JOSEFINA CORTEZ moved to Hawkins from Mexico. Her mom wanted to get away from the drama. Estefina found out when Josefina was seven years old, her powers started showing. No one knows how exactly she got the gene. The doctors never told them that Josie had a genetic mutation.
Estefina guessed maybe it was possible because her late husband, Hector, was in Agent Orange. So, it might've been why.

Josefina worked aside Dr. Russo and she safely went through trials to learn how to use her superpowers. Dr. Russo was a caring doctor and made sure that everything went okay with her. Estefina loves her and thought she was a good role model for Josefina for maybe one day her daughter would like to become a doctor.

Things begin to change in 1983. Dr. Russo got fired when she slapped a doctor for trying to get with her while she was pregnant and she had a loving husband. So, a new doctor came in and tried to take kids to his lab. Dr. Owens. Only one parent went through with it. That was Josefina's mom. Estefina liked him, trust him, so she packed their things and moved to Hawkins.

Josefina hated that she had to start a new school. That meant she was leaving her long term best friend, Charlotte Becker. They grew up together. They both had superpowers. Charlotte only had one power unlike Josefina. Charlotte controlled snow and ice. It was really cool and Josefina was jealous of her. Of course, Josefina could make it snow, but she couldn't blast snowballs from her palms like her best friend could.

Josefina was having a hard time settling in Hawkins. She didn't know much English, so she had trouble speaking it. Her first language was Spanish. Actually, she understood what Americans were saying. . . She just didn't know how to speak English. Which is why, she was put in low class levels and has to do speech impediment classes and get tested every once awhile to see where she was at with her English.

Josefina befriends Will, Lucas, Mike and Dustin when she meets her at the arcade after her mother forced her to go and make new friends. Mike didn't like her that much at first, but he began to like her when she started making him laugh by making herself trip over her own feet. These new friends helped her learn English. . . Soon enough, she learned about El and she told them she was like them.

Of course, Mike asked if she knew her. She did not. She went to a different lab that was way different than Hawkins Lab. . . But Josefina never told them that she was going there to practice her powers.

Josefina went to Hawkins Lab once a month to get evaluated on her power level and how well she is doing. But after that summer, she didn't need to go anymore, but if her mom ever suspected something was wrong, she brought her straight there to check on her and make sure she's okay.

She never understood why her mom got scared and worried whenever she wasn't feeling well.

Overall, Josefina missed her best friend. Her new friends wasn't gonna be able to replace her. She always called Charlotte whenever she could or she would call Josefina whenever she could.

Her mom, Estefina became Jim Hoppers partner in crime. Josefina could tell the romantic tension between them.

When a redhead girl that goes by Max moves to town, she catches Josefina's eyes. But how could she like a girl? That was Not Allowed. . . Right?
