songyi was born in jeolla-do, but raised in seoul by her maternal grandmother, who owned a small restaurant on the outskirts of the city. although songyi always loved music, her grandmother never wanted her to pursue it as a real career because she thought it would be too hard to debut.

when performing once, at her grandmother's restaurant, she was scouted by cube entertainment. she was announced on the cube family tree in 2016 as DSY, and debuted in 2018 in the group "LUMIN".
