Chapter 8

To say that you were tired would be an understatement.

Breathing heavily, you stayed behind the others as they climbed up the small ledge that had come before you all; trying to catch your breath after all of the running and dodging you had been doing recently.

"(Y/n)?"

Inhaling deeply, you groaned and stretched until you heard a satisfying pop come from your muscles before looking up, only to blink in surprise at the sight of Jin holding his hand out to you, a worried look on his face.

"Take my hand. I'll help you up."

Albeit hesitantly, you slowly nodded and placed your smaller hand in his before jumping up and using your other one to latch onto the ledge. Once you did so, Jin began to pull you up, and you helped him by using your feet to propel yourself upwards.

And out of all of the things you expected to happen, landing yourself into Jin's arms again and nearly causing him to fall backwards was not one of them.

"Oh!" Feeling your cheeks heat up out of embarrassment, you quickly scrambled out of Jin's arms before anything else could happen and stood up; dusting yourself off.

"S-sorry..." you muttered, holding your own hand out to the boy and looking away shyly.

Hearing a chuckle from Jin at your reaction, your cheeks only flushed more when you felt his hand grasp yours, and you quickly pulled him back up onto his own feet.

"Thanks." Though you weren't looking up to face him, you could still hear the smile in his voice, and although it made you feel nice to hear him speak so warmly to you again, you still couldn't help the small liver of pain that shot throughout your entire being as you remembered just how long it had been since you've actually spoken to eachother.

"Um, yeah..." Clearing your throat to regain your composure, you moved a strand of your hair out of your face before turning away from him to walk away.

"No problem."

(Huh. Funnily enough, this is the second time you've said this to him. Weird.)

With all of that said and done, you walked over to join your sister's side; unaware of the pained and longing look Jin was giving you as he watched you go.

You should apologize to her, you know, a voice in his head stated matter-of-factly, making Jin narrow his eyes and shake his head. "No," he muttered, waving a dismissive hand around in the air.

"Not yet. Not now."

"Gosh," you chuckled breathlessly and sat down on the grass, crossing your legs and resting your arms across your knees, "I'm so—"

"Exhausted?"

Looking up to see your sister walking over to you, you both shared a smile with one another as she threw her bag to the floor next to you and laid down; using it as a pillow of the sorts.

"Yeah," your sister sighed contently and closed her eyes, as did you when you felt the cool, night breeze brush along your face. "Me too."

"What?"

Yawning, you looked over to see Jin walking over to you and your sister, his expression being that of a critical one.

"Why are you guys stopping?" he asked, earning a small roll of the eyes from Yí.

"Because," she began, rolling over to lay on her side comfortably before continuing, "in about five minutes, we won't be able to see our hands in front of our faces," she explained, acting as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, making you giggle.

"And that is exactly why we've got to keep moving," Jin replied, walking past you and your sister and giving you both a look. "Alright? Come on, Peng. We need to get back to that dock."

You and Yí shared a look, your expressions reading the same thing:

'He won't even last a day out there.'

Snorting out of amusement, you looked over your shoulder and watched as Jin walked towards the forest. Just as he was about to enter, though, he came to a sudden stop; tensing at the sight of the yellow eyes glaring down at him from the branches above. At seeing this, he of course immediately turned around and began walking back, looking as if he had seen a ghost.

"You know what? Camping out here may actually be our best bet for now, now that I think about it. We'll leave first thing in the morning, instead," Jin decided, earning a, "Yes!" from Peng and a smug look from you and Yí, to which he rolled his eyes at before laying down on the opposite side of you, leaving you to be sitting in between of him and your sister.

"There's so many..." Yí began to trail off, staring up at the stars above in awe.

"Bugs?" Jin offered, cutting her off before she could continue as he tried swiping away all of the bugs that had begun to surround him (which you secretly snickered at).

"No, silly," you said, flicking Jin on his forehead before joining your sister in staring up at the night sky, a smile on your face. "Stars."

Groaning, Jin made a disgusted face and sat up suddenly, still trying to wave all of the bugs buzzing around him off. "How come they're only swarming me?"

Yí let out a barely audible snort. "Maybe they're ladybugs," she suggested, making you quickly clamp your hands over your mouth to suppress your laughter.

"Haha, lady — Not funny," Jin shot back, sending your sister a small glare, which she casually ignored.

"Well—" Peng (who was currently getting a noogie from Everest) peeked his head out from behind one of the yeti's furry arms, now beginning to stare up at the stars, too "—my mom told me that the stars are out ancestors, who always watch over us," the boy told, only for Everest to go back to noogying him soon after, much to the 10 year old's misfortune.

