September 2nd 1971
πππ€π’π§π her way through the hallways, watching in awe as the staircases changed directions and how the gold rimmed portraits greeted them in the early morning. Walking with Alice, Marlene and Lily, the four of them sat together on the Gryffindor benches in the Great Hall. Genevieve noticed that James wasn't around, which she had understood as the sun had barely bloomed. Waking up this morning to an array of colours beaming across the sky, like a painting with the sun being the main focus rising above the horizon.
That and Lily's dreaded alarm clock she had called it, which Marlene had thought was going to explode and therefore waking up the others fully to a perfect scene of her smacking the clock continuously with a pillow, hoping to fade out the constant ringing. Safe to say they were going to be very good friends.
Yawning, she sat down next to Lily, slamming her head down on the table, as Alice kindly piled multiple foods onto her plate. "I don't get how you're so energetic so early." complaining groggily, her voice coming out slightly muffled. Pushing her brown locks out of her face and reaching for a breakfast muffin. "Look Lily, there's no one around!"
"On the bright side at least we get fresh breakfast before anybody else." Marlene stated shrugging her shoulders and stuffing her face with syrup coated pancakes. Alice nodding in agreement, the two bringing over more food from across the empty table.
"It's good to be early guys! especially since this is our first day." moving the plates back into their original places, giving the two girls a scolding look.
"I'm pretty sure the day hasn't even started yet Lils. I'm surprised that breakfast has even arrived!" glancing around at the many empty spots at all house tables. Shaking her head as they continued chatting and eating. Sirius, James and Remus joining them around half an hour later, along with a fourth boy who's name she learned was Peter.
As Genevieve waved her brother over, Marlene and Lily simultaneously let out groans of annoyance. "Do you really have to invite boys over here?" Alice shushing her, not wanting them to hear and come off as rude, but the blonde haired witch didn't really care. Lily on the other hand agreed. "I like you, your brother not so much." narrowing her eyes at James, when he started walking towards them.
Genevieve's face pulled into a frown, a small sigh escaping her pink lips. "What did he do?" glancing to her left where the red head sat, not knowing how her brother already had someone disliking him.
She simply shook her head and whispered later, not wanting to cause a scene on the first day. Instead taking out her Charms book to go over, hiding behind her hair
"Hey Gen!" grinning as he slid into the seat next to her, James reached over to grab all sorts of foods, Sirius, Remus and a fourth boy followed. "Replacing me already?" he asked gesturing to the three girls.
Raising her eyebrows, she waved to the three other boys. "Bit hypocritical don't you think? This is Marlene, Alice and Lily." introducing each of her new friends, Lily completely ignoring his presence and avoiding his eyes although it didn't seem to do much as soon as James opened his mouth again.
"Evans! I remember you, where's your snake?" smirking and tauntingly winking at Lily to get a rise out of her.
Snake? Genevieve mouthed to Marlene, the girl shrugging as an answer merely as clueless.
"His name is Severus and I'd appreciate it if you didn't call him a snake!" snapping her book shut so quickly, many people turned in their direction.
"Well, by the way you're still defending him-"
"Why don't you guys just introduce yourselves before you make us leave." Marlene snapped, having enough of their stupid argument. She was already beginning to dislike the boys, and she had no problem making it known by having Alice move along the bench so there'd be more room between her and Sirius.
Ew boys.
Still grinning, James introduced himself and the three other boys whom he now shared a dorm with.
"I've heard of your dad! He made that Sleekeazy Hair Potion didn't he?" Peter exclaimed. Genevieve and James nodded proudly. "Yeah, he's an Auror now though, I'm gonna be just like him."
"Maybe after you use that potion." pointing to his messy hair and leaning forward to fix it before he swatted her hands away. Gen knew that James hated using things on his hair as he claimed they made it too 'sticky and weird'. That and he didn't want to look like a greasy haired git unlike others.
