STRANGER THINGS 2
episode six
THEY FINALLY GOT TO THE JUNKYARD. Steve sighed, wearing his sunglasses as he took in the view. Removing the sunglasses, he wiped them clean with his shirt. Walking over to the middle of the junkyard, his eyes squinting in the bright sun, he commented, "This will do just fine," with a grin. "Good call, dude... and Fina," he acknowledged, appreciating the choice of location for their next move.
Josie was taken aback by the new nickname as Steve reached into the bucket and pulled out a piece of raw meat. With a flick of his wrist, he threw it onto the ground. They looked up at Steve, anticipating his next move. Without a word, Steve began to walk towards the junkyard, and Dustin and Josie followed closely behind.
As they came to a stop at the edge of the junkyard, Steve looked out at the sight before them. The junkyard sprawled before them, a vast expanse of twisted metal and broken glass. The sun glinted off the piles of rusted cars and old appliances. Steve's eyes lit up with excitement as he surveyed the scene, a sense of anticipation filling the air.
"I said medium-well!" The familiar voice echoed around them. Josie turned her head and spotted Max standing beside Lucas. A pang of jealousy surged through her as she observed Max engaged in conversation and sharing smiles with Lucas. The effortless way Max seemed to captivate everyone's attention fueled Josie's envy.
Max turned and looked directly at her. Josie felt her heart skip a beat as she met her gaze. She was mesmerized by her intense stare, and she found herself unable to look away. Max's eyes were a deep shade of blue, and they seemed to hold some sort of magnetic power over her.
As Max continued to look at her, Josie felt a rush of emotions flood through her body. She felt a mix of excitement, nervousness, and confusion. She wasn't sure what Max was thinking, but she knew that she couldn't stop thinking about her. Her mind was filled with questions about what Max was gonna think. Josie knew Lucas told Max the truth.
Josie tried to shake off her feelings and focus on the conversation ahead, but she found herself constantly stealing glances at Max. The magnetic pull remained, making it difficult for Josie to resist the allure. Knowing she needed to explain why she hadn't told Max the truth, Josie navigated the internal conflict.
"Who's that?" Steve asked. "Max," Josie breathed out, her lips curling into a grin. Max crossed her arms, walking towards her.
AS JOSIE WANDERED AROUND THE JUNKYARD. Josie felt a firm grip on her arm, pulling her to the side. It was Max, and her voice held a tinge of anger as she questioned, "Why didn't you tell me the truth about the Upside Down and El? You only told me about your powers and nothing else." The weight of Max's accusation hung in the air, the unspoken tension thickening with each passing moment.
Josie felt a wave of guilt wash over her. She knew she should have told Max everything from the beginning, but fear of pushing her away had held her back. A promise to Mike weighed on her, binding her to silence. "I'm sorry," Josie mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't know how to tell you." Her eyes met Max's with an apologetic look.
Max's face softened slightly, a hint of understanding in her eyes. "I understand that you were scared," she crossed her arms. "But you have to trust me. I'm your friend, and I want to help you," she reassured Josie. The exchange carried a sense of vulnerability and reassurance.
As they continued to talk, the atmosphere shifted. They began picking up old parts in the junkyard, working side by side. Josie felt a calming presence beside Max, a shared purpose in salvaging pieces of the past. Despite the initial tension, a renewed sense of connection emerged.
"I'm sorry," Josie said again, looking up at Max. "I should have told you everything from the beginning." The sincerity in her words conveyed a commitment to honesty, and the unspoken weight of withheld truths began to lift, allowing room for understanding and resolution.
Josie looked down at the ground, feeling a sense of shame wash over her. "I should have told you everything from the beginning," she frowned, her voice barely above a whisper.
Max reached out and put a hand on Josie's shoulder. "It's okay... We all make mistakes. The important thing is that you're telling me now," Max reassured her, nodding with a small smile playing at the corners of her lips.
"Apology accepted," Max added, her tone firm. "But you have to promise me that you'll never keep anything from me again," she insisted, pointing at Josie with a raised eyebrow.
