Chapter 19: April And May
After about 30 minutes, we arrive. I lead her inside, and I already see Max and Ash starting a fire. "MAX! ASH!" I yell in delight, hugging them both. They spot the horse behind me and show me their horses. Max's is mottled and Ash's is pure chestnut. "I named mine Jasper and Ash named her's Chess. You should call yours Coal!" he exclaims.
"Okay Max, Coal it is." I respond.
"What happened to Coal?" Ash asks.
"Oh, Sparrow did," I reply.
"Oh no! Is she okay?"
"Oh yeah, she's alright."
"Whats in your pack?" she asks.
"I dunno. Lets look."
I reach for the zipper and pull it open. I then dump the contents out in a pile. Ash dumps her's into a pile, and Max dumps the pack that Ash got for him while he was passed out.
In my pile, there is an empty canteen, two bowls, some iodine, a half finished roll of gauze, and a sleeping bag that is too small for me. I also have an array of knives.
Ash has a few more plastic bowls and plates, 2 pouches of dried fruits, a empty canteen, a first aid kit with burn cream and bandages, rope, and two sleeping bags that we can fit in. She also shows us her bow and arrows.
Max has the smallest pack, and all it had was plastic wrap, one sword, 4 small gadgets and an odd syrup thing.
I grab the little gadgets in curiosity. There is a little red and green light and a speaker.
"IT IS A COMMUNICATION AND TRACKER DEVICE!" I yell.
We each take one, and keep the leftover in my pack just in case. The little gray panel shows us where the other panels are, and we can also talk through them. I clip mine onto my knife belt pouch. In total, we had enough supplies to last us about 2 days. Before it got dark, we took the horses out and rode around until we found a few squirrels and nuts. After getting those, we also caught a small turkey thing. Jasper looked really dehydrated and tired, so Max brought him back to the hut. The two of them started to cook the nuts, turkey, and squirrel while Ash, Chess, Coal, and I went out to head to find a stream. I was still soaking wet from the bloodbath, and so Coal was trying to lick the water off me. It was becoming really dark, but the horses continued onward.
I was tired, and I thought I was hallucinating when a saw a head of black hair and icy blue eyes peer out of the bushes. I rub my eyes, but when I open them again, I see the same head from the tree on the other side of me. How was this possible? "Ash! Do you see that?" I whisper.
"Yeah..."
"Shh..."
I slowly creep up toward the bushes and push the leaves out of the way, but no one was there. Suddenly, two girls jump down from a tree. Both looked the same. They both were wielding axes. I step back and pull out my dagger.
"Put. The. Dagger. Down." The fourteen year old on the right firmly demands.
I drop my weapon as asked and they do too.
They both look at each other and put theirs down too.
"I'm April. This is May. We are twins." the same girl says. "We live in separate Districts. I'm in 5 and she's in 6. It was just a coincidence that we were both chosen. We were separated at birth. When I told her the news, she told me that the same thing happened to her." she concludes. "We just need some help. Can you show us where we can find bandages? Our little brother, August, has a really severe deep cut in his leg. He's only 12. He lives with me, in 5." May, the one on the left states. "Its so weird how all three of us were chosen. May and I were thinking the games are rigged. But still, can you help August?"
I think about it for a second. I look at Ash and she nods.
"Okay. I'll do it." I respond.
I get on Coal and Ash gets on Chess. April sits with Ash and May hops onto Coal. We ride into the distance.
When we finally reach our destination, I tie Chess and Coal to a tree and head inside the small hut, similar to ours. Inside the hut is a young boy, groaning in pain while clutching his shin. The only light source is a dim candle in the middle of the hut. A crate sits in the corner, and a small box is next to the boy, August. Ash and I immediately rush toward the struggling child. The color drained from his face in pain made me wince. Ash talks to the boy in a hushed tone, comforting him and patting his head, while I try to find supplies we can use. I spot the box and immediately try to rummage through it. It is filled to the rim with medical supplies. My aunt was a medic, so I learned the basics when I was a child.
"There's so many supplies! Why do you need our help?" I ask.
"We don't know how to use them," April responds.
I sigh and grab a small container that sat on the brim of the box. I open it and take a handful of the cream and smear it on his shin. I then find a syringe and some liquid syrup thing. Taking one look at the greenish orange goo, I knew what it was. It was a healing liquid that grandma would make whenever Max got hurt while playing. She mixed some berries and mint leaves and it always worked like a charm. I dump it into the syringe and quickly inject it into his leg. He screams in pain, but then it fades away. I pull out a small roll of bandages and gauze from the bottom and wrap it around his shin.
"Replace the gauze whenever you see the crimson red bleeding through," I finish. They thank us greatly and May slips something into my bag. I ignore it and head outside. We feed the horses and head back to the hut.
We reach the hut in safety and greet Max. We eat some fruit and each one of us takes a small strip of beef jerky. There is only one more water bottle left and a pack of fruit. Tomorrow, we have to get more supplies.
We stare into the sky, hoping we won't die.
