𝐉𝐎𝐇𝐍 𝐁 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐇 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐈𝐍 dr.nygard's office, talking about how they should wait a little loner before they leave so coby could rest. the sawyer girl was still laying on the table, a thin blanket resting over her body. she was still trying to get her senses in check, her hearing being a little fuzzy along with her sight. but that didn't matter to her in that moment. she slowly sat up from the table, wincing when she felt the stitches on her side pull. she then pulled the blanket off her as she slid off the table, grabbing her i.v. drip bag in the process. she stumbled over to where the office was, leaning in the doorway as she kept a tight grip on the drip bag.
"whoa, little lady! you need to go lie down." nygard told her.
"how long was i out?" coby questioned, her eyes landing on sarah, the blonde beauty walking over towards her.
"not long enough." sarah answered, gently wrapping her arm around coby's waist to help her stand.
"can we still make it?" coby asked, looking between john b and sarah.
"no. no. we - it's over. okay?" john b replied, shaking his head.
"no, it's not. i don't want it to be over." coby shrugged, her eyes looking around the office for a clock.
"jake -" sarah started.
"we still have a hour." coby interrupted.
"you need to rest. you just got shot." sarah reminded.
"i'm fine. i'm in a little pain, but i'm okay." coby told her girlfriend, looking down at her with raised eyebrows. "we're going. and if you guys don't wanna go, that's fine. i'll just limp all the way there by myself. and i know either of you don't want that." she finished, slowly pulling away from sarah.
the cameron girl rolled her eyes, watching as coby slowly started to walk towards the door. sarah then looked over to where john b was, seeing that the routledge boy was watching coby with a small smile. "we're going, aren't we?"
"i guess so." john b mumbled.
sarah shook her head slightly before she walked over to where coby was barely moving. "wait up, slowpoke. we're coming with you."
coby turned, a smile pulling at her plump lips as she felt sarah's arm slither around her waist. john b went to coby's other side, placing coby's arm around his shoulders so that he could help sarah carry her. before they left, nygard gently took the i.v needle out of her arm. with that, they left the apartment, dr.nygard trailing behind them. the three teens went back the way they had entered, john b and sarah telling coby that she needed to rest, which earned them a sarcastic comment from the curly haired girl. as they walked back through the bar before they peeked through the exit. they could hear the sirens that were blaring around the island.
"shit." john b whispered once his landed on an officer talking to some tourists. sarah, coby, and nygard saw this as well. "are you kidding me?"
"you guys got a little heat on you, don't you?" nygard asked the trio. "i've been there, and i've done that. but i got an idea." with that, nygard guided the pogues to the back and around the building, revealing an old car. nygard handed the keys to john b, "a friend of the devil is a friend of mine."
"thanks, doc." john b said, grabbing the keys.
coby stepped forward, taking the keys away from the long haired boy. she then walked towards the car, opening the back door before she gently climbed in. sarah climbed in after her, sending a thank you to nygard before she closed the door behind them.
"so how bad's it gonna be when the anesthesia wears off?" john b questioned as he walked around to the driver's side.
"pretty much mind-bending." nygard answered.
"all right, doc, how do i get this baby back to you?" john b then asked.
"you're just going to the wharf, right?"
"yeah, berth 39, right?" john b nodded as he got in the car. sarah grabbed the keys from coby and handed them to the routledge boy.
"perfect. put the keys under the gas cap, and we're good." nygard explained.
"are you sure we can take this?"
"well, you overpaid for the medical, so have a nice trip."
"thank you." sarah told the doctor, sending him a warm smile as john b put the keys into the ignition.
"thanks, doc." john b said, turning the key.
"you saved my life." coby thanked, looking through the window so that she could look at nygard.
nygard nodded at her, sending her a smile. with that, john b put the car into drive and slowly pulled out of the alleyway that the car was in. nygard waved at them before they disappeared, going to the wharf so that they could meet up with cleo, stubbs, and terrance. the car ride to the wharf was mostly silent, sarah making sure that coby was okay while john b focused on the road. he didn't want to bring any attention to themselves.
"how much do we have?" coby asked once they had appeared at the wharf, john b driving slowly.
