        ELIZABETH 'BESS' SINCLAIR WAS A child pulled into the world of sin too early. Her mother was a woman working in Intelligence until it got her killed, her father was a man dealing with money and he was still breathing. He chose better. Money kept you alive. Money got you power. Intelligence made you an asset until they put a target on your back, and then you became the lamb they served at dinner. No loose ends.

        BESS WAS A SMART WOMAN. More than smart, actually. She was blessed with a memory that could never forget, being both a curse and a gift all at once. It got certain people's attention. The higher-ups'. The decision makers'. And with her father's money, the path was clear as day. She got into the CIA with top marks, and pretty soon they let her into the inner circle. The carefully guarded vault in the castle's dungeon. Once you're in, there's no way out. At least, not alive.

        NOW THERE WAS A NEW job at a place called the Behavioral Analysis Unit in the FBI, and they chose Bess. It was rotten, it was wrong, it was crazy, and they thought she was the one to do it right. The playbook was the same as always. No one could find out. It felt impossible when she lay in his arms after they both broke like a thousand rules, and it made her start doubting herself.
