018. ━━━ ❛ WE DON'T TALK? ❜
real life. . .
MAISIE AND SUNNY HAVE laid outside on lounge chairs beside maisie's pool for the past half hour, music blaring from a bluetooth speaker while they both enjoy the many pros of her usual parent-free home. maisie's end goal is to walk away tanned, but sunny is more focused on texting her boy.
sunny's sudden hum overpowers the music, catching maisie's attention. "that's weird," she says aloud with her eyes still on her phone.
"what?" maisie mumbles, still remaining still.
"he asked me what i'm doing and when i said i'm here with you, he asked if your parents are home," she explains, finally glancing over to maisie to see her reaction.
"uh," maisie is quick to sit up using the back of her elbows, raising one of her hands to lower her sunglasses and look her friend directly in the eyes. "if chris seriously thinks i'm letting him come over so you guys ca-"
"MAISIEEE," sunny cuts her off with a loud yell, causing the girl to giggle as sunny looks away and shakes her head. "stop talking."
"lips are sealed," she sighs amusedly, laying back down peacefully with a slight smile on her face.
"he said matt's with him too," sunny then says, snapping her head around once more.
maisie slowly presses her lips together, hating how immediately swayed she feels. she hasn't seen matt since he stormed out of her house the other day, and she feels that. they have things to discuss now that he's seen all the messages she recieves, so she unfortunately sits up again rather quickly this time. "well, in that case-"
this time sunny's the one to burst out laughing, and maisie is left to purse her lips and watch her own friend so amused by her actions. "mais, you're sooo bad," she says through giggles once her laughter dies down.
"shut up." she only rolls her eyes, now making the effort to fully sit up and pull her legs to her chest. she's desperate to get the topic off of her, so she tilts her head at sunny. "have you gotten chris locked down yet?"
sunny raises her eyebrows, looking down to type one more message on her phone before setting it down and turning to face her best friend. "bitch, i've had him locked down," she tells her confidently, maisie chuckling at her response before she adds with a huff, "but when is he gonna ask me to be his girlfriend? i'd love to know."
"you guys have been talking since literally before i hooked up with matt, and that was forever ago," maisie reminds her, thinking back to the time that doesn't feel so distant in her head. "it's time for the man to step up."
"real," sunny hums, picking up her phone once it vibrates. maisie watches her face scrunch up as she silently reads the notification, eventually turning to her with a mix of emotions taking over her features. "he said we need to talk."
maisie's eyes widen, the two sharing a quiet, horrified look, as every girl alive ever knows that those words are pretty much never good. the silence continues to grow tense until it is broken by the sound of sunny's acrylics tapping against her phone screen to type out a response. maisie sucks in a breath, attempting to ease the gears she sees turning in her best friend's head, "well, it's not like he can break up with you if—"
maisie is cut off when sunny's head snaps back up to look at her confusedly all over again. "no, he means we need to talk," she tries to clarify, maisie's eyebrows only furrowing in response. sunny looks back down to her phone to make sure she's got it right before she looks back up and specifies further, "like all four of us."
"uh, what?" maisie responds blankly, pure confusion in her voice as she blinks at her friend sat in front of her. sunny only shrugs, not understanding either. maisie frowns, slowly leaning back in her chair and sighing, "just make sure they pull into their driveway, not mine, i guess.."
"'kay," sunny mumbles, typing away on her phone again.
a silence spreads between the girls then, a comfortable one as they know they're both silently wondering what could be important enough for all of them to need to talk about. it's better for them to overthink together, so they continue to do so as they wait for the boys' impending arrival.
about fifteen minutes pass before sunny gets the text that they're outside, so maisie stays soaking in the sun while she quickly gets to her feet and heads inside to answer the door. maisie adjusts her sunglasses as her eyes remain focused on the sky above, so in her own head that she misses the sound of the patio door sliding back open. she does hear the footsteps that follow, however, and turns her head once they get closer.
her eyebrows raise at the sight of matt and only matt—sunny and chris nowhere to be found. she quickly sits up with the help of the backside of her elbows, reaching a hand up to lower her sunglasses and see him walking towards her more clearly. she can spot his eyes scanning over her body from a mile away, suddenly becoming aware of how exposed she is and narrowing her eyes once he stops to stand at the end of her chair. she watches his pupils dilate once his eyes finally trail up to her face, the signature upturn to his lips forming along with his seemingly pleased voice when he opens his smug mouth, "hey, mason."