"not much." the routledge boy answered as he rounded the corner. "shit! cops. should i peel?"
"no. just play dumb." sarah mumbled as they approached the cop cars.
an officer appeared in front of them, his arms out as he told them to slow down. john b did as told, slowly stepping on the brakes before the car came to a complete stop.
"just breathe." coby told john b.
"all right. i got this." he mumbled to himself as the officer started to walk towards his window.
"road's closed." the officer informed.
"what happened?" john b asked.
"robbery. there was a shootout. now move along." the officer answered, making coby's eyebrows furrow.
"well, is everybody okay?" john b questioned.
"move on." the officer told him before he walked away.
"guys." sarah whispered, making the two other pogues turn to look at her. she nodded her head towards something, coby and john b turning back around to see what. "we lost the gold."
"shit. i'm sorry, guys." john b apologized in a soft tone.
"fuck." coby hissed, throwing her head back in frustration. "so, i literally got shot for no fucking reason."
"guys?" john b called, watching the police officer start to walk back towards the car.
"go, go, go, go!" sarah rushed.
"fucking drive, johhny!" coby ordered.
the taller boy did as told, pulling off before he turned onto another street. they could hear the police yelling after them, telling them to stop the car. but john b kept on driving, the officers running after the car. john b turned onto another street, the sound of sirens appearing behind them. now, they knew what car the three of them were in. john b continued driving, trying his best to lose the cops. he quickly turned into another street, almost hitting another car as he did so. coby and sarah looked through the back window, making sure the cops didn't see.
"did they follow us?" john b asked the girls.
"no, they kept going." coby answered.
john b kept driving, swerving around people since the street was so narrow. "i almost hit that person." he mumbled.
and then, a figure rolled over the hood of the car and onto the windshield before it fell to the ground. john b immediately stepped on the brakes, a look of shock on his face.
"you just a hit a person." sarah told him, the boy not making a move to do anything.
"well, go see if they're okay!" coby demanded, the routledge boy doing as told.
john b quickly unbuckled his seat, getting out the car to go check on the person that he had hit. coby could hear the boy mumbling under his breath frantically, a nervous habit that he's had since he was in elementary school. "cleo?" he then asked, gaining the attention of coby and sarah.
"some freaking rescue!" the familiar voice of cleo commented, her voice strained.
john b then helped the girl up from the ground, apologizing to her before he told the people around them not to call the cops. he continued to apologize to cleo, helping the her to the car so that she could get in.
"you ran me over!" cleo pointed out, her voice still strained as she limped.
"i'm so sorry." john b apologize.
"where'd you get your license?"
"the great state of north carolina."
"you didn't see me in the street?"
"no, i didn't." john b answered, helping cleo into the passenger seat before he went back around to the driver's.
"mother -" cleo got ready to curse, shifting around in the seat before her eyes landed on the couple in the back seat. "hey! how'd you make it through, girl?" she asked coby.
"are you okay?" sarah and coby asked in unison.
"just a scrap, you know?" cleo shrugged. "i went up and over. been through worse. we should get outta here now."
"okay." john b mumbled, pulling off now the narrow road again as sirens started to approach. "what happened back there? we went to the playboy, and that place was hot! cops were everywhere!"
"we were waiting for you guys to show up, and the coppers came. they came from every direction. i jumped overboard." cleo explained.
"what about terrance and stubbs?" sarah questioned.
"i heard gunshots." cleo answered.
"what?" coby asked.
"i ran. i wanted to shoot it out with them, but it was too many." cleo elaborated as john b turned onto a main road.
"oh, boy! we got company." he announced just as sirens rang through the air.
"drive!" cleo ordered.
"does it go any faster?" sarah asked.
"i don't know. the speedometer doesn't work." john b replied.
"of course it doesn't work!" coby exclaimed, pressing a hand onto her side.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐆𝐔𝐄𝐒, 𝐏𝐋𝐔𝐒 𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐎, were able to get away from the cops, having drove onto the docs and pulled up between two boats that were parked on land instead of the water. they had been getting chased for about an hour, it getting darker and darker. cleo had instructed john b on where to go, obviously having experience on getting chased by the cops before. coby let out a pained groan from her side, the anesthesia starting to wear off. sarah heard this, placing a gently kiss onto coby's shoulder to try and bring the girl some comfort.
