Β Β Β Β Β Stepping outside they were greeted with the chilly September air. The stars scattered across the dark abyss of the night sky and the lamps from the horseless carriages illuminating the grounds. Single clouds shadowing the moonlight, as an unsettling feeling of nervousness arose in her stomach.
A bright light shone across the crowd, along with a booming voice. Raising her chin to get a better look, Genevieve's eyebrows shot up, completely taken aback to see a giant man with a long shaggy beard covering most of his face. Scanning the crowd to see if she was going crazy, letting out a sigh of relief seeing people having similar expressions of shock and slight terror.
"Firs'-years! Firs'-years right this way!" the man called out. Although he seemed terrifying, she couldn't help but notice the softness in his eyes. "Welcome to Hogwarts! I'm Hagrid, mind yer step!"
Staying close to James, Sirius and Remus, following the crowd through the dark pathway, eventually leading up to the edge of a lake. Letting out a laugh of disbelief at the sight.
Bright yellow lights reflected in the dark waters, the foggy air collecting around the edge of the lake. Surrounded by many turrets and towers and perched atop a steep mountain. Hogwarts castle was extraordinary.
"Four to a boat!" Hagrid shouted. All the first years scrambled to get to a boat. Genevieve still sticking with the others, listening to Hagrid's instructions of when to move or when to duck under a curtain of ivy.
Clambering out onto the rocks and pebbles, watching as Hagrid lifted his large hand and knocked on the font door. The woman who opened the door was a tall, black haired witch in emerald green robes who held a stern face. Leading them inside and up the marble staircase, filling the students with warmth from the brightly lit torches.
Everyone huddling towards the entrance, as she started talking. "Welcome to Hogwarts, I am Professor McGonagall." telling the first-years all about the sorting and their houses, everyone listening carefully. "The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule breaking will lose you points..."
Grinning, the Potter twins locked eyes.
In the middle of her speech, Genevieve heard a faint laughter, furrowing her eyebrows before looking up curiously, although nobody else seemed to notice. Stepping away to get a better look, she quickly looked back down when she heard screams and a loud splash of water.
"Peeves!!"
Glancing around amusedly seeing everyone drenched in their robes. Genevieve happened to be the only fortunate one who didn't get wet. Covering her mouth with her hand, letting a few giggles slip as James glared.
"No wonder dad told me to look after you," laughing at the annoyed look her brother gave her.
Professor Mcgonagall casted a drying spell, telling them to neaten up before stepping inside the hall.
"Your hair is a mess James." Genevieve scolded trying to flatten it down, whilst he swatted her hands away continuously. "Leave it Gen! That's what makes me cool!" fixing his crooked glasses.
Genevieve pulled a face at him and stuck out her tongue, him doing the same in response. "Nothing makes you look cool, I'm the cool twin!" "No you're not!" "Yes I am!" their bickering coming to a stop as Mcgonagall re-entered the hallway.
Forming a line, the girl in front of Genevieve turned her head to introduce herself while they waited. She was a tall, pretty blonde and wore her hair in a high ponytail. Her honey brown eyes held the warmth of an everlasting hearth
"Hi! I'm Marlene McKinnon." she said
Already smiling, Genevieve replied, "Genevieve Potter and the one behind me is my idiotic brother, James," looking behind her to see him and Sirius arguing over who's hair was nicer and now seemed to be in a deep staring contest. "Sirius is the one next to him." she explained.
The girl in front of Marlene had also turned around. She had soft black hair that cascaded down her back in long waves. Her eyes were delicate and sweet as swirling chocolate and a dash of caramel. Skin smooth with slightly puffed out tinted cheeks. She pursed her pink plump lips before flashing her a toothy grin.
She's so pretty!
"I'm Emmeline Vance," also unintentionally admiring the brunette beauty stood near her. "I'm terrified! do you have any idea how they're sorting us?" creasing her eyebrows in panic and worry.
Smiling apologetically, Genevieve admitted that she didn't either. Whispers filling the crowed corridor on the subject.
"Follow me into the Great Hall please!" McGonagall shouted, leading the long row of students through the large thick double doors, swiftly pushing them open. Simultaneously everyones mouth stood agape. Thousands of brightly lit candles floated above them, the ceiling bewitched to look like the night sky. In between the isles were four long tables where all the other students sat in their respected houses. Silver mists and shadows casted around as the ghosts lingered.
"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted."
"Bertram, Aubrey!" a boy with dark hair stumbled towards the stool, hands shaking, eyes nervously darting around. After a while the hat screamed out,
"Ravenclaw!" the hat boomed as he made his way towards the blue and bronze coloured table.
a couple more names were called out before it was the Blacks.
"Black, Cassiopeia!" Genevieve gave her a reassuring smile, which seemed to help a little. She liked the girl she'd met on the train earlier. This time the hat took much longer to announce, but eventually called out once more,
"Ravenclaw!" a pause, before people started clapping- Genevieve included, although she couldn't tell whether Cassie looked happy or not about it.
"Black, Sirius!"
The Great Hall went silent, the Heir of the Noble house of Black would surely be placed in Slytherin. But among hearing such a powerful title twice, caused the Hall quieten down.
