Episode: Season 9 - I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here Pt. 2Β
I had only been back for a few minutes, just watching Sam, hoping - praying - he'd wake up. But he never moved. Suddenly, the door squeaked open and in walked a petite middle-aged brunette with a warm, friendly gaze although her expression became somber when her eyes settled on me.
"Hey. I'm just gonna break the ice. Are you an angel?" I asked immediately as she strode into the tiny room.
She half-chuckled, "Sometimes I wish I were. My name is Kim Schortz, and I'm a grief counselor here at the hospital,"
"Right, yeah, uh..." I stumbled over my words, shaking my head at her, "Sorry. I'm just tired. Well, all due respect, but, uh, I'm not grieving - not yet at least, so..."
"I'm afraid, as hard as this may be, this might be a good time to talk. About the inevitable,"
Her words made my stomach bottom out, sapping all the air from my lungs.
"Look, I'm sure you're a nice person and that you mean well, but 'inevitable' - that's a fightin' word where I come from. There's always a way," I told her determinedly, fighting the catch in my throat.
"And I am a prayerful woman who believes in miracles as much as the next, but I also know how to read an E. E. G. And unless you're telling me you have a direct line to those angels that you were looking for-"
"Yeah. No, I, uh...guess I don't..." I admitted before an idea hit me, "But I might have something better. I've got the King of Hell in my trunk,"
With that, I stalked out of the room with a half-triumphant smile plastered to my face. But not before hearing the woman ask, "That is - is that, um, I'm sorry, is that a metaphor?"
Or rather, I was going to get help from Crowley. Until an angel contacted me. His name was Ezekiel and after a quick call from Cas, I finally agreed to his help. Cas even insisted upon coming to help but I shut him down.
"Hey, Cas, listen to me. There are angels out there, okay?" I said into the cellphone pressed to my ear as I paced the hallway, "And they - they're looking for you, and they're mad,"
"Not all of them, Dean. Some are just looking for direction. Some are just lost," Cas replied on the other end of the line before changing the subject, "Dean, how's Parker?"
A sigh left my lips and I shook my head even though I knew he couldn't see me, "It's pretty bad, man. She...she lost a lot of blood. And she hasn't woken up yet. The doctors...they had to start the C-Section to save the baby. Cas...Cas, I just...I know what she did and that that baby may not even be mine but-"
"I know, Dean. Don't worry - she's in good hands. I'll be on my way as soon as I can to help. I promise," he assured me before asking the question I dreaded most, "Is...can they tell if the baby-"
"Yeah. Yeah, they can. I...I asked and they said they would once the baby's born," I confirmed, feeling a slight twinge of guilt before pushing it down.
"Dean, look, if it's not-" Cas started but before he could finish, a baby's cry pierced the air, making me drop the phone in surprise.
It landed on the cold tile floor with a clatter. I could hear Cas on the other line but all I could think about was the baby crying in the other room - Parker's baby. Suddenly, a nurse stepped out of the room, beaming over at me with a bright smile.
"It's a boy!"
I didn't know what to expect when I walked in, if I'm being honest. Parker was still lying on the bed, stomach considerably flatter but otherwise, still unmoving. A baby cried again and finally, my eyes landed on the small blue bundle nestled in the nurse's arms. The infant was darker than both me and Sam, having Parker's olive-complexion. My eyes widened in surprise and awe. Just then another nurse, holding crisp white papers in her hand whispered something to the one holding the baby, making the latter's smile falter as she met my gaze hesitantly.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Winchester but...it seems as if you are not the father of this child."
