for the first time in her life, destiny feels nervous to get in matt's car. she hasn't even left her bed yet, but she's already overthinking seeing chris after last nights events.

it's so bad that the alarm she usually sets pretty early just so she'll know that she can wake up and go back to sleep has kept her up to the point that she's already dressed, makeup on, and watching tiktok underneath the warmth of her comforter.

she's awake before nate is, which she's considerably grateful for seeing as she still has not faced him since locking her door and shooing him elsewhere last night. she wouldn't be so anxious about him questioning her over chris because before last night, she had brainwashed herself into believing there wasn't anything to deny anymore in the first place, but now that she's kissed him, facing her own brother seems like a nightmare.

she hadn't seen anything out of the ordinary with chris' instagram post of her before because she refused to let her mind think such a thing anymore, but now with last night fresh in her head, she can't help but wonder the same forbidden thoughts she worked so hard to rid herself of in the first place. she feels delusional again—thinking through all the moments they've shared recently or strange things chris has said that she wasn't able to figure out before in a new light.

she keeps feeling like she's crazy for considering again that maybe chris feels the same as she has for all this time, but then she remembers how vulnerable he seemed on the rooftop and the look in his eyes before he finally kissed her, and she's sure it can't all be in her head.

she's officially back at square one, but when she thinks back to the way his hands felt on her, or the stupid texts he sent her afterwards that made her feel so foolishly reassured, she can't bring herself to be upset about it. in fact, she catches herself grinning at some pointless tiktok playing with the thought of chris in mind and she doesn't care one bit.

it's so early in the morning that it's still not fully brightened up outside and destiny is grinning at her phone like she's been hit by cupid's arrow all over again. totally worth it.

her lovelorn moment is interrupted however, by her own friends who have supposedly woken up just as early as she has, judging by the sudden imessage notifications coming from their group chat.

destiny's sat at her vanity putting earrings on when she hears the knock from her door that she's been dreading, followed by, "let me in, des."

destiny deeply sighs before raising up from her seat and walking over to let nate inside. she stands behind the door, still holding onto the knob as an already-dressed nate is revealed on the other side. she presses her lips together when he quickly steps inside without a word and closes the door for him, then turning around and breathing out, "i don't get why you're so worked up over an instagram post, but—"

"it's not just an instagram post," nate's quick to argue, his eyebrows screwing together as destiny squints at him.

"then what is it?" she questions, crossing her arms over her chest like she would if she was someone with nothing to hide. "me hanging out with chris doesn't mean i'm gonna like, steal your best—"

"you and i both know that's not what this is about," he shuts her down rather quickly, a knowing look in his eyes that makes her a little sick. she gulps as he subtly shakes his head. "i'm not stupid, des."

destiny falters for a moment before carefully picking her words, "nate, i'm serious, there's nothing going on with me and chris." she's lying straight to his face now, and she'd be lying if she said the guilt wasn't getting to her.

"you want there to be," nate states like it's a fact, destiny's heart dropping as her expression remains intact like stone. "i've been trying to ignore it, but it's kind of hard when i know you."

destiny sucks in a sharp breath. "nate, i don't—"

"you don't have to keep lying; i think we're past that," he cuts her off, causing her to shut her mouth. "but destiny, you can't expect anything from him and i'm telling you that. i'm trying to protect you here, inviting him over when i'm not here isn't slick." she feels as if she's receiving a scolding from their father, but she knows she deserves it since she can't remember the last time she was honest to him in terms of chris. it especially stings, however, when all his eyes hold is confusion as he says, "you and i have both seen how chris treats girls. come on, you can't tell me that's really something you want to experience."

destiny bites onto the inside of her lip hard. she's getting told the exact opposite of what she wants to hear right now and yeah, it's a little bit—a lot a bit—soul crushing. she opens her mouth to speak, but she realizes she's unsure of what to defend herself with, so all she can come up with is, "you don't understand."

nate purses his lips, glancing over the features of his sisters sunken face and feeling sympathy for her. "i do," he tries, his eyes softening for only a moment. "which is why you have to know it's my job to make sure nothing happens. you won't protect yourself when it comes to him, so i'm just gonna have to do it for you," he then tells her seriously, her eyebrows drawing together.

she hears his tone of voice and gives him a stern look. "nate," she narrows her eyes at him, failing whatever her goal is when he steps past her to exit her room. she turns to watch him as he opens the door.

before he steps out, he turns around just to say, "matt's here," before disappearing around the corner.

destiny immediately groans of frustration into the silence once she is left alone. she seriously does not have time for nate's overprotective antics when the boy she's wanted for all of her life suddenly doesn't seem so far away anymore. she aggressively grabs her backpack and stomps down the stairs to meet nate waiting by the front door.

her flash of aggravation causes her to forget about her nerves over seeing chris after the previous night, but only until nate opens the front door and it's time to finally face matt's car. now, her stomach is in knots all over again as they begin walking to the vehicle.

she's the first to reach the back door out of her and nate, much to her dismay. once she opens the door, she feels all eyes on her and tries her best to ignore it as she climbs inside. she makes mental note to breathe like a normal person, but she's not sure she's able to fulfill to task so she keeps her head down and ignores the stares of ruben, nick, and adora from the back as she adjusts in her seat.

