Chapter 16: The Interviews
I awake with a start, panting like a dog. I immediately grab a water bottle on the nightstand, and chug it. When I get out of bed to recycle the empty bottle, I notice an engraving under the cap. It said "Good Luck Seeds" in capital letters. I was freaked out. How did Sparrow get in my room? I knew it was her, she was the only one that called me Seeds. I shook the feeling off as I throw the bottle. I comb out all the knots in my hair quickly and get into a large gray sweater and I don't even bother to check the size. I also slip into some deep blue leggings. I yawn again, clutching the sleeves and walking out of the room. The second my foot steps out, I feel the prep team sweep me off my feet and carry me to Shade's stylist room. "But I'm hungry!" I wail. Drea laughs and pulls out a energy bar and crams it into my mouth. They finally set me down. I am slipped into a silk robe and am pushed into a chair. Drea does my makeup, Tori does my nails, and Lia does my hair. I feel tugging on my head, my hands throb, and that little brush Drea uses tickles my nose so much that I eventually take a 5 minute sneezing and laughing break. Based on the colors and intricate designs they use, I can tell what element my dress will be like already: earth.
When the fake nails and crazy hair is finished, I am shoved into a small dark room where I wait for Shade. He comes out of the darkness after a few minutes, carrying a box. He tells me not to remove the black cloth on top of the dress, so I change into it, being careful not to ruin my own surprise. When I come back out, he closes my eyes as he reveals the dress. I then open my eyes. It was beautiful. It was strapless and was faded perfectly, although it was a bit tight. It started yellowish and faded into a green-brown as it reached the ground. There were 4 cuts; two on each side; by my waist. There was also a green vine that acted like a strap and ran down the whole dress. Bright pink roses danced across the vine, not bloomed yet. When I asked him why, the first thing he said was "puppies". I smile because I love puppies (like who doesn't) and the flowers bloom, turning the entire dress from earthy colors to rose colors. My dress was now light pink. Suddenly, Shade says "Sparrow" and my dress turns red and so does the flowers. I am enraged. Then he whispers, "you're mother" and my dress, along with the bloomed flowers, turn deep blue in sadness. Then he says, "the hunger games" and my dress turns black and white, showing fear. He then says, "Reality" and my dress turns back to normal, the flowers not bloomed. I loved it. Before I could thank him, I am shoved into a room with Trina. "Lovely, let's begin. We only have an hour. Okay, put these on," she commands while handing me a pair of like, 6 inch high heels. I put them on. They are made the same way as the dress. Trina first teaches me how to walk in the shoes. When I master that, we practice the interview.
"So how does it feel to be a tribute for the games?" Trina asks in her Caesar voice.
"Awesome! I will win, I know it." I lie. My dress turns black and white, in fear. Trina realizes I am lying. She spots the detector on my ankle. I lift up my dress in that spot, and this time, when I lie, the dress stays the same. It doesn't turn black and white. Trina says that if I don't want to reveal any secrets, I could just remove the dress from my ankle, and it wouldn't budge. After more practicing, Trina tells me to meet Max backstage. Sparrow is scowling at us. She was eating grapes, wearing a golden dress. I scowl back. She smugly smiles and laughs a bit. I roll my eyes playfully and ignore her. The first two go by quickly.
"WELCOME EVERYONE, TO THE TWENTY FIFTH ANNUAL HUNGER GAMES INTERVIEWS! MAY WE ALL WELCOME TO THE STAGE, THE BRAVE, THE MIGHTY.... ASHLEY HAMPTON!" Caesar announces playfully. Ash confidently enters and pumps her fist in the air. I don't really listen; probably because my prep team is pampering my ears with so much powder that I can't hear. Sooner or later, it's my turn. I wave gently and apply equal balance to both feet so I don't trip. Slowly but surely, I make it to the plush chair. I have a seat, and my dress turns black and white, showing fear. "I see that you're scared...." Caesar announces. "No no, it's just the matter of being in such a HUGE audience," I return. "Well, let's talk about your score. Very nice, isn't it?" He asks.
"Well yes, it's such a great honor!" I chirp. I plaster a fake smile on my face. Caesar takes one look at my dress and marvels. "Very fabulous Chia! I like it!" he hoots. "Oh, why thank you!" I reply, my dress turning rosy pink. The flowers bloom and everyone gasps. "Wow!" Caesar sighs. "I would like to thank Shade, my stylist!" I sing. Shade grunts up and smiles with a round of applause. After that, Caesar asks about my mother and father. My dress turns deep blue.
"Um Caesar, my father left the world when I was 8. My mother ran away two years later. Savanna took care of me, Max soon becoming my biggest priority. Now, we provide in different ways to the family."
"May I ask how your father died?"
"Oh uh um, my father.. well he... I guess.. he um--"
BUZZ!
"Oh, well! Times up folks! Next up!"
I sadly smile and trudge off the stage. Max is waiting for me. He gives me a hug and says, "I'll tell them. Don't worry." and marches off. I run off into a random direction for 5 minutes until I reach our suite. I slam the door to my room and hop in the shower.
I scrub and scrub all the golden paint off my body. I wash myself until all the team's designs are gone, and the only effort left is the slight golden streaks in my hair, which I can't get out. I eventually give up and take the hair coloring as a memory and blessing. I pull myself into a pair of random pajamas and grab something from the refrigerator. Chugging it down, I jump into bed. I have to get enough sleep tonight if I wanted to be ready for the games tomorrow.
With that thought mingling in the back of my head, I drift off into a deep sleep.
