Chapter 22: The Chicken And The Bone
When I wake up, I see that I am wrapped up in the last of gauze and medical supplies we have, and an ointment is smeared across my left forearm. When I move it, I scream in pain. Ash quietly tells me that I mildly hurt my arm from when Sparrow tackled me. I stare in shock. How am I supposed to help Max and Ash if I can't use my arm?
"You can still throw knives with your right hand," Ash tells me. "Plus, it will heal by tomorrow. It's not that bad."
"Good." I mumble back. I feel the gauze wetting and realize that its soaked in blood red. Quickly, I remove it and look for some more, even though I am positive we don't have any. Ash lifts my head up by my cheeks and says this:
"Listen Chia. You will be okay, I promise. Someone raided your bag and took practically everything. Don't worry. We will kill whoever did this.."
I sigh in disappointment. I really cannot move my arm. My face is dirty with mud and my hair is all messed up. My green shirt is now half blood red, and blood stains cover my pants. Unlike the first day, we had noting except the water, sleeping bags, communication devices, and beef jerky. Apparently, someone broke in and took all of our supplies when I was passed out and Ash and Max came to help me. Suddenly I hear a faint whoosh outside. I groggily rub my head and get up. My arm throbs badly and I feel lightheaded. If no one dies in the next 24 hours, there is no way I can make it through the games. I ask Ash if she can help me put my hair up in a high ponytail, and she does so. She also takes my jacket off me so I don't die of heat stroke. I then walk out to the front of the hut and remove the tarp and vines. Ash is boiling some water because we don't have anymore iodine. Max is feeding the starving horses the last of our beef jerky. We don't have anymore food. We have to go hunting again today. I protect my arm as best as I can until I get outside. I close my eyes and take a deep, wonderful breath. When I open them, I see a silver box perched up high in a tree. I get so happy that I don't even notice the killer pain of my arm as I scale the tree. When I finally get the parachute, I sprint into the hut and yell, "WE GOT A SPONSOR!". Both my allies yell in happiness as we open the parachute. Inside is a tan cast roll with two little silver clips to fasten it, and a small slip of paper. It says, "Chia, use this for your arm. Oh, and you got to let go of the horses. You guys can't take care of 3 horses during the games! Plus, they are starving. They know how to live on their own. - G & A"
"They're right, Chia. We have to let them go. I'm sorry. Max and I are going to the cornucopia and release them. You just stay here and relax, okay?" Ash says.
I think about it for a minute and finally reply, "Alright."
They wave goodbye and run off into the distance with the horses. While I am sitting on the cot and wrapping the cast up, I hear a thundering BOOM. This is followed by 2 more cannons. I sigh. Counting in my head, there are 10 tributes dead already. After a few minutes, I feel much better and I am able to walk around more. I run out of the hut and strap my bag on, wielding a dagger in my right hand. I slowly walk in the direction we came from, and I spot a group of tributes surrounding a fire while chewing something on a bone. I look to the left and find a short tree. I am able to launch myself up into the tree without using both arms. This is easy, because Dad taught me how to do things with one arm when I was 12. I scale the tree and perch up in a high up branch, about 17 feet high. I remove my pack and use some rope that I find in a pocket of the pack to tie myself into the tree. While I am doing so, I large branch below me snaps and falls. The surprised group looks confused, but re submerged themselves in eating the rich and juicy meat. I lick my lips and find three of the biggest knives I have. I hang the pack on a branch and sit in a squatting position. I close one eye and aim one knife at the stump next to the curly haired kid. I let go of the knife, my grip loosing and then releasing, the knife goes flying and buries itself a few inches away from the boy. He looks scared, and he stands up looking around, holding his spear up in the air. I recognize the other boy. He was the one from District 10 who helped me in my dream. I aim my second knife at a tree trunk behind JD, the District 10 boy. I know his name because I made sure to check the big poster of all the tributes before the games started, and made a mental list of everyone that I recognize. I hurl the dagger right at the trunk, and lucky enough, he turned around only to see the blade right above his head. Now, all three members were standing up. JD held a mace and the young girl had a slingshot and a mini trident. I aim the final knife at the juicy delicacy that sat in the middle. Sure enough, I hit it so accurately that the three of them scurry away in fright. I laugh a bit as I come down from the tree. I flip open my device and hold the speaker while telling Max and Ash what I did. They respond in happy cries and cheers. I tell them to meet me back at the hut to eat our meal.
I may have not lost hope after all.
