered, "They're for me." she explained, her eyes shifting to the glowing blue colour that I knew all too well.
Liam took a startled step back. "Wow'd you do that?" he asked in disbelief.
"You will learn" Scott said calmly. "But first you need to get through the full moon"
"The moons already out" Liam snapped.
"And you're starting to feel something aren't you" Scott asked.
"I feel like I'm surrounded by a bunch of psychotic nutjobs! You guys are out of your freaking minds! I don't know how you did that eye thing and I don't care." He yelled, his anger seeming to rise with every word, "I'm walking out of that door and if any of you try to stop me, I swear to God-" He abruptly cut himself off, instead letting out a pained scream as his hands flew to his ears.
Scott stepped toward Liam, worry in his eyes, "Liam, what's wrong?"
"Do you not hear that?" Liam yelled his hands still clamped over his ears.
Scott stopped moving and listened, pausing when headlights lit up the room.
A look of concern flooded Lydia's face as she looked down to Liam, "Did you tell someone about this?"
"My friend Mason," Liam grunted though gritted teeth, "You said it was a party."
"And who did Mason tell?" Stiles asked, glancing out the window.
Kira spun from the front door where she has been looking out the window, "Everyone."
I stepped back as claws formed formed where Liam's fingernails were. Things were happening and they were happening fast.
"The floors, get him off of the floors!" Lydia yelled stepping forward. Liam looked up at her, letting out a deep growl.
"Let's get him to the boathouse, now!" Scott yelled, as him as Kira rushed to pull Liam off the floor, rushing him out of the house.
Malia leaned on the coffee table. "Stiles!" she called, worry in her own voice.
Stiles spun around, "Yeah-"
Malia didn't say anything, she just looked up at him and growled, revealing her fangs that had appeared
"Okay," Stiles announced, "To the basement, now!"
Lydia's eyes were wide as she watched the pair move away, "Wait what am I supposed to do about the hoards of people outside?" she questioned.
"Lydia," Stiles grunted as Malia leaned into him, "Who throws the best parties in Beacon Hills?"
"What!?" Lydia shrieked, "Me!"
"Well then" Stiles said motioning to the door.
Lydia then turned to me, her eyes full of concern, "Well Syd, looks like it's up to me and you."
I gave her a nervous look as she approached the front door, letting out a small sigh before she swung it open to reveal at least 50 people. I instantly recognized three of the kids in the front, Mason, Garrett and Violet- Liam's friends.
Mason looked between Lydia and I, "Is this the right place?"
"For the party." Garret clarified.
Lydia clenched her jaw as she stepped aside, "Yep."
A cheer broke out as all of them flooded inside.
"I did not sign up for this" I mumbled to myself.
