Chapter 32
Saturday 25th December, 1976
"Merry Christmas!" I shouted, kicking the marauders door open as I entered, my hands preoccupied with holding presents.
I was met with groans and mumbled curses, but no one got out of bed. I rolled my eyes; of course they would demand me get up early and go to their dorm, only to refuse to get up when I actually arrived.
I sighed, grabbing my wand out of my pocket and giving it a quick flick, making all the bed curtains in the room fling open and forcing the four boys to deal with the sun currently shining on their faces.
"Oi! Y/n, close the curtains!" Sirius complained.
I was about to say no when I gasped, spinning around to stare at Remus's bed where Sirius's voice came from.
I pointed at them both somewhat accusingly. "You! And you! Together! In bed!"
"Really? I didn't notice," Remus muttered, rolling on his side to avoid the sun.
I fist pumped the air. "Finally!"
A pillow was thrown at me in return.
When all of the marauders eventually got up, we all sat in a circle on the floor and gave presents to each other. I got a muggle book from Remus, Gryffindor styled earrings from Peter, all my favourite Honeydukes sweets in a hamper basket from Sirius, and a framed photo of all five of us from James, as well as a Gryffindor scarf because someone lost my old one. Sirius pointedly looked away sheepishly when I wrapped the scarf rather aggressively around my neck, glaring at him all the while.
Once we'd finished the unwrapping and giving of gifts, we went downstairs to met up with the girls, another round of presents starting. Lily also gave me a muggle book, the sequel to the one Remus got me, while Mary gave me some perfume and Marlene got me a bracelet. I quickly went up to my dorm afterwards, as did the others, and we all got changed.
I put on the necklace Regulus gave me, smiling as I twirled it around in my fingers, reading the engraved initials on the back of it. I grabbed Regulus's gift and placed it carefully in my pocket before leaving my dorm, meeting back up with the marauders and the girls and going to the Great Hall with them.
We sat down, mouths watering as we stared at the food before us. The food was more extravagant than normal, since it was Christmas day, and I eagerly started piling my plate with food.
"Wow, Y/n, your necklace is so pretty," Lily noted. "Where did you get it?"
The others turned to look at me in interest, or rather the necklace around my neck.
"It was a Christmas present," I said.
"From who?" James asked curiously.
My eyes darted to the Slytherin table and found Regulus who was talking to his friends. His eyes did a quick sweep of the Great Hall, fixing on me when he spotted me looking. He smiled and I felt my own smile fighting to surface.
I turned back to my brother. "Nunya."
James scoffed but didn't press for details. Instead, the conversation turned to the gifts we'd gotton for Christmas, and what we were going to do for New Years Eve. James and Sirius, unsurprisingly, wanted to throw a party.
"You always want to throw a party," Marlene complained. "why can't we just have a calm night in for once?"
"Because that's boring," Sirius stated, "and you, Marlene, are anything but boring."
Marlene rolled her eyes. "Flattery will get you no-where Black."
"Worth a shot."
After we'd all eaten, we went back to the Gryffindor Common Room and started a very competitive Exploding Snap tournament.
I was taken out of the running fairly quickly, unable to compete with Remus's swiftness, Sirius's aggressiveness, or Lily's competitiveness. I didn't mind though, having already decided this was a perfect opportunity to sneak away and find Regulus.
Which is exactly what I did. Well, in fairness, Regulus was the one who found me, but I had been trying to find him. I was walking through the halls, wondering whether Regulus would be at our special spot when I felt two hands wrap around my waist and pull me off course.
"Merry Christmas Y/n," Regulus whispered into my ear.
I grinned, turning around in his arms to face him. Regulus looked so beautiful, the ends of his black hair curling just above his eyes. It was getting longer than I'd ever seen it before, though a far cry from Sirius's hair length.
"Merry Christmas Regulus," I whispered back.
The boy in front of me smiled, staring at me as if mesmerised. We weren't doing very well in the stealth department, though, as I realised as we were standing in the middle of a hallway where anyone could walk through.
"We should probably move somewhere more private," I suggested.
Regulus raised an eyebrow. "Really, Y/n? Very eager aren't you?"
"Oh shut up, I just meant because we're out in the open-"
"Mhm, sure you did."
I rolled my eyes in a show of frustration that was ruined when I failed to fight back the smile spreading across my face. Regulus himself was grinning, and at the sight of my smile his grin widened in accomplishment.
We did eventually go to our spot, where I gave him his present, nerves bouncing inside me. It wasn't sentimental like his had been and I hoped he didn't take it as a sign that I didn't put much thought into it. I put a lot of thought into it.