Josie nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She understood that building full trust with Max would take time, but she was willing to try. Together, they worked to pick up the old parts, their conversation gradually shifting to other topics. Josie felt a growing sense of hope as she realized she had made a true friend in Max, and the shared experience in the junkyard became a turning point in their evolving friendship.
JOSIE SAT ON THE TOP OF THE ABANDONED BUS. Josie looked through the binoculars closely, focused on the lookout for any demo-dogs. "Mind if I join you?" Max climbed up the ladder. Josie popped her head around, her lips curled into a grin. "No! Go ahead," she nodded, waving her hand to gesture for Max to sit beside her.
Max chuckled, her eyes fixed on the fog-draped landscape. "It's kinda awesome," she spoke up, drawing Josie's attention. Confused, Josie furrowed her eyebrows. "Huh?"
"The fog, I mean," Max clarified, her gaze lingering on the mist. "Looks like the ocean," she added, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. Max's eyes seemed to travel beyond the junkyard, as if transported back to California.
"You... miss California?" Josie inquired, sensing a layer of sentiment beneath Max's observation.
"What?"
"Ocean, waves," Josie shrugged, understanding Max's sentiment. Max nodded, and then Josie posed a question, "Yeah, you miss Mexico?"
Josie nodded in response. "I miss... Charlotte. She's my friend. Lab friend. Been friends since... para siempre," she exhaled, a wistful expression on her face. A missing piece in her heart became palpable. Charlotte's understanding, rooted in shared powers and experiences, created a profound connection that Josie longed for.

"I'm sorry, Josie," Max gave her a sympathetic look. "Being away from a friend is never easy," she frowned, her lips expressing understanding. Max could see the sadness in Josie's eyes, sensing the depth of her pain. She wanted to help Josie in any way she could, but she also knew that sometimes, all you could do was be there for someone.
"Charlotte sounds like she was a great friend," Max tilted her head, a touch of curiosity in her eyes. "But you know what? You have me now. And I promise I'll always be here for you," she reassured Josie with sincerity.
Josie's grin widened. "Thank you. Char might come next summer; she will like you."
Max smiled back at Josie. "I'd love to meet her... And who knows? Maybe we'll all become great friends," she giggled.
Max felt a sense of warmth spread through her chest as she looked at Josie. She knew that they had a lot in common and that they could become great friends. "You like Hawkins? It seems lame. I dunno how to feel. Though, I've been here longer than you," Josie questioned Max, her thick Spanish accent being noticeable.
Max shrugged. "It's not lame... It's just..." She paused, a sadness clouding her expression, prompting Josie to scoot closer to her. "My dad's still there. So..." She trailed off.
"Why?" Josie asked, her voice gentle, as Max responded with a sarcastic smile. "It's this legal term called 'divorce.' See, when two married people don't love each other anymoreโ"
"Divorciaron?" Josie asked as Max nodded reluctantly. "I guess... My mom and my stepdad, they wanted a fresh start away from him. As if... As if he was the problem, which is total bull. And things..." Max began opening up to her, and Josie stared at her, making it clear she was listening.
TRANSLATION; divorced
Max continued. "...are just worse now. My stepbrother's always been a dick, but now he's just angry... all the time and..." She closed her mouth shut, clenching her jaw, trying to hold back the tears.
Josie sensed the emotional weight behind Max's words, offering her a comforting presence without the need for more explanations. Sometimes, just being there and sharing the silent moments could mean more than words.
Josie's eyebrows knitted together. She relaxed her shoulders, allowing Max the time and space to explain. "Well, he can't take it out on my mom, so..." She trailed off, looking to her right and avoiding eye contact with Josie.
"He takes out on you?" Josie gasped.
Max's eyes were filled with tears. "I don't even know why I'm telling you this," she shook her head. Despite Josie's inclination to make a flirty remark, she sensed that Max had more to say. "It's just... I know I can be a jerk like him sometimes, and I do not want to be like him. Ever," she stated. "I guess I'm angry too, and... I'm sorry."
Max sniffled. "Jesus! What's wrong with me?" she exclaimed.
Josie chuckled. "Well, sunshine, you are not. You've been around him. A lot. Not saying you are, just saying, anger's been built up in you. Need to let it out. Which you did. Telling me. Trusting me. You're amazing. Smart. Different than other girls I've met."