"hey, des." two words and destiny's on cloud nine. she looks up at the sound of her name on chris' lips, finding him looking back at her from the passenger seat. a lazy grin is taking up his face for anyone to see, but the glint in his eyes feels more sacred, as if only meant for her to decipher the meaning.

her returning grin is an automatic one, like a second nature. "hey, chris," she replies carefully since there's currently several pairs of ears listening in for crumbs to celebrate later.

the eye contact they share lingers for too long, when it is interrupted by her brother suddenly barging in. "scoot over," nate mutters as he takes the seat next to destiny, closing the car door behind him as her expression sours, the moment shared between her and chris now ruined.

she huffs quietly as chris turns back around in his seat, resisting the urge to glare at her brother next to her and instead taking a peak at her spying friends in the back. they all share different teasing expressions and she quickly looks away, now having to resist a grin.

even after catching nate sneak careful glances over at her throughout the entire car ride when group conversation starts up, all destiny can think is: totally worth it.

before she knows it, time passes by rather quickly and they arrive at school. they all pile out of the doors one-by-one and once they're all stood outside, they don't even get a moment to talk because the school bell ringing from inside echos loud enough for them to hear in the parking lot.

instantly, everyone shares panicked looks as adora's eyes decidedly slide over to matt. "i told you to stop driving like such a grandpa!" she exclaims, seeming to blame him for the groups late arrival.

"adora, we spent seven minutes parked outside your house because you 'couldn't find the right jeans,'" he tells her knowingly, making air quotes with his fingers for emphasis as she purses her lips.

"she was valid for that," ruben is adora's first line of defense, making destiny chuckle from the other side of him. her laughter causes her to catch chris' eye within the group and she freezes for a moment before bashfully looking elsewhere. "your driving, however, matt—"

"ruben, do you even have your permit?" nate asks with a knowing tilt of his head, making ruben instantly push his lips together as matt laughs from next to nate.

the two fist bump as ruben turns away from the group to assumedly be the first one to begin heading for the entrance. "i'll shut up now." destiny watches nate and matt interact and realizes his shitty mood is catered only to her, causing her to sigh as well and follow ruben's lead.

ruben looks over when he notices the girl catch up to him, the two walking side-by-side as the rest of the group takes their time still stood by the car. "how'd it go with nate?" he's quick to ask, making her grimace. he laughs at her reaction. "so you're fucked?"

"so fucked," she replies with a long sigh, ruben giving her a look that says he doesn't believe she really cares that much. her eyes remained locked on her own feet as they walk until she eventually returns his look and after a beat of silence, they laugh together. they share a laugh over how fucked she is and continue walking towards the school doors.

once they make it inside, the hallways are mostly empty since the late bell has already rang, so destiny makes it to her locker rather quickly. she puts her backpack up and gets all the supplies she needs, but she hesitates on her way to class. homeroom is first period and it's a class she shares with chris, so she wonders if she should wait for him to go on.

no, that's stupid, she decides. she turns from her locker in the direction of her class, thinking about how just because they kissed doesn't mean he wants her suddenly walking to classes with him.

she kind of wants to though, is that stupid?

with a sigh, she spins back around and heads in the direction of chris' locker instead.

the sound of her shoes against the floor is the only thing she can hear as she turns the corner to the hallway chris' locker is in, not expecting to find him already walking away from it with his stuff in hand. he's a few feet away from her, walking in her direction when he pauses at the sight of her appearing around the corner. "oh," she stupidly says out loud, raising her stuff to hold against her chest.

"oh," chris repeats, his voice laced with amusement as he recovers from his previous faltering, now walking directly to her with an upturn on the side of his lips. "hi, des."

"hi," she responds, almost feeling short of breath as he stops in front of her. "i was going to—" she starts to explain why she's walking this way when all she ends up doing is tripping over her own words, "uh, i figured i'd—"

"yeah, i got that," chris cuts her off, knowing what direction her words were going in and knowingly grinning at her before smoothly stepping to her side and placing a hand on her hip to turn her in the direction of their class. "c'mon."

oh, destiny's pounding heart is surely going to explode in her chest as she thinks, she could definitely get used to this. she looks down to the touch just to confirm it's there and she's not hallucinating before allowing a small smile to form on her lips as they begin walking.

has she mentioned yet that how despite all the consequences she's sure to be facing soon, last night was totally worth it?