Chuckling, Yí nodded and smiled in amusement at Everest's and Peng's antics, before averting her gaze back up at the stars and saying, "Our mom says that, too."

Suddenly — after finally managing to get out of Everest's hold — Peng ran up to Yí and snatched her bag out from beneath her head, making the ravenette grunt as her head came into contact with the ground, all whilst her sister began to laugh as she watched the younger boy run off; her sister's bag now sitting over his head like a mask.

"My backpack? Peng!" The said boy only roared in reply to Yí's complaints, and the brown-eyed girl found herself rolling her eyes and allowing him to just walk off with it, seeing as how starting a fight wouldn't really do anything other than make things worse.

Speaking of 'things getting worse', by the way...

"Oh, no. No, no, no!"

Curiously looking over to Jin (who had laid back down, his phone held up in their air almost desperately), you watched as the boy groaned in despair and allowed his arms to fall down to his sides; phone still held in his hand.

"Great," he began, obviously upset, "No reception."

As if to confirm his words, his phone let out a fairly loud Beep! and Jin sat back up, staring down at his phone's screen angrily. "I'm entirely cut off from my social life," he finished, huffing.

"Mm." Yí rolled her eyes, "How traumatic."

You decided to keep silent. Bringing your knees up to your chest, you wrapped your arms around them and opted to hide your face behind them, quickly noticing the bickering that would soon take place.

"Yeah, Yí, it is," Jin started, his shoulders going tense as he went on, "Because unlike you two, I like having friends. I'm not some kind of a-a..."

"Loner?" you whispered, voice quiet and fragile as you buried your face behind your knees so that Jin wouldn't see your expression when he turned to face you.

"Is...is that what you were going to say...?"

Jin didn't respond, and even if he wanted to, he was too late, because Yí had started speaking as well.

"Well, for your info, we're self-proclaimed loners. There's a difference," Yí's eyes narrowed slightly, "okay?"

As if Yí's voice had brought him back to reality, Jin actually gave a reply this time, just as snappy as ever.

"Fine, because in the morning, Peng and I are headed back to the city."

"..."

With Jin's back now turned to you, you slowly lifted your head back up and shared a look with your sister, who seemed to be on the same page as you.

"W-we can't leave him," Yí stated, speaking up after a moment of silence.

Jin immediately stopped what he was doing; shoulders still tense and the grip on his phone tight as he slowly looked over his shoulder to face you and your sister.

"Yí. (Y/n)." His voice was stern; his tone scolding.

"Jin, you—" With a grin appearing on your face, you finally turned to face the boy; (E/c) eyes holding a shine that hardly anyone could name.

"You've seen what he can do. He — he's amazingHe's...magical," you finished, voice breathless and filled with awe.

"Oh," Jin rolled his eyes, chuckling mockingly. "So now, he's a magical yeti?" he asked, voice dripping with sarcasm.

You frowned at this and your brows furrowed. You opened your mouth, wanting to say something else, but you were quickly cut off by Jin before you could even utter another word.

"Do you even realize how crazy you and Yí sound, (Y/n)?" he asked, making you instantly shut your mouth again and look away.

And as if noticing your struggle, Yí placed a comforting hand on your shoulder and decided to carry on your argument for you.

"Look what happened with the blueberries," your twin pointed out, smiling hopefully.

Jin scoffed and looked away. "That wasn't him!" he exclaimed, gesturing over to Everest. "That was a natural phenomenon. Just...one that I can't explain...yet."

The unsureness in his voice was enough to tell you that maybe even he could tell that he was just lying to himself.

Looking past Jin, you couldn't help but smile slightly at the sight of Peng and Everest playing around. From the looks of it, they were playing thumb war, and Everest had easily one. After he did, though, Peng playfully punched him, and he instantly got punched back. You winced when you saw the boy get knocked back a few feet, but your worries were quickly washed away when Peng came running back and tackled Everest to the floor, causing the both of them to begin a wrestling match of the sorts and roll around on the floor.

It was adorable, to put it simply.

But, apparently, it wasn't to Jin.

"Would you two please just give it a rest?" the boy asked, watching the yeti and his cousin roll around in the dirt with an annoyed look in his eyes.

That annoyed look, however, was quickly replaced with one of realization and dread. "Oh, my gosh," he began, shoulders slumping. "I'm beginning to sound like my parents."

Now, it was both yours and Yí's turns to have a realization.