Max chuckled. "Darling, you bring out the best in me," she commented as Josie leaned closer to her. The atmosphere was filled with a mixture of vulnerability and newfound comfort. "I like talking with you, Mad Max," Josie commented back, her tone carrying a hint of affection. Max's cheeks turned a scarlet red, a subtle sign of the impact Josie's words had on her. "And I like talking with you, Fierce Josie," she admitted, her gaze meeting Josie's with genuine sincerity.
MAX AND JOSIE STILL SAT ON THE ROOFTOP OF THE BUS, staring up at the stars. They had been talking for hours, and Max couldn't help but feel a growing sense of affection for Josie. She had never felt this way before, and it was both exhilarating and terrifying. Josie turned to look at Max, and Max felt her heart skip a beat. "You know," Josie said softly. "I've always felt a connection with you. Like we were meant... to meet." She admitted, turning her head to look at Max.
Max's eyes met Josie's, and for a brief moment, the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in that quiet, fog-filled moment.
Max felt a shiver run down her spine. "I feel the same way," she whispered, flickering her eyes down to Josie's lips.
Josie leaned in closer to Max, and Max could feel her breath on her cheek. "There's something I need to tell you," Josie stared into Max's eyes. "I like you. A lot."
Max's heart skipped a beat. She had suspected that Josie might feel the same way, but hearing her say it out loud was still a shock. "I like you too," she admitted, her voice tinged with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
Josie gently grasped Max's hand, intertwining their fingers. "With you, I feel truly myself... I've never felt this way with anyone before."
Max felt a comforting warmth spread across her chest, a sensation that made her feel understood and cherished. "Being with you allows me to be my true self. I feel like I can share anything with you without hesitation," she said, her voice soft yet resolute.
Pausing for a moment, she chuckled lightly, a hint of uncertainty in her eyes. "Is there a reason we shouldn't feel this way?"
Josie took a deep breath, feeling a mix of vulnerability and hope. She was aware of the prejudices that existed against same-sex couples, and while she personally felt undeterred by them, she couldn't help but wonder about Max's perspective on the matter.
Max winked, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Who says anyone has to know? Let them judge; it doesn't affect us." A smile slowly formed on Josie's lips, her heart swelling with a sense of relief and affection. "You're right," she whispered, leaning closer.
As their lips met, Max's heart raced, each beat echoing the intensity of the moment. The sensation of Josie's lips against hers was transformative, a warmth and connection she had never felt with anyone else. Time seemed to stand still, and in that instant, all that mattered was the two of them, lost in a profound embrace.
Before their lips could meet, Lucas's voice pierced the moment from inside the bus. "It's here!" The urgency in his tone snapped Max and Josie back to reality, their hearts pounding with a mix of anticipation and interruption.
Though intrigued by Lucas's announcement, a shared understanding passed between them. They would soon delve into whatever awaited them, but the unresolved tension between them was palpable. With a knowing glance and a promise lingering in the air, they both acknowledged silently that their intimate moment would resume as soon as circumstances allowed.
Sitting up abruptly, Josie's ears caught the unsettling growls echoing around them. "Looks like it's my turn to step in," she declared, determination evident in her voice.
Dustin's alarmed shout pierced the tension. "Josie, what's happening?" he called out, his eyes scanning the surroundings in confusion.
Without hesitation, Josie's gaze sharpened, scanning the area with intent. As the dust settled, her eyes locked onto the menacing form of a Demo-dog lurking nearby. "There it is!" she announced, ready to confront the threat head-on.
As they observed, the anticipation building, Max adjusted the binoculars for a clearer view before glancing skeptically at Josie. "You're certain that's not just some mutated dog?" she questioned, still grappling with the surreal concept of the Upside Down.
Raising an eyebrow, Josie met Max's gaze with unwavering conviction. "It as real as my power," she asserted, her tone leaving no room for doubt. With a firm nod, Josie refocused her attention, scrutinizing the Demo-dog intently, ready for whatever came next.
