Three days later.

CARSON'S FACE SCRUNCHED SLIGHTLY AS HE BEGAN WAKING UP FROM HIS SLEEP. As he came around, the sounds that were coming from Wanda's TV, which they forgot to turn off, filled his ears. He gently slid his hands from Wanda's waist being careful not to wake her and began blindly moving his hand around the bed to find the remote to turn off the TV.

As his hand touched the remote, he accidentally pressed one of the buttons and ended up changing the channel. He rolled his eyes and picked up the remote to turn off the TV, but the voice of a news reporter was heard on the channel.

"A bomb that was hidden in a news van, ripped through the UN building in Vienna."

Carson's movements came to a sudden stop when he heard what the man said, his head snapped over to the screen, seeing clips of firefighters running into the building and putting out the fires. He carefully moved Wanda from off his chest and sat up in the bed, listening as the reporter continued.

"More than seventy people have been injured and at least twelve are dead." The man on the screen informed the viewers. "Including Wakanda's King T'Chaka."

He wiped his hand over his face as he continued to watch the screen. And then it hit him. He was going to be going there today but Tony said that he could sign the next time he saw him. That he had to stay at the compound with Wanda. Something about it being too dangerous for her to leave and that it was best if he stayed with her so she wouldn't think anything of it.

He was supposed to go with Natasha.

Who still decided to go. Today.

Carson quickly reached over to the bedside table that was on his side and grabbed his phone, calling Natasha straight away.

No answer.

"Come on Romanoff, pick up." He mumbled as he tried to ring her again.

"Officials have released a video of a suspect..."

The reported spoke up once more which grabbed Carson's attention, he looked up at the screen with his phone still pressed to his ear as he listened to the line still ringing.

"... who they have identified as James Buchanan Barnes. The Winter Solder. The infamous HYDRA agent linked to numerous acts of terrorism and political assassinations. Barnes has also known to be affiliated with the well known Avenger, Carson Swan. The pair both being the faces behind the more recent killings and destruction of numerous S.H.I.E.L.D bases--"

Carson huffed and muted the TV, throwing the remote down harshly on the bed which made Wanda shift in her sleep slightly. Just as he was about to call Natasha again, her name popped up on his screen and he answered straight away, a wave of relief instantly washing over him.

"Nat? I just saw the news... are you--"

"Yeah... I'm fine, I got lucky." Natasha said. "I saw the missed calls, sorry I didn't answer sooner, I couldn't find my phone and then I was talking to T'Challa then Steve-- It's all going to shit."

"You talked to Steve?" Carson asked.

"He called me before I called you, he's... he's going to go after Barnes, he thinks that he can help him or get through to him. I tried to talk to him out of it but-- Well you saw his reaction when you told him about working with Bucky while under Nikolai's control, now he's finally got a location on him, you really think he's going to stop?"

Carson took a deep breath before speaking. "I know Nat, I know. But if he goes after Barnes and it goes wrong, then he could make this worse... for all of us." He said while getting out of Wanda's bed and picking his clothes up from off the floor, quickly putting them on. "Are you going to tell anyone about this, that he called you?"

"Are you?" Natasha replied.

Carson furrowed his brows and shook his head. "No, this is Steve we're talking about. I can't do that, I won't."

Natasha stayed silent and didn't reply, at first he thought that the signal had been lost but he could still hear people in the background.

"Wait, are you saying you'll arrest him?" Carson questioned quietly.

"What? No, no. I wouldn't do that." Natasha responded quickly after hearing his question. "But someone will if he interferes. That's how this works now."

"I know." Carson sighed and glanced back over at the TV which was still showing footage of the burning building, he picked up the remote and turned it off. "Are you sure you're okay Nat?"

"Yeah, the paramedics had to do a quick check up once I got out, just a few scratches but other than that I'm fine."

"I'm sorry I wasn't there."

"Carson, hey, don't worry about it." She assured. "This whole thing was a shock for everyone, there's nothing anyone could've done. Besides, you need to stay with Wanda remember?"

"Yeah, you're right." He walked over to the window and put his hand against the frame, leaning against it as he looked out of the window.

"How is that going by the way? Have you told Wanda what you're thinking?"

He glanced over his shoulder and looked at his girlfriend who was still completely out of it. "Not yet."

Carson knew what road this conversation was heading down so he made his way over to the door and stepped into the hallway, closing the door behind him.

"What's her take on it?"

Although it had been a few days since the accords meeting, the couple still hadn't really spoke much on it. Not since the discussion with the rest of the team.

But they didn't need to talk about it to realise where this situation was going.

To know what they were both thinking.

No matter how many times they both tried to ignore the tension that was brewing between the pair of them, they knew deep down that at one point they'd have to address it sooner or later. They just didn't want to accept it.

Carson grasped that Wanda wasn't going to sign the accords and Wanda was pretty certain that Carson would. The only thing that was holding him back was her.

"You still there?" Natasha asked.

