when on the morning of the first day of school, destiny is not woken up to the sound of her alarm, but ruben calling her phone, she is very confused.

rubbing her eyes as she blindly reaches over to her vibrating phone on the bedside table, she feels exhausted. she's not even at school yet, she's only just woken up, and she's already prepared for death. she takes in a breath and slowly peels her eyes open to find ruben's contact.

she also sees the time in the corner and immediately picks up. "5:36, ruben? you're calling me at five in the morning?" are her first words into the phone, her voice coming out hushed. "what is wrong with you?"

"okay well," ruben pauses for a hot minute before sucking in a breath and responding, "i've got bad news, i'm afraid.."

destiny sighs deeply, setting her phone down for a second to attempt and fully wake up by sitting up properly. she then brings it to her ear again. "what."

"my cars kind of sort of maybe um—"

"ruben."

"i—okay, she's a little broken down, des."

destiny intakes a sharp breath, trying to process this so early in the morning. see, her alarm is usually set for 6 am on the dot. "a little?" she repeats, the narrowing of her eyes obvious by the tone of her voice. "how does your car get a little broken down?"

"i literally don't know," he complains, groaning as he continues, "but i was going to be so smart and try to grab coffee ahead of time so i won't want to kill myself, but then my car wouldn't start and i was like oh."

destiny pinches the bridge of her nose in frustration for a moment. ever since ruben got his car, he's promised that he'd be her and adora's every day transportation to school. destiny has her license as well, so his car breaking down shouldn't be a problem, but she hasn't exactly invested in saving for a car yet. her brother did of course, but he refuses to drive when he can simply leech off of matt. he'd also never let her take his car.

"okay so," she stops for a few seconds to give herself time to think before simply suggesting, "what about adoras car?"

"funny thing about that actually..." adora's voice suddenly cuts in through the phone, making destiny's eyebrows instantly furrow.

"adora, what the fuck?" she exclaims, feeling like the exhaustion has gotten to her. "since when were you on the call?"

"since always, silly," she responds without care. "i've just been waiting to speak."

"yeah, des," ruben cuts in now. "catch up."

"bitch, it's five in the morning and you just told me your car is broken down like i'm some sort of magic problem solver like?.."

"well, you might not be a problem solver, but," he pauses for a moment, destiny hearing adora's quiet giggling before he goes on and already sighing. "the triplets howev—"

"i hate you."

"deeeeeees c'mo—"

her eyes are rolled into the back of her head when she says, "just give me one second."

she pulls her phone from her ear after she's spoken, ignoring their little cheers which are crazy for five in the morning, and hangs up. she then takes a moment to sigh before pulling up her group chat with the triplets and nate. she's not sure if nate's awake and she could just go check, but that requires her leaving her bed and that is not something she's willing to do yet.