Catching sight of Steve venturing into the junkyard wielding his bat, Josie's eyes widened in surprise and concern. "What he thinking, going down there without me?" she muttered, her focus torn between the unfolding situation with Steve and the ominous snarls resonating from the distance, signaling the lurking danger nearby.
With a steely gaze, Josie's eyes shifted to a haunting red hue, an unmistakable sign of her telekinetic powers at play. Effortlessly, she levitated off the ground, descending gracefully onto the hood of an old car, her palms radiating an ominous red energy.
Steve, catching her eye, wore a look of genuine concern, his voice tinged with worry. "I'm not sure this is the place for you," he cautioned, his tone heavy with the weight of the looming threat. "These creatures aren't something to underestimate."
"I've got this," Josie replied, her eyes reflecting a determined resolve as she locked gazes with Steve. Recognizing her unwavering determination, Steve exhaled a resigned sigh, tightening his grip on his bat studded with nails. "Just promise me you'll watch your back," he urged, a hint of apprehension evident in his voice.
Navigating cautiously through the maze of debris, Steve and Josie maintained proximity, each step echoing with a sense of anticipation. Steve's whistle pierced the eerie silence, a calculated attempt to lure out the Demo-dogs lurking in the shadows.
As expected, a Demo-dog emerged, its menacing snarl directed at Steve. Without warning, another creature lunged from behind Josie. Swiftly pivoting to confront the threat, Josie squared her shoulders, ready to defend herself against the menacing creature.
As the Demo-dogs charged, Steve's bat connected with brutal precision, striking one squarely in the head. At the same moment, Josie extended her hands, harnessing her telekinetic abilities to levitate the second creature off the ground before hurling it forcefully across the junkyard.
Just as Josie began to cautiously navigate the area, primed for another potential encounter, the piercing sound of Max's scream echoed through the air. Recognizing the ominous sign that more Demo-dogs would soon converge on their location, Josie knew time was of the essence, compelling her to spring into action swiftly.
With determination flooding her senses, Josie's concentration intensified. The sensation of energy pulsating within her became palpable as she lifted off the ground, soaring effortlessly through the air above the chaotic junkyard. Her heart pounded with urgency, each beat echoing Max's desperate cries for help.
Closing in on the bus, Josie's eyes widened at the sight that greeted her: a Demo-dog perched menacingly atop the vehicle, its snarls reverberating menacingly. Inside, Max's panicked screams heightened the stakes, propelling Josie into immediate action to confront the imminent threat and ensure Max's safety.
With swift precision, Josie landed atop the bus, her eyes locked onto the threatening Demo-dog. Extending her hands, she channeled her telekinetic power, forcefully pushing the creature off the bus. It hit the ground with a resounding thud, momentarily subdued.
However, the creature's resilience was evident as it swiftly regained its footing, its primal instincts driving it to lunge ferociously at Josie, escalating the perilous confrontation.
Drawing upon her formidable abilities, Josie summoned a protective shield of energy around herself and Max, creating a barrier that thwarted the oncoming onslaught from the Demo-dog. Harnessing her chlorokinetic powers, she manipulated the surrounding plant life, commanding them to ensnare the creature.
Vines and foliage responded to her command, snaking their way around the Demo-dog, constricting tightly and immobilizing it. Through a masterful blend of energy manipulation and control over nature, Josie effectively neutralized the immediate threat, ensuring their safety amidst the chaos.
With determination set in her eyes, Josie recognized the need to neutralize the creature definitively. Channeling her weather manipulation abilities, she summoned a tempestuous storm overhead, lightning crackling and striking the Demo-dog with precision, sapping its strength with each electrifying bolt.
As the creature finally succumbed and collapsed, Josie exhaled deeply, relief washing over her. Turning her attention to Max, she approached with a reassuring smile. "Are you alright?" she inquired softly.
Tears glistening in her eyes, Max nodded, overwhelmed with emotion. "Thank you, Josie," she whispered, her voice quivering with the residual fear of the harrowing ordeal. "For saving me." The weight of gratitude and vulnerability hung in the air, underscoring the bond between them forged amidst adversity.
Josie just smiled, knowing that she had done what she had to do to protect her friend. She lifted herself up off the bus, hovering in the air. "I alway be here to protect you," she said, before flying off of the bus.
