destiny and jordan are sat across from one another on the loveseat in her living room, destiny leant forward enough for their hands to meet in the middle. their backs face the arms of the small couch, and she's messing with his fingers as jersey shore plays in the background—her comfort show that he's starting to get used to her watching around him.
she's moreso focused on jordan than the show, listening to him ramble about some funny thing that happened to him and his friends. a content smile rests on her lips as he talks and talks, and she offers nods of support throughout it. she feels at peace with him, like for a moment, she can forget about everything bothering her by just focusing on him instead.
that is, until the front door opens.
jordan cuts his sentence halfway off, their heads both turning at the sound.
destiny is fine when nate walks in, predicting him to just go to his room. she's then also fine when adora and ruben follow behind him. she assumes they decided to come hang out for a bit after school, since that was her and jordan's entire thought process; they just got here first. she's even fine when matt and nick also come inside. she isn't upset with them in the slightest, just their brother.
destiny is completely fine up until chris is revealed at the very end, being the last person to step foot inside. destiny's face falls as the door is closed behind him, jordan's hands suddenly feeling ten times heavier in her hold.
"heyyyy," ruben's voice is the first to meet her ears, his face saying that he already knows what she is thinking as he enters the room chuckling nervously with adora. destiny purses her lips, already trying to shove the overbearing questions of why they would think whatever this is, is a good idea, back. "we were bored and nate suggested the triplets should come over, sooo we tagged along too," he explains.
"just to play mario kart," adora specifies further at the look on destiny's face. "no biggie."
"no biggie," destiny repeats, her skeptical eyes finally wandering to nate who's walked into the living room. she feels anger spike within her at the nonchalance written all over his face when thanks to him, she can feel chris' presence in the room. "thanks for the fyi, nate," she pettily remarks before she can help herself.
his eyebrows quickly shoot to his forehead, and nick and matt shoot each other a glance as chris is cowered further behind them. a few seconds of silence pass in which destiny's hands find themself leaving jordan's, until nate ultimately blows a breath from his lips. "can we talk real quick?" he catches her off guard, her jaw ticking with annoyance when he gestures to the kitchen with a directed tilt of his head.
"sure," she mutters under her breath, standing up from her seat and sending a tight-lipped smile jordan's way. he nods his head to reassure her that she's fine before she turns around, and then the wind is momentarily knocked out of her because her eyes accidentally land on chris instead of nate. he's the furthest back in the room, off to the side of matt and chris, and his eyebrows are scrunched together slightly as he seems more focused on her and jordan's interactions than her and nate's. he doesn't flinch at the sudden eye contact as his eyes were seemingly already on her, the only movement he offers being the crossing of his arms. she clears her throat and forces her eyes to nate before finally turning in the direction of the kitchen.
she hears nate following her until she's behind the island counter, so she spins around to face him. she's then quick to ask, "why didn't you tell me everyone was coming?"
nate is thrown off by the question, his voice full of frustration when he responds with a question himself, "why does it matter?"
destiny immediately scoffs, looking at him in disbelief. "oh, i don't know, maybe because you're the one who wants me to stay away from chris," she points out, sarcasm laced within her voice.
nate's eyes first narrow in response, his verbal reply taking a moment before he seems to internally come up with an answer for himself. "so this is what you're so pissed at me over," he says like it's a fact, just getting this from what she's said to him so far.
"what?" destiny says, eyebrows furrowed beyond belief as irritation automatically fills her. "i'm not even pissed at you," she tries to say, although her current behavior isn't helping her any.
"yeah, okay," nate almost laughs at her obvious lie, her tone of voice being enough contradiction to that. he crosses his arms over his chest before defending himself by telling her, "i didn't even tell you to stay away from him. i just don't want you dating him."
destiny instantly has to resist from rolling her eyes. sure, she first had no plans in actually staying away from chris because nate said anything, and only did that on her own terms because he eventually ruined everything himself, but it started with nate, so it's all practically the same. "okay well, you can stop saying that, because i'm obviously not going to!" she says exasperatedly, throwing her arms out in frustration.
"it just didn't seem like you thought that way before," he shrugs, causing her mouth to quickly shut. he sighs at the unimpressed look on her face, and attempts a different approach, "look, i just wish you'd look at things from my perspective, and realize i don't want to see you hurt."
it's kind of far too late for that, destiny thinks. she sucks in a breath and tries to understand. "okay, and i get that," she starts, "but if you look at things from my perspective, you'll see i'm just annoyed you think you get some control over my dating life."
there are a few beats of silence that pass in which nate doesn't say anything, until he finally responds, "but i do." destiny's jaw immediately drops and nate looks at her like she's the insane one. "i'm your brother," he states. she blinks at him.