Gasping, you suddenly stood up, a large smile on your face. "That's it!" you said.

"Huh?" Standing up with Yí at the same time, Jin looked between you and the yeti, clearly confused. "What's it?" he asked.

"Everest!" you replied. "That's why him and Peng get along so well!" you exclaimed.

Jin still looked confused. "Yeah, I'm not following you."

Yí, from beside you, laughed, and gestured over to Everest with her hand. "Everest is just...a kid! He's probably, like, the same age as Peng but it yeti years!" she explained, placing her hand on her hip as your trio watched Peng repeatedly hit Everest in the face with his own fist; chanting, "Stop hitting yourself. Stop hitting yourself" playfully.

Jin, being the skeptic he is, merely rolled his eyes at yours and Yí's words and crossed his arms, giving you a look from the corner of his eye.

"Right. There's no way that giant thing is a kid," he stated doubtfully.

You and Yí shared a look, when your sister suddenly perked up and grabbed your hand in her own. "Wait," she smiled, "We'll prove it to you!" And with that, she dragged you over to Everest with her, and Jin quickly followed suit.

(And no, he definitely wasn't following you close behind because he felt slightly protective of you. No, definitely not.)

"Everest, come here."

At the sound of Yí's voice, the yeti quickly did as told and walked over to sit in front of you both; his eyes innocently wide and curious all at the same time.

"This—" your sister smiled, picking a small, round rock up and holding it in front of Everest's face for him to see "—is you."

With Everest's eyes still on the rock, the yeti watched as your sister placed it down, and he instantly crawled over to it; staring down at it with curiosity and wonder.

"And these—" picking up two bigger rocks, you placed them on either side of the rock that was supposed to represent Everest "—are your parents."

"Aw." Leaning against Everest's arm, Peng smiled down fondly at the small family of rocks and said, "You have your mother's eyes."

Everest didn't do anything for a while; only staring at the three rocks that had been placed in front of him. But then, he suddenly sniffled and moaned sadly; picking up the rocks that were supposed to represent his parents and cradling them close to his chest.

The sight broke your heart, to be honest, and you and Yí quickly ran over to him and gave him a comforting hug.

"Don't worry. We'll make sure you get home," Yí assured, gently raking her fingers through Everest's hair.

"Oh, really?" Jin started, tone of voice disbelieving and sarcastic as he walked up to all of you.

"What are you gonna do? Take him all the way back to Mount Everest?" he asked, eyes narrowed disapprovingly.

"Maybe we are," Yí shot back, eyes filled with determination.

"Jin, please." Stepping out from behind Everest, you gave Jin a pleading look and clasped your hands together. "He needs to get back to his family. We can't just leave him alone, especially with all of those people after him—"

"Well, what about your family, (Y/n)?" Jin snapped, making you flinch and tear your eyes away from his as he stepped closer to you.

"Don't they need you and Yí, too?" he continued, crossing his arms and looking away from you with a scoff. "Always busy, never home?" He shook his head, turning back to face you once again, yet you were still yet to meet his eyes. "What's that all about, (Y/n)?"

(Here's an interesting thing about the (L/n) siblings, in case you're interested:

If one of them won't snap themself, then the other one will do it for them.)

"Don't talk to us about family, Jin," Yí growled, stepping in front of you protectively with a harsh glare being directed towards the boy standing in front of you both.

"You have no ideaNO IDEA. You're..." Stopping for a moment, Yí took a deep breath before going on.

"Your life, is so easy, Jin. Do you even...do you even want to be a doctor, or do you just think that you'll — I don't know — you'll look good in white?"

Jin's lips straightened out to form a line; his eyes hard and narrowed into a glare. "Alright," he shrugged. "Call me shallow all you want. At least I'm not delusional," he said, turning and beginning to walk away, only to come to a stop at the sound of snoring and turning around with you and Yí.

(Even despite the heartache clawing inside of your chest, you still managed to smile at the sight of Peng and Everest sleeping; cuddled up together and warm.)

Turning away from the sleeping boy and the sleeping yeti, Yí huffed and took your hand in hers once again; walking past Jin and purposely hitting her shoulder against his as she dragged you away from him.

"I don't care if you think we're crazy," she muttered, making Jin roll his eyes.

"You're impossible," he grumbled back.

As the two laid back down on the grass — their backs facing eachother — you could only sigh as you laid down as well; sitting directly in the middle of them both, almost like a wall.

Deep, deep down, something told you that you probably won't be able to sleep very well tonight.