"you sure we're good, cleo?" john b asked.
"yeah, man. we'll just wait here until it cools down." cleo answered, leaning back in her seat.
john b turned to look at the couple in the back, seeing how coby was pressing her hand into her side. "you good, c?"
"fine." coby nodded.
the four waited sat in the car for a few minutes, waiting till they couldn't hear any sirens at all. the sun had gone down completely, being replaced by the moon and the stars. sarah had helped coby get out of the back seat, thinking that the curly haired girl was uncomfortable with being cooped up bad there all day. john b and cleo followed them out of the car too, leaning on it as they listened to their surroundings.
"street is quiet." cleo announced, breaking the silence. "i can get you to a boat. you have somewhere you can hole up?"
"yeah, we're gonna ride the gulf stream norther as far as it can go." john b answered.
"look for some deserted island to shell up on." coby added.
"and then what? more running?" sarah quizzed.
"cupcake. . ." coby mumbled, her voice trailing off.
"look, i know the both of you don't trust the cops, but you're both innocent. i think we should go home." sarah reasoned.
"to obx?" coby asked.
"yes." sarah nodded.
"what about ward?" coby challenged. john b and cleo kept their mouths shut, not wanting to add to the situation.
"what about ward?" sarah repeated. "he's the one who should be running, not us. he said he would tell the truth if we came back. i can confront him."
"okay, but it's not even about confronting him. he's completely untrustworthy." coby pointed out.
"sure. but i'm your alibi. trust me." sarah told coby, looking the taller girl in the eyes. coby looked back, the expression on her face softening.
cleo then whistled, pulling the two girls out of their little debate. "hello, lovebirds, we're running from the coppers right now." she reminded, her eyes landing on coby. "girl, can you walk?"
"yeah." coby nodded, slowly leaning off of the car.
"okay, you got this, girl." cleo assured as she leaned off the car as well. she then brought her voice down to a whisper, "come on, guys. we gotta go. stay low. we gotta go."
"we're following your lead." john b said, letting cleo get in the front.
"get low." cleo instructed as they hid behind a boat.
sarah wrapped coby's arm around her shoulders to help her walk. cleo started to lead the three pogues from behind the boat, reminding them that they needed to stay low. they then walked onto one of the wooden docs, coby and john b looking at all the boats that were tied to it.
"is this cool?" john b asked.
"i got an uncle who works at this marina. we're safe here." cleo reassured as she led the other down the dock. she then stopped next to a boat that had a warm thrown over it. "recognize the boat.
"my dad's boat." sarah smiled, keeping a firm grip on coby.
"i thought you guys would've pawned it by now." john b joked, climbing onto the boat.
"seems like a goof time to give it back to you." cleo shrugged, pulling the tarp from over it.
coby smiled at the shorter girl, feeling sarah pull away from her. coby then looked down at john b, who had his hands out so that he could help her. she grabbed one of his hands, gripping it tightly as she stepped down onto the boat. sarah was right behind her, making sure that coby didn't lose her balance. the blonde beauty then stepped down on to the boat, helping coby sit down.
"wish i could join you guys. it's a nice dinghy." cleo said, making coby look at her with furrowed eyebrows.
"you're not coming with?" the sawyer girl questioned.
"are you kidding? you three are so hot. i'm better off on my own." cleo answered, a small smile on her face. coby mirrored the smile, sending the girl a nod.
"thank you. seriously." john b said.
"no problem." cleo told him before her eyes went over to coby and sarah. "maybe one day, i get the same thing you two got." she mumbled, a smile still on her face. she then gestured between john b and coby. "or even the friendship that you two got. somebody helps me too. hang tight. i'm gonna get the keys. too soon for goodbyes, y'all. i'll be right back!"
"thanks, cleo." john b shot at her as she ran back down the dock to retrieve the keys.
"do we have enough gas?" sarah asked, standing up from her spot next to coby.
john b went to go check, nodding his head. "um, we should be good if the wind's behind us."
"let's pray that it is." coby mumbled.