She gave him a smile, as he took a deep breath and strutted his way over to the stool, placing the hat over his head. It took a few seconds before shouting,
"Gryffindor!"
Sirius seemed shocked for a moment, before his face broke out into a large grin happily making his way over to the table. Claps and cheers echoing around the hall.
A few more names were called out, a few she recognised; Marlene in Gryffindor, Remus in Gryffindor, Emmeline in Ravenclaw, the list of names seeming never ending to her.
"Evans, Lily!"
Genevieve's eye sockets almost fell out from how wide her eyes were. How had she not seen her earlier? She promised herself to go speak to her during or after the feast.
Genevieve realised how close they were getting to her and James' names. The very act of watching was hurting her eyes, and her heart was still threatening to burst forth from her ribcage. What if I trip? What if it doesn't sort me? Is that possible? Would I have to go home? Would James still like me if I was in Slytherin? She clutched onto her brothers hand tightly, giving her a squeeze of reassurance, her doing the same back.
"Potter, Genevieve!" taking a deep breath and plastering on a confident smile she made her way towards the stool, placing the hat atop her head.
Lily's head snapped up, a similar expression on her face that Genevieve had moments ago.
"Ah... A Potter eh?" flinching slightly when the hat started talking. Am I supposed to talk back? Keeping quiet as it continued.
"Interesting, different from your father yes." furrowing her eyebrows, as to what the hat meant. "Quite the overachiever and much wisdom, although there's patience and loyalty in you too. Hufflepuff would suit you well, Miss Potter,"
"You will do great things Miss Potter I can see it, but there is only one house which fits you perfectly alas you're a lion by heart. Gryffindor!"
The Gryffindor table burst into claps and cheers, Gen had a proud grin on her face, walking towards the table, sitting down next to the red head she was already rather fond of.
Smiling brightly, before engulfing each other in a hug. "I can't believe this!" Lily whisper shouted. "Neither can I, can we talk later? my brothers about to be called." looking towards the front, as Lily nodded, although her smile quickly became a frown when she noticed who her brother was.
"Potter, James!"
The hat had barely touched his head, when it announced, "Gryffindor!"
Genevieve's claps were by far the loudest, as he made his way over and sat down opposite her. Giving her and Sirius a high-five.
"Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before our banquet begins I would like to say a few things." the man with the ridiculously long beard bellowed.
Genevieve zoned out soon after, when James started up a game of rock, paper, scissors. A game they'd grown accustomed to, when a muggle friend of their fathers introduced it to them.
As both their faces scrunched up in concentration, solely focused on beating one another, they hadn't noticed the several faces on the table turning to look in their direction, Dumbledores speech long forgotten, eager to see who wins. The girls rooting for Genevieve, the boys rooting for James, whilst Lily scolded them slightly, although not without whispering words of encouragement to her brunette friend. Merlin knew she definitely didn't want to give Potter another reason to add to his already flaming ego.
"Rock, paper, scissors! Hah I win Genny!" James practically shouted, after an agonising fifteen rounds, sticking his tongue out childishly. She frowned, along with the other girls. Sirius who was surprisingly also cheering for Genevieve, let out a quiet sigh of defeat, but still grinned at James clapping for him along with a few others. It seemed that they had caught the interest of not just the Gryffindors but also the rest of the houses.
A smug expression took over James' face, although it didn't last long when Gen had kicked him off the bench.
She'd done it a little harder than she had intended to but that didn't stop the smug expression from creeping up on her face this time. Quickly taking her camera out from her robe pocket. She had asked her father to place an extension charm on all her pockets saying it was for books, which wasn't technically a lie. Snapping a quick polaroid.
The Great Hall erupted with laughter, as James scrambled to sit back down, pointing a finger at his sister accusingly. "You! You just- You kicked me!" spluttering out in between breaths.
"You deserved it!" she scoffed, "And it was just a small shove, don't be dramatic."
As he went to reply with a threat perhaps, Dumbledore's twinkling eyes flashed in the direction of the Potter twins, an amused smile on his face.
"Tuck in."
Various dishes filled the table, making her mouth water at the sight, everyone immediately piling food onto their plates.

Linking pinkies with Lily, her and Genevieve practically ran up the staircase to the girls dorm, leaving a quick kiss on her brothers cheek and saying goodnight.
The two squealing, giggling girls embraced each other in a tight hug, the other presence in the room going unnoticed by them.
"I can't believe you're here!" gasping, a bright smile plastered on Genevieve's face.
"Neither can I, this is insane!" replying equally as shocked and happy.
Hearing somebody behind her clear their throat, the two spun around. It was two girls, Genevieve recognised the one from earlier Marlene Mckinnon.
The other girl had short brown hair reaching up to her shoulders with doe brown eyes. She held a kind smile, with her hands placed behind her back.
"I'm Alice Fortescue." moving to stand closer.
Introducing themselves the four energetic girls got changed into their pyjamas soon after. Sitting together on one bed and sharing leftover sweets, they chatted until their eyelids felt droopy. Too tired to move, they fell asleep on different parts of the bed in different positions. Minnie trodding over and making herself comfortable in the middle, curling up into Genevieve's legs.
She was going to love Hogwarts
