backstory; while rosemary was still in her mother's womb, her father valentine gave her and her twin brother doses of the demon, lilith's , blood. she, like jonathan, was born with pitch black eyes and was eerily quiet. this caused their mother to see them as monsters, but she kept the façade of a loving mother as no one else saw anything wrong with them.

after the uprising, their father felt so betrayed by his parabatai, luke garroway, and jocelyn that he took rosemary and jonathan and ran away. to accomplish this, he fakes their deaths by burning down the fairchild manor with michael wayland, his son, jocelyn's grandparents, and the body of an unknown girl, inside. ever since he raised them in a cottage in idris.

they would both ask about their mother, and to stop the questions valentine said the their mother left because they where monsters, and she was never coming back. valentine then continued to abuse them psychologically, and manipulated them into believing that no one except him would ever love monster like them.

they then continued to be trained into a soldier fit for valentine's plans for the clave and the nephilim. they where taught the necessary traits they would require someday to fulfill, which they needed to learn without experience of contact with other people besides their own father. they where also taught the skills that they would need to help valentine bring down their adversaries. during this time, valentine hit them, lashing them on the back with a demon metal-tipped whip to remind them of the "perils of obedience."

when they where 15, their father performed the parabatai ceremony on them, and therefore bonded them for life.

in two thousand and seven, in light of valentine finally revealing to the world of shadowhunters that he was alive, their plans were set in motion, as was rosemary's role in it. rosemary's and jonathan went to pairand intercepted sebastian verlac, who was on his way to alicante to represent his Institute. after briefly befriending the boy, jonathan killed him, dyed his hair, and took over his identity. rosemary took over a fake identity of roslin nightshade, a girl who accompanied sebastian.

aided by the fact that the penhallows had been out of touch with their verlac cousin for so long, "sebastian" was easily able to trick the family into taking him in during his stay in alicante. also, the fact that there are thousands of nightshades, it was easy to trick them into believing " roslin " was one of them. shortly after, the lightwoods arrived to also stay with the penhallows. as roslin and sebastian, they where easily able to get close to both their sister, clary, and the lightwoods.

rosemary became extremely close to jace, much to her brothers dismay. the two began to develop romantic feelings for each other, which she hid from jonathan. until one night, he caught jace kissing rosemary.

when it came time to put their plan in action, rosemary began to have second thoughts. jonathan forced her into it. she fought alongside him reluctantly, though never truly killing anyone that did not attack her first. she followed jonathan to the penhallows home where jonathan was planning on killing isabelle lightwood. she then prevented jonathan from killing their little brother max, jumping in front of the knife.

it wounded her, but not enough to do anything fatal. she then told the lightwoods and everyone else the truth. after that, she was taken into custody by the clave and questioned. while in a cell, she felt jonathan die and the parabatai bond break. after weeks of trial, she was soon found innocent and released. she went back to the new york Institute with the lightwoods.
After this, she took the name roslin.

general personality of love interest; it's jace. he's cocky and a bit arrogant. he's a huge flirt, but only with roslin once they get together. he does tend to let his guard down around her, after awhile anyways. when away from strangers or those he doesn't know well, he is a lot sweeter, especially when alone with roslin.
