Ben sat at the edge of the bed holding tightly onto Lydia's hand. It was clear she was in a lot of pain–pain which he had caused. Lydia clenched onto his hand so tightly that it hurt, but he wouldn't tell her that. He had to be there for her. Tears pricked at his eyes seeing her lying there with her eyes clenched shut from the pain.

Mrs. Washington entered the room," I've sent for the doctor but if this is what I suspect, all we can do is make her comfortable."

Ben's brow furrowed as Lydia's grip on his hand began to loosen. He looked at her. Her eyes were open, but they were slowly beginning to close as if she were fighting off fainting to unconsciousness. "Lyddie, stay awake," Ben ordered her.

"Benj, I'm tired," Lydia mumbled.

"You need to stay awake."

"Major Tallmadge," Mrs. Washington said lightly, placing a hand on Ben's shoulder. "She's been through quite an ordeal, sleep might do her some good."

"But what if she doesn't wake up?" Ben's voice broke and he sounded almost childish.

"It's in the Lord's hands, son."

Ben kissed Lydia's hand as he could see her losing her fight trying to stay conscious.

"Benj, I love you," Lydia barely choked out before she faded into unconsciousness Ben sat there, holding Lydia's hand, never leaving her side. He didn't want to leave her until she was well again.
