011. "The ball"

1518 London, England

"No, we ought to go. Please Maddison, you need to loosen up a little, we will have a great time. I promise." Faith pouts trying to convince me to go with her while moving around the kitchen, putting some ingredients in order.

"Thank you for the invitation Fae, truly but... I really don't think it's a good idea for me to come...." i sigh handing her a small sack of potatoes to place in the left cabinet. Then, I strike another match and throw into the stone oven so the dinner is cooked faster.

"Of course it isn't a good idea. Don't be stupid child, a ball? too many leading eyes, and you know what happens when you lose control. Death. Then word will spread and you and your dear mother will have to run. Again and again and-"

"Shut up." I say sharply my voice a little bit above a whisper.

Lilith. It was like she was always in my head. Her voice. Cold and dangerous. She was a never ending reminder of my curse, or, as my mother would call it,  my "gift".

It was hard to see it as a gift though. Lilith wanted me to become a killer, to be feared and when I tried to go against her she would never fail to remind me of my "true purpose" in this world.

Besides, that was the reason we had to run away from our last place some moths ago. My mom had convinced a knight to take us in and in return of a place to stay we would ensure to help his wife and children around the house.

And truth to be told, everything was going great. Until I set him and his house on fire.

"What? Why, what did I say?" Faith looks at me with a confused look.

"Wh- no, no you, you didn't say anything...I just, um-"

"Girls, did you finish everything the king is hungry" My and Faith's mom enter the kitchen in a hurry, quickly grabbing plates, knifes and forks.

"Almost yes" faith tells them as she checks the cauldron.

Faith was the cook's daughter of the castle, she was a year younger than me and both her and her mother were the sweetest. They were the ones that had convinced the king to let us stay with them and made sure we would feel welcomed by the time we stepped foot in here.

Plus, after some weeks, me and her became pretty close friends, so I had to stay controlled for both of their shakes.

"Absolutely not, you will not sneak into the ball, what if the knights catch you, the king will kick out all four of us." Faith's mother says firmly, looking at her daughter.

"Mom the king will never know and the knights wouldn't dare to say a word, we've been secretly offering them food for decades now so I-"

"Faith. End of discussion."

Me and my mom were sitting on the other side of the room listening intently to the ongoing conversation and well, I actually felt bad for her. But, there were lots of risks to take under consideration and I preferred to stay out of trouble for as long as I could.

"You could protect her.." my mom whispers to me as she puts a piece of bread in her mouth.

"What?"

"What did I teach you last week? You can erase the memory of anyone that sees you, it will be as if you're invisible, no one will know. This way you can practice and have some fun" she smiles reassuringly.

"Or you can pick out the eyeballs of anyone that dares to look at your direction" Lilith's voice can be heard on my mind once again.

I ignore it.

"I don't want to hurt anyone. What if I erase every possible memory they have or I accidentally hurt them, I will put all of us at risk, I don't...i don't want to hurt people." I try to prevent my voice from cracking.

"You will not hurt them, and even if you do erase all of their memories you can bring them back. You have this kind of power inside of you sweetheart. Just because you're powerful doesn't mean that you're dangerous too, I believe in you."

"You do?"

"Absolutely"

Me and Faith were sitting on a corner of the ball room, examining the people that were entering, making sure we go unnoticed by anyone.

"I wish I was a princess so I could dance too" Faith's voice breaks the silence.

"Being part of loyalty doesn't determine whether you should be dancing or not" I speak softly trying to make her feel better.

"Why would anyone want to dance with a palace servant?" she says her tone betraying the sadness she must been feeling.

"I would love to dance with you" i smile at her warmly and she returns me one.

As the night continued, more people came to the ball, the music was louder, almost everyone was dancing and the people that were not, were happily chatting and laughing with their friends and partners.

Me and Fae were in the balcony of the castle dancing rhythmically with the music
that could be heard from the main room.
"Have I mention that I don't know how to dance?" I chuckle as she spins me around playfully.
"Neither can I but, who cares?" She replies and we both chuckle.
But as we were dancing a man caught my eye.

He was a painter, or it seemed like he was one. He was sitting on a tiny chair, painting a portrait at the balcony right next to us.

While I was unintentionally staring at him, he turned his head to look at me, his gaze meeting mine. Our eye's locked for a couple of seconds which resulted to classic me slightly blushing and immediately turning my head away.

"I heard he just came from Copenhagen." Faith's voice distracts me from my thoughts.

"Who?" I ask confused.

"The painter you've been staring at for the last three minutes" she tells me with a slight smirk on her lips.

"I wasn't staring...So he's from Denmark?" I say curiously as I can still feel him looking at me.

"No, no he's not from Denmark. I heard two servants talking about him this morning. They said that he just travels a lot...Oh and that him and his family own lots of money.."

"Really? And what's his family's name?"

"The Mikealson's."
