CASSIE ALWAYS FELT LIKE SOMETHING was
missing in her life, though she could never pinpoint
exactly what. Raised by her mother, Virginia Banks,
Cassie's already confusing life shifted the moment
her mom started dating a man named Waylon. At
first, he was some other guy, someone Cassie
wrote off as 'temporary'. But then... He stayed. He
didn't just vanish. And the longer he stayed, Cassie
noticed he became more aggressive. First, with his
words. And three months into knowing him, it
became his actions. Cassie remembers vividly the
first time she watched him hit her mother. And she

Three months later, he turned his aggression, his

her mother's room. In the picture, a younger version
of Virginia stood next to a man Cassie had never
seen before, her belly round with pregnancy. Flipping
it over, Cassie found a handwritten note: "Welcome
to Outer Banks, Cass! —Big John & Vinny ღ." Cassie
could piece together that "Vinny" was her mother,
but the man—Big John—was a mystery. Who was he?

One night, with Waylon asleep in her mother's
room and Virginia quietly washing dishes in the
kitchen, Cassie couldn't hold back anymore. She
confronted her mother with the photo. Virginia's
answer was simple but life-changing: The man in
the picture—Big John—was her father. That was
all Cassie needed to know. Cassie did her research.
She found where the Outer Banks was and packed
a duffel bag with whatever she could carry. Before
she left, she searched for some money, only to find
$400 tucked in her mother's bedside table. Next to
it sat a note that simply read: "Be safe."

Cassie didn't say goodbye. She didn't have to.
Deep down, she felt her mother already knew.
