Chapter 30: A New Friend
About a week and a half passes by with only a few deaths all. I think everyone has the same strategy; play it safe. At this point, today is day 14.
We ran out of water last night. Luckily, a sponsor gave us another gallon.
My wound is also starting to heal. The pain is mostly just in the night now; it's not on an off in the middle of the day anymore. It feels much better.
"Chia?" Max asks, shivering.
"Yeah?" I reply.
"These games feel like they might go on forever."
"Don't worry, it'll end soon."
I lie down on the cold, hard ground of the cave, reaching for the last piece of deer. We tried to hunt again, but we had no luck. Today, we finish the deer. Today, we try to hunt again.
After 10 minutes, I grab my belt with knives and start to walk out with Max. Ash stays back to set up a campfire.
We sit high up in a tree and I try throwing my knives at a large bird. After a few tries, it falls to the ground, motionless.
As we return to the cave and cook the meal, I start to feel the sadness of killing and eating an animal. I have never hunted in District 2, so it was really hard to learn so fast.
Back at home, we did have a training school. You can pay extra tuition fees and attend training for the Hunger Games, but we were too poor to afford that.
I let Max and Ash eat the bird, because I just ate the last of the deer. They each take a small piece and pack up the rest.
We have a sip of water each and lie down again. There's literally nothing to do. I don't want to risk it and collide with another tribute, but at the same time, I don't think I can take the boringness and longer.
I start thinking about what would happen if all the tributes died but the three of us. Only one can win; what would we do?
I start to worry and panic, but then calm myself down. That's later. Think about surviving now.
A voice now booms through the arena.
"Hello guys! It is I, your fellow head game maker, Claudius. We have noticed that these games are getting more boring by the moment. No deaths at all. So let's make a deal. For the feast of this year's games, we have restocked the cornucopia with certain supplies you need. If you wish to participate in this second bloodbath, step in the tube that will appear in front of you. Be aware you will lose all the supplies you currently have. We know a bunch of you guys need something desperately, whether it be food, water, meds, or weapons. It's all there. So go on. Good luck!"
We stare at each other wide eyed. What? The bloodbath, again?
Suddenly, three tubes pop up in front of us. We each stand in one.
The tubes close and we emerge underground. We travel like this for about 5 minutes, until we reach the Cornucopia again.
I see less than half of the pedestals taken, the rest bare. I stand in a running stance. I see Max too far away from me, and Ash is next to me. I am careful not to accidentally drop snow on the ground, or else the mines will activate.
The countdown begins. This time, I aim for what I need.
I don't see any throwing knives that aren't in the horn. They are too deep in, I don't want to risk getting wounded again.
I see a burlap sack full of something sitting close to my pedestal.
I also spot a spear with 2 extra heads buried into the ground a few feet away from the burlap sack.
I don't know how to use a spear, but i'll try and learn.
5...
I stand in a running stance.
4...
I try to remember how to run faster.
3...
2...
1...
GO!
I sprint as fast as I can to the sack. I slump it over my shoulder before the girl with light hair and small eyes can grab it from me. She chases me down the pathway as I slump over and grab the spear and heads while she swings her sickle.
I face her and stop running. I can't run away, the games will last forever. I have to make at least one kill.
I don't know how to use a spear. I hold the heavy weapon in an awkward position, trying to figure it out while she grips her sickle. I drop the burlap sack, mid battle, and let go of the spear.
It pierces her stomach and her face goes pale. I watch as blood gushes out of her stomach, her hand trying to hold it in. Her knees unlock and she falls to the ground, still. I hear screams and cries in the distance. I fall to the ground and slowly take the spear out of the 17 year old girl's stomach. She coughs once, blood coming out of the mouth, then lies down, completely motionless. I get up and pick up the burlap sack and grab a small box I see in front of me, running into the distance.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After running for 20 minutes, I sit down at a log. I'm alone now, Max and Ash are somewhere else. I breathe slowly and open up the sack I got. Inside is about 25 potatoes.
Wow.
I pick up some sticks and logs, dropping them in a circle. As I try to light a fire, I hear 4 cannon shots in the distance. 4 dead at the 2nd bloodbath. Okay, not bad.
I rub the sticks together in a certain direction until they make a small spark of fire. I throw it on the fire pit and it erupts in flames.
I use one of the spear heads to peel two potatoes for me. As a roast them above a fire, I hear rustles around me. "Hello?" I ask, standing up, holding a spear in my hand.
The leaves rustle behind me again. "Who's there?" I ask. It's getting dark now.
I eventually give up and look behind the bushes. Sitting there is a young girl, probably the age of 13, skinny and scared. She stares at one thing: the potatoes.
I drop my weapon and help her up. I walk her over to the log and she sits on it, without any hesitation. I look at her closely. She has crystal blue, droopy eyes and sand colored skin. She has short, wavy black hair that reaches her shoulders. It looks just like my hair. Her lips were chapped and bleeding, and she didn't have a coat.
I look around in the small box I grabbed last minute. Inside lies an extra coat and warm, black boots.
She shivers as she puts on the coat and boots silently, still looking at the potatoes.
I put a potato on a stick and hand it to the girl. She takes a bite out of it instantly, not caring that it probably burned her mouth.
"What's your name?" I ask quietly.
"My name is Kirsten Lei. You?" She responds.
"I'm Chia, Chia Nights." I say back.
"I'm from District 8, and I'm 13 years old." she whispers.
"Great! I'm 16, from 2."
"This potato is yummy!"
"Haha, thanks."
"Thank you for letting me stay here. I thought you might kill me, I was scared for my life."
"No problem."
I finish my potato and put out the fire. The young girl had nothing except for 2 canteens of water and an empty backpack. She gives me one in appreciation and I take a sip.
We lay down under a tree, the roots like our pillows. The burlap sack is huge, both of us can easily fit in it. So we decide to put the potatoes in the backpack and use the sack as a sleeping bag. Kirsten slept soundly, trusting my new alliance with her completely. I had a feeling she would get along with Max pretty well.
I eventually doze off to sleep quietly, but when I wake up in the middle of the night, Kirsten is shivering badly in the other side of the sack. I shake her shoulder.
"Hey! Kirsten! You okay?"
She says nothing. After a hot second, she says one thing.
"C-c-cold-d."
I sit up against the trunk of the tree and push her up too. She hugs herself tightly, eyes slightly open. Her lips are still bleeding and she pants a lot.
I reach over to my canteen and open the lid. Kirsten looks like she might freeze and die now.
I pour some water into her dehydrated mouth and she stops shivering a little bit. I also hold my last heat pouch against her palms.
She is still cold.
I have an idea.
"Kirsten, try cupping your hands over your ears."
She does so.
I read somewhere that covering up the ears warms up half of the body.
It worked.
Kirsten was still a bit cold, but she was alright now.
We sat upright for the next 10 minutes.
Kirsten then did something that made me feel like a responsible older sister or something.
She hugged me!
I enveloped her small torso with my long arms and she whispered, "You saved my life. Thank you."
I think I just made a new friend.