In the middle of a conversation about pranks- James and Sirius bringing it up, with Genevieve being slightly reluctant at first and Lily giving them horrified looks. Pranks! On the first day?! She prayed the Potter girl didn't help them with this. Professor McGonagall came around handing out everyone's schedules.
Heading towards their first class of the year together, Potions with the Slytherins. They all shared the same or either very similar classes. Walking to the Dungeons as a group, she tuned out James' continuous complaints about how much he disliked the pairing of snakes and Gryffindors in the same classroom. Instead paying attention to Lily talking about a friend of hers in Slytherin.
Entering the room, they all took their collective seats, Lily dragging her over towards her Slytherin friend. Chatting among themselves she introduced them.
"Sev! I want you to meet Genevieve, you remember I told you about her right?" pointing to her left, as Severus was sitting on her right.
Sending a soft smile and a wave, Genevieve sent a quick hello, getting a small nod in return. She noticed his hair was long and most of it covered his face and he seemed to be messily writing something down on parchment.
"Welcome to your first potions lesson! I am Professor Slughorn." the class immediately quieting down as a short man walked into the dungeons.
"Assuming most of you know a few things about potion making, today we'll be making a simple Pompion Potion." looking around and pointing at each student counting how many there were. "Groups of three please, seeing as there's an odd amount of you today. Ingredients on my desk and instructions should be in your books!"
James and Genevieve glanced at each other, as if it were a reflex. Wanting to stick together like always, but somehow managing to get dragged away by other people. Genevieve being paired with Lily and Severus and James being paired with Sirius and Remus, unfortunately leaving Peter to be paired with Marlene and Alice.
Walking to the front to gather the ingredients, James leaned closer to Genevieve quickly grabbing her hand before she could walk away again. "Sit together next lesson?" he whispered, using his puppy eyes as if she would say no or be mad.
She wasn't. She didn't think she could ever stay mad at James for long, no matter how annoying he could get sometimes.
Giving him a small smile, she nodded watching him walk back to his desk with a slight skip. Shaking her head softly, before making her way back to her table.
The three of them worked surprisingly well together. Snape seemed to be hostile towards her after learning her last name, seeing as though he didn't exactly have the best encounters with her twin brother. Although after apologising on James' behalf- she knew he would never say sorry, him and his stupid ego, she thought. And after him realising she was really good at Potions and after noticing the Potter girl and the Evans girl got along so well. He trusted Lily and she showed that she very much liked and trusted Genevieve, despite them both disliking her brother. Maybe he could get used to her presence
"Well this potion is perfect! and may I ask your names?" looking at the two Gryffindor girls. After pouring the potion into a vial, Slughorn came around checking them and after seeing multiple failures already, he was surprised to see that the one he was most impressed of, consisted of two Gryffindors and a Slytherin.
"Lily Evans and Genevieve Potter sir." Lily answered, beaming up at the Professor after the compliment.
"Potter? I used to teach your parents," looking at Genevieve. "yes I remember them, wonderful students Euphemia and Fleamont." she smiled at that. "20 points to Gryffindor and to Slytherin! Let these three wonderful students be an example to the rest of you." pointedly looking at James, Sirius and Remus who's potion had gone a sickly yellow instead of a bright orange due to the former two messing around and the latter trying to fix it.
"Oh and despite what it says in the book I would not recommend anybody drinki- Merlin's beard!"
A Slytherin had drunken the potion at that exact moment.
Although due to the potion being brewed incorrectly, rather than it turning the drinker's head into a pumpkin like it was supposed to it turned into something else entirely. It was yellow with red spots and Genevieve thought it looked similar to a melon. If it was slightly moldy. and if was shaped like a triangle.
"Somebody please escort Mr Stryker to the Hospital Wing." shaking his head disapprovingly whilst walking to the front. Genevieve struggled to hold her laughter in, but most people had no problem with letting their amusement show. Laughing uncontrollably as he walked out the room with someone to stop him from bumping into walls.

