Genevieve Daisy Potter was lost.
She was in London with her mother. A last minute decision to bring her along, after her father and brother insisted that they had a 'father, son day'. Practically shoved out of her own home before she could get a word in. Not that she minded, she loved London. Always hoping to get a small glimpse of the red and black trains, in which she'd soon board on Platform 9 3/4 to Hogwarts.
But that wasn't happening today. In fact she was lost in the busy streets of London, people flooding from every direction, from every shop. Plead after plead she tried continuously to gain somebody's attention. Nobody listened of course.
Nobody paid attention, except for a little red-haired, green eyed girl in exactly the same predicament.
Sighing in defeat, Genevieve quickly rushed out of the crowd, careful to avoid being swept up. Somehow, managing to stumble into a park. She was terrified. Her mother was nowhere to be seen, no way to contact her and she was in London.
Eyes now filled with panic, small tears blossomed in the corners them. Whilst her teary gaze was locked onto the ground she bumped into someone. "Oh! I'm sorry I wasn't looking where I was going." hastily saying. She had an unusual habit of bumping into people. "No worries, neither was I."
Looking up, she noticed that it was a girl around the same age as her. One definite similarity between the two, was that they both had emerald green eyes.
She's very pretty. Genevieve thought.
"I heard you earlier, are you lost too? it's my first time in London." Genevieve rapidly nodded her head in response. "Yes, I can't find my mum anywhere. I'm Genevieve by the way, what's your name?"
"I'm Lily, Lily Evans. That's a really pretty headband!" she replied. "Oh this?" reaching up to grab the headband. Genevieve always had an admiration for muggle things, especially accessories. "One of my mum's friends gave it to me for my birthday. I'm pretty sure she said it was fifty ponds? I think that's how you say it anyway." rambling on excitedly.
Lily's eyes visibly widened. "Fifty pounds?!" she exclaimed, interrupting her talking, completely ignoring the fact that she'd said it wrong.
"What's wrong? Oh, is that cheap? I knew it! I could tell it was flimsy."
"Are you serious? That's really expensive for a headband, definitely not cheap." still dumbfounded by the price of the pretty accessory. Genevieve saw how Lily eyed the item in her hands. "Oh... here you have it. I can always get more."
"Are you sure?" Genevieve smiled kindly and nodded her head, placing it on the red head. "What's that?" she pointed out, looking at the small blue thing in her new friends hand.
"It's a polaroid camera! You take pictures with it and it prints it out for you, look!" Genevieve studied it curiously, as Lily quickly took a picture of the sun setting, watching in amazement as it printed out a few seconds later. Both forgetting the issue for a moment, relishing in each other's company.
"Wow. That's so strange, it doesn't mov- I mean it's so cool?" quickly correcting herself, Genevieve didn't have much experience with muggles, but she wasn't stupid. Green irises staring in awe at the camera. This time it was Lily who saw how her new friend was eyeing the camera.
"Here. You gave me your headband, so it's only fair I give you something of mine in return." She said, handing over the camera. Genevieve's head snapped up, shock evident in her young features. An eventual smile gracing her face, dimples plastered on both cheeks.
"I love it, thank you! I'll keep it forever."
"Pinky swear?" Lily grinned back. Perplexed, Genevieve asked, "What's that?" the phrase unfamiliar to her.
Unexpectedly, the red head conjoined their pinkies in a tight hold. "Like this, you can never break pinky promises. It's a rule." As Genevieve went to reply she suddenly spotted Euphemia Potter, her mother.
She was hurrying towards her, relief flooding both their bodies. "Mum!" Genevieve and Lily both shouted in sync. Both suddenly spotting their mothers.
"Genevieve! There you are, I thought I'd lost you." leaning down to capture her daughter in a suffocatingly tight hug.
"Lily! Oh you scared us all, I'm so glad you're okay." Lily's mother hugging her daughter just as tightly.
"It's okay, I'm alright. My new friend helped me, she's so sweet mum. You have to meet her!" Genevieve commented, not holding back her excitement. "Maybe another time my dear, we must be going. It's getting dark."
Genevieve's face dropped, as she realised she might not ever see Lily again. She'd never had a lot of friends. Just a few. Not including James or Minnie (her cat) of course.
Before she could even say goodbye. Her mother whisked her away. Losing themselves in the crowd once more. She swiftly turned her head, to wave goodbye or shout a 'it was nice to meet you!'. Although much to her disappointment she was gone.
A new friendship between the two developed that day. One thing neither of them knew though, was that this definitely wasn't the last they'd be seeing of each other.
Maybe it was only a couple of minutes, but a lot can happen in a couple of minutes.