"hey! you there!" a voice boomed, gaining the there pogues' attention. they couldn't really see the person since they were shining a flashlight at them, but the three did hear a gun cock. "put your hands up! all the way up!"
the trio did as told, looking at the officer with a scared look. why did they have to be caught right when they were about to leave?
"hey, don't shoot, okay?" john b said.
"i said put them up." the officer repeated, stepping closer to the boat with his flashlight and gun at the teenagers.
"please, they didn't do anything!" sarah tried.
before the officer could say anything else, cleo came up behind and hit him in the back of the head with an oar. the officer let out a scream as he fell to the dock, cleo going to run over him. but he quickly grabbed at her ankle, making her fall in front of him. cleo quickly used her other foot to kick him in the face, the officer letting go so that he could bring his hands up to his nose. cleo was quick to get up, throwing the keys to the boat at john b. the routledge boy caught them with ease.
"go! get out of here!" cleo told them before she jumped off the dock and into the water.
"hey! stop! get back here!" the officer ordered, trying to catch cleo.
sarah and coby pushed the boat away from the dock while john b suck the key into the ignition. the officer had all of his attention on cleo, shooting his gun at her. that gave the pogues time to untie the boat and start to pull away from the dock. by the time that the officer realized what they were doing, they were already far enough from the dock. coby smiled, bringing her hands up in a mock salute before she stuck her middle finger up.

𝐈𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒 𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 three pogues left nassau, john b driving them to the middle of the ocean. coby and sarah had stayed up all night with the routledge boy, wanting to keep him company. well, that was one of the reasons. coby couldn't exactly sleep because of the amount of pain she was in and sarah wanted to keep a close eye on coby. the sun was starting to rise over the horizon, the dark night sky melting away into a baby blue.
"all right, this is the gulf stream. it's gonna take us north right home." john b announced, making sarah smile.
"good." the blonde beauty mumbled, turning to look at her girlfriend.
"yay." coby muttered weakly.
"i'm gonna lay down." john b told the girls, making the both of them nod. he slid out of the seat and moved to the stern of the boat, laying down o the floor.
"how you doing?" sarah asked.
coby shrugged slightly, "never better."
sarah nodded, placing a gentle kiss onto coby's shoulder. "you know what i was thinking?"
"what's that?" coby questioned.
"let's get married." sarah answered, immediately making coby perk up.
the sawyer girl winced from how fast she moved, brining her hand up to her side. "don't - don't we need, like, a - a, like, a preacher or something?" she asked, earning a shrug from sarah. "what about the rings?"
"what about rings?" sarah repeated, her voice soft as she looked at the girl she loves. "i mean, for future reference, i like princess cut. i like emerald cut. never pear shape."
coby smiled at that, keeping note of everything that just left sarah's mouth. she was really planning on marrying the girl someday. "well, until i can get you those. . . i've got an idea." she mumbled.
sarah furrowed her eyebrows, not knowing what coby had meant. the curly haired girl didn't say anything, reaching behind her neck to unclasp the silver chain that's been there for as long as she can remember. she then took off one of the rings that were on her fingers, sliding it onto the chain.
"princess cut. my favorite." sarah said, making coby smile at her.
"i give you this. . . dirty chain that i've had for a long ass time as a token of my love." coby told sarah, clasping the chain around the freckled girl's neck. "and you also get a ring that i got out of a cereal box."
"it's perfect." sarah smiled, bringing a hand up to the ring.
"yeah." coby nodded.
"by the power invested in me, by the sky and the stars and the sea, i now pronounce us wife and wife." sarah announced.
"through sickness and health, through rich and poor, till death do us part." coby added, her eyes flickering down to sarah's lips.
"you may kiss your bride." sarah whispered.
coby wasted no time in leaning in, bringing a hand up to sarah's jawline as their lips met. fireworks went off around them as their lips molded against each others, butterflies fluttering in their stomachs. no matter how many times they kissed, coby will never get tired of the feeling she gets when they do.
"can we get a dog?" sarah asked once she pulled away.
"hell yeah, we can get a dog." coby nodded, a chuckle escaping her lips. "we just gotta get home first."