Inside the bus, Steve maintained a vigilant watch, recognizing Josie's capability to fend for herself. His grip tightened around his trusty bat, ready to defend the others at a moment's notice.
However, as the skirmish escalated, the appearance of additional Demo-dogs heightened the tension. Spotting one advancing menacingly toward Max, Josie reacted instantly. With a swift gesture, she summoned a protective shield of energy around both herself and Max, creating an impenetrable barrier that deflected the creature's aggressive advances.
Amidst the chaos, Josie's unwavering resolve and adept use of her powers became their stronghold, ensuring their safety amidst the relentless onslaught of threats.
Harnessing her chlorokinetic abilities, Josie commanded the surrounding vegetation to entangle and immobilize the encroaching Demo-dogs, effectively restraining their movements. Amplifying her assault, she conjured a tempestuous storm overhead, bolts of lightning cascading down upon the creatures, sapping their strength and resolve.
As some of the Demo-dogs diverted their attention toward the bus, Josie pivoted her focus to defend the vulnerable occupants. Yet, whenever these creatures approached, Steve proved to be a formidable line of defense. With his bat in hand, studded with nails, he met the advancing foes head-on, swiftly neutralizing them with lethal precision, ensuring the safety of those aboard the bus.
As the last of the Demo-dogs retreated, a wave of relief washed over Josie, her tension dissipating. She shot Steve a triumphant smile, arms crossed confidently. "See? Told you I could handle myself."
Steve chuckled, shaking his head in admiration, eyebrows raised in acknowledgment. "You certainly did," he conceded with a grin. However, his expression quickly shifted to one of stern resolve. "But that doesn't mean I'm keen on letting you dive into any more perilous missions," he asserted, his protective instincts fully ignited.
With a light-hearted laugh, Josie recognized Steve's protective nature, fully aware that his efforts to shield her would ultimately prove futile. As they navigated their way back to their base, a rush of exhilaration surged within Josie, the adrenaline still coursing through her veins.
Despite the inherent dangers that loomed over them, Josie found solace in the conviction that their endeavors were making a tangible difference. The satisfaction of leveraging her powers for the greater good fueled her determination, underscoring her unwavering commitment to their cause, no matter the risks involved.
Steve's tone shifted, his concern palpable as he locked eyes with Josie. "I understand your drive to help others," he began earnestly, raising his voice to ensure she grasped the gravity of his words. "But I'm genuinely concerned about the toll it's taking on you. Your powers, as remarkable as they are, are wearing you down, and I can't bear to see you hurt," he admitted, his protective instincts and genuine care for Josie surfacing prominently.
With a heavy sigh, Josie conceded to the truth in Steve's words. The weight of her recent exertions pressed upon her; she had been stretching herself thin, harnessing her powers relentlessly to aid those in distress.
Yet, the very essence of her being rebelled against the notion of idly standing by when she possessed the means to enact positive change. The internal struggle between self-preservation and unwavering resolve to make a difference cast a shadow of uncertainty over her next steps.
Steve nodded, understanding the depth of Josie's conviction. "I get it, Josie," he replied, meeting her knowing gaze with a mixture of admiration and concern. "Just promise me you'll find a balance. Your well-being matters too," he urged, emphasizing the importance of harmonizing her desire to help others with the necessity of preserving herself.
Josie's lips curved into a gentle smile, comforted by Steve's consistent presence and protective demeanor as they ventured further into the dense woods. Every step they took reinforced her gratitude for the unwavering friendship they shared, a bond she knew she could count on in any circumstance.
As they moved along, the rhythmic thud of footsteps approached, and soon Max jogged up to Josie's side. Their eyes met, and Max offered a nod of approval, saying, "You did well." A warm smile spread across Josie's face in response, appreciating Max's acknowledgment.
However, just as Josie was about to voice her gratitude, an overwhelming dizziness consumed her. Her vision blurred, and a wave of darkness swept over her. In a swift, alarming moment, her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed to the ground, limp and unconscious. Hearing the thud, Max's eyes widened in shock and horror. "JOSIE!" she cried out, her voice echoing through the silent woods in a frantic plea.