"you left sunny and chris alone together in my house?" maisie's concern is not with giving him an actual response, clearly.
matt rolls his eyes, walking towards the chair to her side that sunny was previously sat on. "it's not like they're getting freaky, weirdo," he tells her dubiously, causing maisie to huff and push her sunglasses back on her eyes. he does not lay on the other chair like sunny had, but pulls it closer to maisie's before sitting down on the edge facing her. maisie notices what is hardly anything, and wishes it didn't give off such a distinct feeling in her stomach as he goes on, "they're talking."
"oh so this is serious, then?" maisie asks curiously, her voice not yet amusement-ridden.
"mhm," matt hums, his hand subconsciously rubbing the bottom of his mouth. maisie starts to get the feeling that he's lost focus thanks to his new position across from her when she notices his eyes linger on her body more than her face. "pretty serious." the second time he speaks, it's basically a mumble, so maisie immediately knows she's right, nearly laughing aloud at the obviousness of his wandering eyes.
maisie shakes her head to herself, looking ahead of her rather than matt when she simply states, "you're gross."
matt instantly scoffs, seemingly snapping out of his trance and realizing what she must be talking about rather quickly. once her eyes return to him, she can tell that he's resisting from smiling at being caught, and she hates that it doesn't piss her off as much as it should. "i haven't even said anything."
maisie just barely squints at him. "your face did."
he chuckles at her comment, only finding her expression amusing as he leans back with his hands rested behind him on the surface of the chair. "you knew what you were doing letting me come over when you're looking like that." and he's right, but he doesn't need to know that. maisie resists from smiling to herself in satisfaction as he shakes his head subtly. "it's like the skirt all over again."
immediately, she groans. "oh my god, here you go."
matt smiles smugly at the building frustration on maisie's face, knowing her enough by now to figure it's more lighthearted than he usually thinks she is being. he leans forward to come closer to her before lowering his voice enough that it comes off huskier, "you know what this swimsuit reminds me of, mason?" there is a familiar glint in his eyes as his focus drops back down to her figure before him.
maisie presses her lips together, embarrassing goosebumps breaking out across her arms when his hands reach forward to lightly tap his fingers along the bare skin of her revealed stomach. she takes in a breath before defeatedly replying, "what, matt?"
"the set you were wearing the night we hooked up."
maisie presses her lips together yet again, now with additional heat rushing to her face. she has no choice but to break their eye contact, causing him to immediately laugh, to which she ignores as she regathers herself. once she finally looks back to him, he's stupidly cheesing as she sighs, "why is that every time you see me you're trying to get me hot and bothered?"
matt's grin only grows as he manages a shrug. "i enjoy it," he answers cryptically.
"right," she hums, looking off into the distance before she raises her eyebrows at him with the remembrance that he came here for a reason. "didn't you come here so we could talk about something? or have you forgotten about that?"
matt blinks repeatedly. he had in fact forgotten. "righttt," his voice trails off, causing maisie to resist from giggling. he seems to grow serious, however, with the reminder of his purpose for being here. his body language changes as he runs a hand through his hair. maisie furrows her eyebrows at him and he takes in a breath. "there's just.. a lot."
"sooo," her voice stretches, "is this about the texts?" she guesses, not having a clue what else it could be about. ooh, lamar maybe, her brain then stupidly teases.
matt's face quickly changes, leading her to believe he nearly forgot about the texts completely, which confuses her even more. "no," he answers after a pause, then pausing again before he finally adds, "i still don't understand why you wouldn't just show me those though."
maisie almost scoffs at his question, because when has there ever been that sort of trust between them? "why would i?" she asks abruptly, matt's eyebrows shooting up at her immediate choice to put up an argument. "we don't talk." they've literally never really had a meaningful conversation before.
