IT WAS AROUND 10PM, the parents had moved to the kitchen island to catch up on their 'adult things', their words, not linnea's.

she was still next to ollie on the couch, koda's head in her lap. they were still watching some christmas movie lisa had put on. linnea wasn't really paying attention, absentmindedly picking at her nail beds. she had been overthinking again.

school's gonna mess me up after break, i'm so behind.

ollie is definitely just being nice, he doesn't want anything to do with me. i mean we haven't spoken in like two hours???

"stop that." ollie softly whispered to her and snapped her out of her state, she looked at him and dropped her hands. "sorry." linnea quickly whispered back. "what's wrong?" he said in a hushed voice once more, wanting to avoid drawing the attention of their siblings.

"nothing really, just zoned out." she quickly answered, but ollie wasn't having it. "i don't wanna pressure you but i wanna help." he insisted.

linnea had caved quicker then she thought she would, "okay," she'd whispered. "but not here." she continued. "we could just say we're taking koda for a late night walk." ollie suggested. "right." she smiled at him.

"koda!" she made her voice a few notches higher, the dogs' head shot up excitedly. linnea stood up as she riled him up, "you wanna go for a walk?!" koda immediately jumped off the couch, tail wagging wildly.

ollie now also raised himself off the couch, "me and ollie are gonna take koda and walk for a bit!" linnea shouted through the house as she walked to the hall where the front door was. "be back before midnight!" she heard her fathers voice. "you got it big dog!" linnea shouted once more.

the pair walked into the hall, putting on their coats and boots, also some beanies and gloves. linnea put koda's collar on and clipped the leash to it. she grabbed the keys from the self-proclaimed key bowl and opened the door, the freezing cold air immediately hitting her face.

"it's not gonna be a long walk, koda's feet can't take cold like this for too long." she told the boy, "that's fine nea, just say what you want to tell me and we'll go back after." ollie said.

"i don't know where to start, i think i'm just gonna yap a lot and it won't make sense at all." linnea said as they began to make their way down the side walk. "just say what comes to mind when i ask what's wrong." ollie told her softly as he took a glance at her face.

"well i've been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, i worry too much. i overthink everything and picking my nail beds is like a side effect, kinda? i just need to fiddle with something when i'm overthinking and my nail beds are an innocent victim, i fear. sorry, i'm yapping now." linnea rambled.

"don't apologize! i asked you to explain. and i'm sorry nea, that sucks. i'm not really good at this but just know i'm always open to listen. believe it or not, i do still care for you a lot." ollie stated, linnea was a little shocked at the last statement. she started smiling, "i'll trust you on that." she replied.

with the conformation that he still cared, linnea felt brave. she stopped dead in her tracks, ollie and koda immediately halting too. the boy looked at her, waiting for her to say something.

"i missed you, ollie." it came out in a soft voice, as she looked down. ollie smiled, stepping closer to her. "i missed you more, nea." he said sweetly, opening his arms for her. she immediately reacted as she stepped into the embrace as if it hadn't been years.

"that was so cringe." linnea couldn't help but say, chuckling. "shut up nea, we're having a moment." ollie shushed her, putting his right hand on her head, smushing her face into his shoulder. but ollie couldn't hold in his snort, letting go of the girl. "DID YOU JUST SNORT??!!" she laughed.

they laughed together until koda tugged on the leash harshly, sending linnea (what could've easily been) flying. koda heard the girls 'umfph' and immediately turned around and ran to his owner. ollie was unsure if she was laughing or crying at first, as he stayed quiet, holding in a laugh.

as koda started licking to girls face, it became clear the sounds linnea made had been giggles, ollie also let out his laugh. "YOU FLEW!" he wheezed, pointing at linnea's giggling figure, still laying on the snow covered side walk.

"STOP. i'm gonna poison your breakfast tomorrow." linnea's face turned dead serious, ollie stopped laughing and gasped, "you wouldn't dare." he frowned, playing into the joke. "i will if you don't help me up." she said as she stuck out her hand for him to grab.

ollie helped her off the ground as koda started circling her legs. the girl pet the dogs head affectionately, "who just threw their owner on the pavement??? you did! you did!!!" she told koda, putting on a baby voice. ollie chuckled at her behavior.

"we should go back." linnea stated, as koda finally did his business on the snow next to the sidewalk. "i'm literally freezing my balls off thanks to this one." she averted her gave to the dog, who had trotted back to her side. "don't know if you know but... you don't have those." ollie stated dramatically.

