Chapter 24: The Bomb
I wake up early that morning, only to find all the chicken gone. There is no way that Max and Ash were able to eat ALL of it. I sigh and collapse on the uncomfortable log cot. We're back to square 1. No food. No water. No meds. We need those packs. I shift over and force myself off the logs, wincing from my arm pain. I tuck my messy hair behind my ear and try my best to braid it, but it doesn't work, so I toss it up into a messy bun. I then pull a heavy tube out from under the cot. No wait, it isn't a tube. Wait... IT'S A BOMB!
I scream and start shaking. The bomb reads 2 minutes. I start panicking and putting everything in boxes, carrying them out of the hut far away one by one. When the signal says 50 seconds, I carry Max over my shoulder and nudge Ash. 40 seconds. Ashley is peacefully sleeping. I groan and sprint over to the supplies, setting Max down there. When I get back to the hut, the bomb reads 30 seconds. AH! In spite of my killer pain, I scream and shake Ash. She finally awakens. The bomb reads 25 seconds. "RUN ASH! RUN!" she sprints out of the hut and I follow behind. We just step out when I turn around. "ASH! MY NECKLACE! YOU KNOW, THE ONE WITH THE RING?!?!" I exclaim. I turn and run towards the hut. I am inside the hut, frantically searching, when it happens.
BOOM!
The fiery explosion erupts, and everything is in flames for a second. So am I. I scream and pain bursts down my back as I feel the burns everywhere. Suddenly, Ash comes out holding a large bucket of water she found under the rock. She splashes it everywhere, and the fire is gone.
Everything is ash.
I pant, my face covered in dust and scars. Ash immediately starts rummaging through the remains in order to find the jewelry. I cough and wheeze. Ash crouches down in front of me and places the necklace in my palm. I look up at her and smile. "Thank you." I mouth silently. She gives me a smile of appreciation and hugs me tightly. I sob into her shoulder and hold on to her. She laugh-cries too, and Max joins in. We all just sit there in silence. Suddenly, Max claims to hear a faint whoosh. We follow the noise, only to find a parachute. Inside, there was a small leather baggy. Max undid the button to make it open. Inside was a short syringe with a large needle. next to the needle was near a very tiny jar of liquid. I stare at it, confused. Ashley shakes the jar. Suddenly, the syrup turns thicker and purple.
Ashley gasps.
"Guys, that's Shea! I studied it in the training center. The game developers created it recently. It looks yellow and sweet, like honey, but when you shake it, it turns dark purple! It's extremely helpful and can numb wounds, but when too much is applied, bad things can happen!" she informs. We all inject a tiny bit into our wounds.
"Be careful!" Max states.
Then I remember; Max got a jar of identical liquid in his pack. I run to the 3 packs, our only things, and try to wipe away the ashes. I then unzip the pack and pull out a small pint size container of Shea.
I throw my arms up in delight and start smiling.
The arena suddenly makes a techy noise.
"Hello, fellow ones. I am pleased to announce that the search has begun. I just want to say that some of you were on the verge of being blown up by the mines. That being, Max, Chia, and Ashley. Tributes, stay careful, and let the search BEGIN!"
The arena repeats a techy beep thing 3 times, and then a ring.
Lets do this thing.