"we don't talk?" he repeats absurdly, maisie openly rolling her eyes at his tone, which only adds to both of their growing irritation at the sudden topic. he dryly laughs, a noise aggravating enough to nearly make maisie's eye twitch, before he continues with a dubious, "what do you think we're doing right now, maisie?"
"seems to me like you're just trying to get in my pants, so nothing out of the usual, really," she quips pointedly, catching the quick twitch of matt's jaw after the words leave her mouth. she's not sure what possessed her to just say that. his eyebrows raise, and she can tell she's really annoyed him now, which doesn't make much sense to her, because it's not like he's had any shame in his pretty clear motives with her so far.
"really?" he scoffs, taking offense in her accusation like that would be completely out of character for him. news flash: it isn't. "if i was just trying to get in your pants, why would i stick around?" matt asks, trying to make a point to her that she just isn't seeing.
"you already got what you wanted, matt," maisie answers confidently, continuing to worsen matt's growing anger with this conversation. "you stick around because you have to. don't act like you ever wanted to be around me before sunny met chris."
"oh, fucking spare me. you avoided me like the plague after we hooked up, so a shit wasn't given about what i wanted, was it?" matt's quick response is just as fueled as maisie's, catching her off guard with the weight of his words.
maisie wishes she was given a chance to properly come up with a response, or better yet, just even process what he's implying, but the moment is taken from her when he suddenly snaps his head around. she looks to see what's stolen his attention from their heated conversation only to find sunny and chris coming outside.
maisie begins to internally calm herself down at the sight of her best friend, finding herself growing confused yet again at the peaceful smile on her face as she approaches her and matt with chris right at her side. "doesn't seem like he told her anything either," she mutters for only matt to hear as they both watch them come closer.
"that's because he didn't," matt confirms after he catches chris' eye and his expression is doubtful, discreetly shaking his head while sunny can not see. he then slowly turns back around to face maisie, and despite their previous tempers, they share a look.
maisie frowns as sunny is the first to make it to them, quickly altering her expression when her best friend stands right in front of her. she opens her mouth to speak, but sunny lets out a squeal, interrupting her to excitedly announce, "don't speak to me, i'm dating a rockstar."
matt and maisie's eyes both widen in unison, the two both looking to each other on instinct. even though maisie has not a clue what it is chris is hiding from her, she's smart enough to figure that it's pretty fucking serious. sunny looks between them in anticipation, her face beginning to falter when they don't react immediately. quickly, maisie forces a gasp, internally sighing of relief when sunny's smile returns. "no way."
"yes way!" sunny exclaims, beaming at her best friend as chris hides his frown to mouth to matt: i freaked out. maisie wishes she wasn't so aware of her obliviousness, shoving down the guilt she feels in assisting in keeping something from her when she asks, "so what did matt have to talk to you about?"
"oh, we actually still haven't gotten to that yet," she tells her truthfully, her eyes trailing over to matt with the topic.
matt's ears perk up, having overheard the question, and he looks back at maisie. "we can talk tonight," he says rather vaguely, and she finds his suggestion funny, like talking to him is exactly what she wants to do with how it was going beforehand.
"tonight?" she repeats, doing little to hide the tone of her voice with a passive aggressive smile.
"yeah, tonight," he repeats confidently, standing up all of a sudden like he's got places to be. maisie gets the urge to laugh as he walks over to chris and tries to subtly direct him back towards the patio door. "i'll pick you up. we'll talk then," he says all without looking at her, only adding to her internal rage.
"sure," maisie's reply is short, and so is her smile when matt turns to take a glance at it. he doesn't bother with anything else, wordlessly heading for the door and leaving chris to say goodbye to sunny.
she's not sure why her calling him out for being such a freak upsets him so much when quite frankly, she feels like that's all he ever let's her see of him.
