In the revolution of 1918, Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanova and her older sister, Maria, escape from a cellar where the rest of the royal Romanov family are executed. In a desperate attempt to flee Yekaterinburg, the two sisters are separated ― seemingly never to see one another again. Having been cursed by the terrifying Grigori Rasputin to never age, the princess is forced to survive with no memories and no name through some of the most brutal decades of her Russia's history.

In the world war of 1945, Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes is not saved by his best friend, Steve Rogers, and falls from a train to the icy Danube River hundreds of feet below. Against all odds, due to Arnim Zola's experiments, he survives the fall to the ground and, instead, falls into the vicious hands of HYDRA. Losing all memories of his former life, he becomes nothing more than a weapon to be used. Over the next fifteen years, the sergeant becomes a formidable fighter and an even more ruthless killer.

Many years later, in the bright summer of 1960 ― the glory days of HYDRA's most lethal weapon, there is a rumor in what used to be St. Petersburg that there lives a girl who never ages. A ghost chasing a rumor, the Winter Soldier is sent on a mission into Khrushchev's USSR to locate and extract the amnesiatic orphan known simply as "Anya". When he cannot find it within himself to deliver the fiery redhead to their captors, the soldier makes a deal to deliver the orphan Anya to Paris to find her real family and escape from HYDRA's clutches in the process.