"that's not what that means," she sternly tells him with a narrowing of her eyes.
nate literally laughs. "uh, yeah it is," he replies without care, causing destiny to silently grow more offended until he finally sighs, "does it even matter now? i like jordan."
destiny falls silent as he makes a surprisingly good point. she's not sure exactly why, but she begins to frown. "i.. guess not," she eventually agrees, shrugging her shoulders and hoping her mind will catch the memo to calm down. it's time to forget about chris.
"good. are you done being pissed at me now?" nate's quick to let go of the topic, moving on with an especially cheesy smile to piss her off. destiny sighs loudly, but now lightheartedly. "your attempts at death glares are so pathetic and i've been waiting to tell you that all week."
"oh my god, shut up." destiny playfully rolls her eyes, leaning forward to lightly shove him back. "go away and we'll be cool."
"sure, nerd," he laughs, stepping back and beginning to head out of the room. he lingers at the doorway though, and turns back to look at her. "hey, are we good to turn off your show, by the way? because we need the tv for mario kart."
she rolls her eyes again. "sure," she answers, successfully shooing him in the process.
she watches him disappear into the living room and doesn't get any time left by herself before jordan suddenly appears in his place. he comes in through the doorway nate walks out of, destiny plastering a smile on her face when he approaches her behind the island counter. "everything good?" he first asks, giving destiny a warm feeling in her chest before she nods. "what was all that about?"
"oh nothing," she tries to shrug it off with nonchalance, quickly moving on when she continues by apologizing, "sorry everyone just kind of showed up, by the way. i didn't know they were coming."
"it's no sweat. i kind of figured," he lets it go with ease. he then takes a quick glance around, his mind wandering to what the pantry might contain. "i'm kind of hungry now that i'm here, i can't lie."
destiny laughs at how random his words are, weirdly feeling the same. "me too actually," she agrees, making him grin as she ponders on what she could make. her eyes focus on the doorway as she thinks, coming up with what sounds the most appealing. "i'll probably just make.." she begins trailing off when of course—like seriously, of course—chris appears in the doorway. her expression falters as he heads this way, feelings she can't decipher present on his face as he gets closer. she wonders what on earth he's thinking coming in here with her and jordan when with the way they've been acting at school recently, she thought they were both perfectly set on avoiding any interactions with each other. she takes in a sharp breath and looks back to jordan, trying to ignore chris' incoming presence despite her new hyperawareness of his ability to hear her. "i'm just gonna, uh, have cereal."
jordan nods his head, only taking his eyes off of her when the fridge door makes a noise due to being opened. he turns his head to find chris now in the kitchen, apparently trying to grab a drink. destiny internally curses over how awkward this is as they're both aware of his presence. jordan proves to be a nice guy though, when he looks back to her and attempts to not act any different. "yeah? that sounds-"
"jordan!" a shout comes from the living room, making the two both furrow their eyebrows. all three heads in the kitchen turn in the direction of the call just as matt comes speedily walking into the kitchen. he stands at the doorway, leaning in and scanning over each of them until his eyes finally land on jordan. "we need you for mario kart, bro," he simply tells him.
destiny resists from screaming 'PLEASE NO' at the thought of being left alone in the kitchen with chris, and silently hopes that jordan will just tell matt no when he sucks in a breath and looks back to her.
"well, i guess that's my cue," jordan says, destiny hoping the way her face immediately drops isn't too visibly drastic. it feels like the walls are caving in suddenly though, as jordan leans forward to plant a quick kiss to her cheek before his departure. "i'll be in the living room."
destiny forces a smile when he pulls away, it only souring for a brief moment in which she makes the mistake of glancing at chris no longer in front of the fridge, but the pantry. he has an unreadable expression on his face, so she quickly snaps her line of vision back to jordan in front of her. "okay," she nods, him then turning around to leave.
when jordan reaches matt, the pair turn around to go to the living room and the silence chris and destiny are left in is so loud, that it is almost unbearable to stand in. she keeps her eyes on anything but him—honestly, everything that isn't him—but it doesn't help her any, because when she looks down to the counter in front of her, there's a box of reeces puffs that wasn't there before. her heart sinks at the sight of her favorite cereal—something only chris would know.
she fights the extreme urge to look up at him and face him, as she can literally feel his eyes burning into her, but she continues to just stare at the cereal. an intense frown grows on her face and she eventually forces herself to turn around. she doesn't address chris or his actions at all, just completely ignores him.
she hears the fridge door open for a second time, and it's followed by a soda can opening which destiny knows is a pepsi without turning around. her frown remains persistent as she opens the cabinet containing bowls for a bowl, and then opens a drawer for a spoon.
it's when she turns around—bowl and spoon in hand—that her heart is sent sinking again, now at the sight of a jug of milk sitting on the counter next to the box of cereal. she freezes in place, feeling at war with herself over such a small act.
she takes in a sharp breath and ignores his actions for a second time, simply placing the bowl and spoon down and then reaching for the box. she can feel his eyes on her when the sound of the cereal hitting the bowl is the only noise in the kitchen disregarding their friends in the next room, and she silently wishes that he'd just leave since he already has his drink. she remains silent however, and pretends he is not there.
she thinks she's getting out of this, and that she's going to walk away free of harm when she reaches for the milk. she's congratulating herself for successfully preventing any unwanted interactions with chris, when right as she picks up the now opened jug of milk, he speaks up. his voice is very quiet, laced with fear and a shimmer of vulnerability that causes destiny to freeze up completely.