"nooooo really???" linnea said, acting shocked. "sorry to burst your bubble..." ollie sighed, they both let out little laughs. "we really should go though." linnea reminded. "yeah, sure." the boy smiled.

as they walked back, they conversed more. getting back to the evermore estate, linnea slowed the walking pace and spoke, "i really appreciate you doing this for me, so thank you." she spoke, ollie stopped her, placing both his hands on each of her shoulders. he looked at her with a smile, "you don't have to thank me nea, i actually do have to make up for the years we've not seen each other." he stated. "so do i. so thanks, ollie."

linnea and ollie got back inside about an hour ago and immediately changed into more comfortable clothes. it was now 11:30pm and lisa and charlotte had moved into lisa's room to do god knows what. thomas had fallen asleep on the other couch, snoring lightly. ollie had already taken a few 0.5 pictures of his little brother snoozing. he was giggling with linnea as he showed her the pictures.

belle poked her head around the arch, looking into the living room, watching her daughter and the boy, huddled together on the couch, sharing a blanket, while laughing quietly. the older woman smiled to herself and pulled out her phone to take a few pictures of the adorable moment, quickly sending them to the group chat she shared with her husband, terri and david.

"lin, sweetheart!" belle called out. linnea looked at her mother, "what's up?" she asked. "we kinda forgot to mention, the bearmans are sleeping here. we thought you wouldn't mind sharing with ollie again, otherwise he has to sleep on the couch." her mother told them.

linnea looked at ollie, asking him silently if he was comfortable with the sleeping arrangement. "i don't mind." ollie stated, nodding at belle. "perfect," belle began turning around before stopping and turning back to the kids, "by the way, we made some hot chocolate. it's in the kitchen if you want some." she smiled and now fully retreated to the kitchen.

"you want to get some and then go to my room?" linnea asked the brunette boy, "yeah, sure" ollie replied, as he threw the blanket off of them. he stood up and held his hand out for linnea to grab, she did so, the boy hoisting her off the couch.

both of the teens didn't notice they hadn't let go of each others hands while they walked towards the kitchen, it felt so natural and routinely. the parents watched the kids walk in, hand in hand, and for a second, it felt like it was still 2013. they had all smiled at each other knowingly, the teens not noticing the glances their parents shared.

once they were at the counter, they let go of each other as linnea opened the cabinet to get some mugs. she stood on her tippy toes, but still couldn't reach. she groaned as oliver laughed, "let me-"

"NO." linnea interrupted, holding a finger up to his face, "watch me bro." she continued. oliver held his hands up in defense. "at least, let me film it." the boy had said while pulling out his phone. "sure," she said as she waited for him to start filming, and he did so.

"hi, i'm linnea and this, is jackass." she laughed at herself before climbing on the counter and grabbing two mugs from the cabinet. she put them down on the counter before trying to slide off gracefully.

she did not go gracefully.

her squeal could be heard through out the house as linnea lost her balance and almost ate shit, she caught herself before she could meet the marble floor. the girl looked up to ollie, who was still filming. "i almost died right there." she panted, starting to laugh.

"lin, what the hell was that?!" her dad had called out, laughing loudly and pointing at his daughter. "that was planned, i wanted to test you. and guess what?? YOU FAILED." linnea told her dad, sticking her tongue out.

oliver had smiled at the interaction, before starting to pour the hot chocolate into the mugs. once linnea and ollie both had their mugs they bid goodnight to their parents before going upstairs and entering the girls room.

it had changed since ollie had last seen it, of course it did, it's been 10 years since you were here. the boy reminded himself. "it's different, i like it." he complimented. "thank you, loser." she smiled, putting her hot chocolate on her nightstand before falling into her bed.

ollie gasped at her insult dramatically, "i'll have you know, i won four races last season!! i'm not a loser!" he cried out fakely. he also put down his mug and joined her on the other side of the queen sized bed. "ur such a weirdo." linnea smiled, turning on the tv that hung on the wall of her room. "cars?" she suggested, the boy nodding with a smile.

before the movie had ended, the two teens were fast asleep. as richard came in to check on the two, he smiled at the sight.

ollie was laying behind his daughter, his head in the crook of her neck. richard couldn't see much more because of the blanket laying over the pair.

rick did his duty (taking a picture of the kids) and sending it to his fellow soldiers (his wife and the boys parents), he turned off the lights, closed the door again and left the teens to sleep.