Regulus unwrapped the box, gently taking the silver and green watch into his hands as he looked at it. He held it so carefully, like it was his most prized possession, and slowly, ever so slowly, his lips curved into a smile. He looked up at me, delight clear in his eyes and he held out the watch to me.
"Would you like to do the honours?"
I smiled, taking the watch from his hand and putting it around his wrist, my hands lingering there once the job was done. Regulus moved his hand with his watch to my chin, tilting my face to his as he softly pressed his lips against mine. I melted into the kiss instantly, feeling myself lean into his touch as his hand brushed my jaw to cup my cheek.
When he pulled back, there was a soft smile on his face. "Thank you for the gift."
"You're welcome."
Regulus's gaze fell to my neck where his gift to me lay, and his smile widened. He looked up at me, eyes shining and immediately brought me back into a kiss, like he couldn't get enough of me.
We spent the rest of the day in our spot together, relishing in the fact that we didn't hate one another anymore. It was nice, spending time with him without worrying that he either a) hated me or b) would never like me. Now that both those thoughts were proved wrong, I could spend time with Regulus and fully enjoy everything about him.
About an hour before dinner was due to start Regulus and I bid goodbye to one another, knowing our friends would get suspicious if we spent too much time together. Still, when I arrived at the Gryffindor Tower I was feeling down about leaving him.
"Y/n, a moment please?" Lily asked when I got back.
I got up, following Lily as she led me to a secluded part of the Common Room, wondering what she wanted to talk about.
"What's up?" I asked.
"What's going on between you and Regulus?"
The question caught me off guard for a second, and then I was cursing at myself internally. Not even a day after being together and Lily already figured it out? Regulus and I had zero chance of keeping this a secret if Lily figured it out in less than 24 hours.
"Er- no?"
Lily frowned. "What?"
"Exactly."
Lily gave me a look. I pointedly looked away, determined not to spill my secrets. Unfortunately Lily had an unnerving skill to get confessions out of people, and eventually she managed to drag the words out of my mouth.
"We're dating."
Lily gasped, then fist pumped the air. She always liked being right. Instantly she was upon me, demanding more information on how it happened, and since she already knew we were dating I didn't see any reason to keep the rest of it from her.
"And then we spent all day together," I said, unable to help the dreamy sigh that escaped me. "He's so pretty. And funny. And a really good kisser."
Lily stifled a laugh, grinning at how head of heels I was for my boyfriend. My boyfriend. I liked the sound of that.
"You're hopeless," she said.
"Thank you," I replied.
We grinned at one another, and then I felt something hit the side of my face, making me stumbled. I looked to the pillow on the floor at my feet and then at Sirius whose arm was outstretched, as if he just threw something.
"Oh, you're dead."
By the end of my attack Sirius was curled up on the floor, hands covering his face as he begged for mercy. Soon he would realise I was a merciless creature.
"Moony," Sirius wailed. "Help me! Please!"
Remus sighed from his seat on the couch, book in hand. "Don't kill my boyfriend, Y/n."
"But he threw a pillow at me. He deserves to die."
"No! No, please! I'm too beautiful to die!" Sirius cried.
"Y/n," Remus said shortly.
I grumbled, dropping the pillow and walking away from Sirius, muttering under my breath about how Remus was absolutely biased.
When Sirius had recovered from, and I quote, his 'traumatic experience', we all left to go to the Great Hall. The feast was magnificent, the food looking like heaven. We all sat down and started demolishing the feast, all the while talking about the new couple, Sirius and Remus.
"Hey, remember that time Sirius and Remus sat down in Defence Against the Dark Arts and glitter exploded from their desk and you all got detention?" I asked.
"Yeah, that detention was horrible," Peter commented. "Spending time with Slytherins is not fun."
Sirius scoffed. "Of course it's not. They're Slytherins."
"Anyway," I said, clearing my throat. "That was actually me."
The other stared at me in surprise and, in Sirius's case, betrayal. He placed a hand on his heart, as if wounded, and collapsed against Remus, who in turn shoved him off.
"How could you do that to us Y/n?" Sirius asked. "I thought we were friends!"
I rolled my eyes at his dramatics. "We are. I did that so you and Remus would have detention together. Alone."
"Oh," Sirius said. "Well in that case, thank you for the very valiant effort."
I snorted. "You're welcome."
After dinner, we stayed up at the Gryffindor Common Room a bit longer, but eventually decided an early night would be good for us, especially since we'd had a late on last night. I crawled into my bed, and as I tried to fall asleep I thought about today and everything that had happened.
It had been a very good Christmas.