"Sorry." He cleared his throat. "Uh, Wanda is... TBD."

"And you?"

"Tony needs me to go to Queens with him in few days, which will give me time to talk things over with Wanda." He said. "But I think... I'll do it Nat. I mean, I have to."

The sound of shuffling was heard coming from Wanda's room following by a small yawn. "Nat I gotta go, but we'll talk soon alright?"

"Of course. Give my best to Wanda alright? Talk to you soon."

Carson hung up and let out a breath, tapping his phone against his hand. He opened the door to see Wanda using her powers to open one of her draws and pull out one of Carson's hoodies before putting it on, considering she was just in a bra and shorts.

"Morning Maximoff." He turned around from closing the door and came to a stop when he saw her struggle to put on the hoodie, watching as she fumbled around trying to find where she was supposed to put her head.

"Where the hell-- I can't find it!" Her voice came out muffled as she spoke with her head still covered by the fabric.

Carson chuckled and walked over to her, manoeuvring the hoodie and finally getting it in the right position so she could stick her head through the top.

"Phew, that was kinda scary." She breathed out, putting her arms through the sleeves.

"Yeah, it looked terrifying." He nodded, gently moving the hair out of her face and tucking it back behind her ears.

Wanda looked up at him and smiled, her nose scrunching in the process. "Where did you go?" She grabbed his hand and pulled him down on the bed next to her.

He turned on his side and propped his head up with his hand, Wanda doing the same.

"Something happened in Vienna... there was a bomb that was triggered at the UN."

Wanda's eyes widened. "Wait what-- Is everyone okay? Wasn't Nat there?"

"There was twelve deaths but more people injured." He informed her. "Nat is fine, she got lucky. In fact I just got off the phone with her, we was talking talking about Steve and the accords..."

He noticed the change in Wanda's demeanour instantly once he mentioned the accords. Her heart rate picked up slightly, she instantly looked away from Carson's gaze and down at the bed as she drew random shapes on the sheets with her finger.

"Wands..." He started, not really knowing the best way to start this conversation.

Looks like it was sooner rather than later, huh?

"I know what you're going to say." She said quietly, looking up at him again. "You're going to sign, aren't you?"

Carson took a deep breath before speaking. "I have to."

Wanda shrugged. "You don't have to do anything, this is your choice Carson."

"It's the right thing to do."

"What, letting the government dictate every move we make? Letting them control us?" She sat up and crossed her legs.

"All the things I've done Wanda... the pain and suffering I've caused." He turned onto his back and looked up at the ceiling. "By signing it can help with that, make sure that it won't happen again."

Wanda furrowed her brows and shook her head. "How is the government going to help with that!"

"Because maybe if these rules were already set then it would've never happened in the first place!" He argued back. "If we had had the restraint, the control, then maybe we would've never of gone to that base with the little info that we had and maybe we could've actually had a shot at taking it down. But instead, look what happened. All the death and destruction that occurred. We're supposed to be Earth's mightiest hero's, but all we seem to do is cause more problems."

Wanda inhaled sharply. "What if they send us somewhere to do something that we don't agree with and we have no choice but to follow their orders? I'm not living my life by the decisions of other people Carson, I won't allow it."

"That won't happen."

"But you don't know that!" Wanda shuffled off the bed and began walking around the room and she spoke. "Can't you see that by signing this, we'd be acting like the governments servants? We'd be like-- like their puppets! I thought that you, out of all people, would understand..." She faltered at the end of her sentence and Carson sat up, raising a brow at her.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"I didn't-- I didn't mean for it to come out like that..." Wanda spoke quietly. "I just mean that..."

"I know what you meant." He said in a monotone voice. "But this is different from that."

"How is it different? We'd basically be their lapdogs either way--"

"Oh so I'm someone's pet now?"

"If you sign then yes! It will be just like it was a few months ago, you did everything that Nikolai wanted, everything that Hydra wanted!"

"Did you seriously just say that?" Carson clenched his jaw. "My brain was CHEMICALLY ALTERED to do those things Wanda! This is not the same as that. It wasn't free will!"

"If you agree to this then you'll be throwing away your free will anyway!"

"I am choosing to do this Wanda! This is where it differs. I'm making the decision to sign this. Nobody else. Not you, not Tony, not Steve, not Nat. Me."

"Sorry to interfere, but Mr. Stark is on the line for Mr. Swan on one of the video calls in the lab." FRIDAY's voice was heard in the room.

Carson cleared his throat. "I'll be there in a minute."

The room fell silent, both of them breathing heavily from the frustration of the argument. Wanda walked back over to the end of the bed and ran a hand through her hair, her eyes starting to fill up. Carson made his way over to the door but just as he was about to leave Wanda started talking again.

"I can't sign them Carson, I can't do it."

He stopped in the door way, his back facing her. He glanced over at Wanda from over his shoulder, the pair of them making eye contact. Carson opened his mouth to say something but stopped and remained silent.

Without saying another word, Carson left Wanda's room and closed the door behind him.