Entering Professor Flitwick's class, James and Genevieve sat next to each other as promised. Sirius took the seat next to Gen, hoping he could talk more to the girl. He found her interesting.
"Levitation," Professor Flitwick began. "Is one of the simplest spells. The wrist movement is swish and flick." instructing the class, he demonstrated with a feather, leaving one with each student.
"Wingardium Leviosa."
Repeating the movement and incantation, Genevieve was the only one who managed to get it on the first try. Leaving out the part where she had begged her father to teach her. Practicing illegally at home, but nobody had to know that.
Smiling brightly, she moved the feather in James' direction making it tickle his nose, who had been admiring the floating feather beforehand.
"Miss Potter!" Professor Flitwick exclaimedΒ walking towards her. His sudden appearance had made her lose her concentration and drop her feather. "Excellent work," looking down at her proudly, as a pink tint appeared on her cheeks when the whole class looked in her direction. "On the first try too, very well done. Ten points to Gryffindor! Please help those around you."
"A little help Genny?" Sirius asked from beside her, after she had helped a few others.
"Sure," grinning at him. He and James were on their second feather, after the first one had blown up in their faces. Moving his arm to hold the wand correctly, she showed him the movement properly, oblivious to Sirius' eyes on her, as he payed more attention to how smoothly words fell from her lips or how her smile was always warm and inviting or how-
"Here, have a go." he blinked when Genevieve had moved back. A barely noticeable blush arising. Praying he didn't mess up, because his idiotic self was admiring her instead of listening.
"Wingardium Leviosa." the feather had exploded again, the black ashes going on Sirius and Genevieve and covering James' glasses, who had been watching the exchange and then fell off his chair laughing.

Genevieve found that she wasn't the biggest fan of Herbology or Professor Sprout after she had told herself and Marlene to stop chatting and pay attention. Were they secretly taking pictures with Genevieve's camera while she was talking? definitely, but that was so not the point.
Unlike many others, she enjoyed History of Magic. She was surprised to see the Professor they'd have for the next five years would be a ghost. He always spoke in monotone, which would make most people drown out his voice. Genevieve tried to listen, but she'd found it easier to read the information from books instead, at least that won't be boring.
"Well that was exhausting," James huffed, laying on the sofa. People coming through the portrait after finishing dinner to head upstairs. The girls having already gone up to their dorm, leaving Genevieve to say goodnight to her brother.
Entering her room, she got changed into her pyjamas and hopped into bed, picking up Minnie making sure she'd had her dinner. Genevieve had slipped away during breaks a few times to feed her cat and to keep her company, her friends accompanying her sometimes. Taking out a piece of parchment and her quill, she began writing to her parents as she had forgotten yesterday.
Dear mum & dad,
Sorry for not writing yesterday, I fell asleep early. Things are going great in Hogwarts I've made loads of friends already and the classes are amazing. Everything's amazing here. I'm sure James has already written to you, if not I'll make sure he does. You remember Lily right? She's here at Hogwarts! You'll have to meet her soon, you'll love her. I don't think she really likes James but they're probably going to have to get used to each other soon enough. There's two other girls as well, Marlene and Alice. We all share a dorm and we're all good friends already. What's the house like now James and I are gone?
I miss you. There's a picture of Marlene and I during Herbology and before you ask, yes we got permission, lie there's also an adorable one of Minnie from earlier.
Love you, Genevieve, you're favourite twin.
Sticking down the polaroids, she sealed the letter, she had given it to Minnie to give to James because he had the owl. She still didn't know It's name, she'd have to ask him tomorrow. Tying the envelope softly around Minnie's paw, she watched as she trodded away going towards the boys dorms.
The girls had talked for a bit, until they all agreed that they were exhausted. Turning off the lights, Genevieve felt Minnie's paws on the end of her bed moving around until she found a comfy spot before they both drifting off into a dreamless sleep.