"i miss you, des," he whispers low, as if it's a confession to be kept secret.
destiny's body tenses at the softness of his voice, hearing sincerity within it and using every atom of her body to keep her eyes focused on the bowl in front of her. she presses her lips together, silently wondering what he gets out of saying things like this to her. does he enjoy putting her through torture?
she silently sets the still opened jug down and grabs the bowl full of dry cereal. she leaves behind the milk, the spoon, and the box as she wordlessly walks out the room without even once looking his way, deeming it not even worth it.
chris' heart beats out of his chest as he's left in the kitchen, his palms on the surface top of the counter as he leans forward to watch destiny walk into the living room. from where he stands, he can see her sit on the couch next to nate—who's already looking this way through the doorway, eyebrows drawn together. chris is momentarily taken aback, watching when nate only breaks to take a glance at destiny after she takes the seat next to him. he's then forced to snap out of it, frowning when he looks down to everything she left behind on the counter.
with a sigh, he reaches for the milk and the cap.
"i don't know, i guess i just miss you, des."
destiny tries to resist the upturn in the corner of her lips from forming, but it truly is uncontrollable as she looks at chris through the phone, him appearing with a hood over his head in front of a desk similar to the one she sits at. "yeah?" she wishes he would say it again.
"yeah," he replies softly, a small smile settling on his lips before it is taken away with his own sigh. "i think nick and matt are sick of me, but i know if you were here, you'd get it."
the forming smile on destiny's face grows as she listens to him talk. once he's finished, she lightly sighs, "sorry i'm not."
chris is instantly shaking his head at her through pixels. "don't apologize, des. you're in the bahamas," he tells her lightheartedly, only remaining serious when he continues with a sigh, "i just don't know how i ever thought she was someone i wanted to be with."
destiny only shrugs, unsure of how to give advice to that as she's never dated anyone before. she's too busy being stuck on the one on the phone. she takes in a breath, and instead asks, "well, who is someone you want to be with?" when chris gives her a strange look, she hopes her cheeks aren't too red. "like what type of person do you want to be with," she tries to specify, making it clearer for him when she adds, "you can't find someone until you know what you're looking for."
"well," she hears him take in a deep breath as he appears to lean back further in his seat. he's silent as he thinks about it at first, and then he begins rambling in a voice soft enough to make destiny smile, "i don't really have a preference when it comes to dating—okay, that's a lie, brunettes, but that's besides the point. i mean, i don't care about who they are, i just want them to like... get it. i don't really know how to describe it, but i want to be able to be myself completely, without feeling scared they might not like it. i want them to like me for me—like i don't want anything hard. not a fight every day, but something easy—like i know they're it for me, they know i'm it for them, and that's it." by the time he's finished talking, he seems unsure of all that he's said, so he looks to her to see her nod. he lets out a huff of air and wraps it up with, "i just want someone who knows me, you know?"
"yeah, i do."
a slight silence follows destiny's shaky words, making her wonder if she accidentally caused him to pick up on anything, when her door suddenly barges open. her eyes widen and she spins around quickly, finding adora leant through the crack currently opened. "are you ready yet?" she says skeptically, eyeing her up and down.
"ummm," destiny stutters.
"ready for what?" chris' voice comes through destiny's phone speakers.
adora instantly gasps. "destiny!" she exclaims, knowing she told the girl thirty minutes ago to be ready by now.
"sorry!" she immediately apologizes, only receiving a death glare warning enough before the door closes. she then spins around to come face-to-face with chris still on her phone. "we're supposed to be going to a party," she explains to him.
she can see his eyes shine with surprise due to that being out-of-the-ordinary for her, but all he responds with is, "and you still picked up my call?"
destiny can only shrug. "you said you needed someone to vent to."
chris falls silent for a moment, and she can't decipher his emotions through her phone until he eventually begins to smile bright enough to fill her stomach with butterflies. she knows that she's supposed to be moving on since she's literally thousands of miles away, but with a smile like that, how can she?
"i won't keep you any longer then," he says with a light sigh, destiny having to hide her disappointment. "have fun, des."
"bye, chris."
