Nixie gazed out the window as they drove. She was sitting close to JJ, who was attempting to calm down from the recent events that had just taken place. JJ had his hand in his hair. Nixie was trying to focus on the present now. They took the life of a defenceless animal for no reason.
"I mean, it's obvious, right?" Nixie was really beginning to grow tired of this whole compass thing, since they were almost killed because of it. John B spoke as he looked at the rest of the group. "A family heirloom. What better place to hide a message? He had to know it was gonna get back to me, right?"
"Yeah. It's possible." The agreement was made by Kiara in an effort to prevent John B from losing his mind over it.
"It could also be possible that you're concocting wild theories to help, you know, deal with your sad feels." According to Pope, as everyone was staring at him, JJ nudged him with a warning while John B threw him a sneer.
"Pope?"
"Bro, you know how I process my sad feels." JJ started.
"This should be good." As Nixie cocked her head to meet his gaze, a smile spread across her lips.
"Dank nugs and the stickiest of ickies, that's how I do it." Pope and Nixie exchanged knowing glances and giggled slightly as he confessed.
"I'm not concocting, okay?" While John B. clung firmly to the wheel, Nixie returned her gaze to the window. "My dad's trying to give me a message."
"If it helps you believe, John B." Looking at his helpless expression, Kiara murmured quietly.
As he attempted to comprehend everything, John B sat there in silence. "Look, I-I don't need a therapy session, okay?" Anger welled up inside of him, and he stammered as he glanced over at Kiara. "Look, I'm not trippin' out."
"John B., I get it." Seeing the tears in his eyes, Nixie looked at him and murmured. "If your father did this for you, then you follow it. I know what it's like to have the closest thing to you taken away and no one saying anything or being sympathetic about it. But that doesn't matter. What matters is what you're going to do."
Nixie couldn't stop thinking about her father and how much she missed him. Finally realising he wasn't in this alone, John B glanced at her.
"My mum has a photo of her, your dad, and my dad, so it's safe to say that my dad was involved in whatever it was that your dad was searching for." John B. and her were brought together by their dads, and she finally spoke what she had been suppressing.
"Why were those things not mentioned earlier?" As he turned to face her, John B. questioned.
"At first, I didn't give it much thought, but then I noticed that the photo of your dad in his office looked almost exactly like the one in my mom's room."
"Look, what do you think the message is?" Not wanting an argument, Kiara redirected the subject back to the compass. John B. shifted his gaze to her.
"Redfield." Nixie looked like it had a big closed sign on it because of the hurricane, which isn't surprising," as they drove past a sign that reads "Redford lighthouse. That's my dad's favorite place."
While admiring the lighthouse from the van, the gang disembarked out of it. John B. came over to Nixie and shot her a glance. "We haven't finished discussing this; you're more invested than I anticipated." She looked at him with her arms crossed over her chest.
"Right. You're gonna post up and look out for bogeys, okay?" John B said as he glanced over at J.J., who was visibly perplexed.
"Wait... Why me?" JJ spoke, raising his eyebrow.
"Because you're not coming." Pope replied seriously, but that didn't convince JJ.
"Why?"
"There are independent and dependent variables." Nixie couldn't help but roll her eyes at the two of them because she could think of something more productive to do at this moment.
"Listen to me for a second." Nixie caught their attention as they turned to see the boy with the curly hair. "With Pope and JJ, I'm putting you in charge, so watch out, alright? If we get split up, we meet back at JJ's house."
"Indeed, sir." She turned around and gave him a sly salute. "Fucking asshole." She muttered.
"I'm gonna work on my merit scholarship essay, and I'm trying to keep felonies to a minimum." Pope spoke as they watched John B and Kiara jump the fence.
"All right, would you just shut up already?" JJ mumbled. With a frustrated exhale, Nixie made her way back to the van, leaving the two of them bewildered. "Is it only me, or does she remind you of someone?" JJ inquired.
"Probably nobody, because you have a terrible memory, dude." As Pope approached Nixie , who was leaning her head against the seat, he proceeded by him and remarked.
"Are you alright, Nix ?" As Pope sat across from her, she glanced at him and shrugged, unsure of how to respond.
"The entire thing hinges on a major "what if?" John B. is determined to recover what little remains after Big John abruptly abandoned his kid. In my opinion, that is not the making of a wonderful father." While she fiddledย with her fingers, she muttered.
"All we can do, Nix, is stand by him. Navigating through it, and if he desires to pursue it, we will do the same. No Pogue should be forgotten." He smiled; she returned the gesture, and they both turned to watch JJ kick the little ball.
Prior to the sound of the police car's sirens, Nixie was about to say something else. "Fuck," she exclaimed as she rose from her seat. JJ quickly started to run over.
"Let's go." Pope got into the passenger seat and made the statement. John B. and Kiara quickly got out of there but they were already gone as JJ drove down the dirt road. Nixie leant her head back in her chair and let out a heavy sigh. Conscious that this was more of an issue than she had anticipated.
