Chapter 18
Tuesday 18th November, 1976
A week had passed since the study picnic. I thought about it often, possibly more often than I should have, but I didn't think about that.
It was lunch and I was walking into the Gryffindor Common Room when I overheard Lily and Remus talking. They hadn't noticed me yet and continued talking like no-one was listening, when, in fact, I was.
"I like him a lot. Like, a lot, but I don't want to ruin our friendship. We brushed off the kiss we had on Halloween, calling it a drunk mistake, but it doesn't feel like a mistake to me. I only wish Sirius felt the same," Remus confessed.
Immediately I knew this was not a conversation I should eavesdrop on and walked towards them, making my presence known when I spoke.
"You talking about Sirius?" I teased.
"You shouldn't eavesdrop," Remus scolded half-heartedly.
I rolled my eyes, waving him off. "That's why I'm here talking to you instead of hiding in the corner listening. Anyway, you were talking about Sirius, right?"
Remus sighed, looking down dejectedly as he slowly nodded. For someone who just confessed they liked someone, they didn't seem too happy about it.
"Yeah," he murmured quietly. "It's Sirius."
"I'll be your wingman," I stated. "Or wingwoman, I guess."
Remus let out a humourless laugh, rubbing his face with his hands. "There's no reason for you to do that. Me and Sirius are not an option. Like I said before, if there's a possibility to ruin our friendship, I don't want to do anything about it. Sirius wouldn't even want someone like me, anyway."
I sighed, frustrated at Remus's low self-esteem. Couldn't he see how in love Sirius was with him? Didn't he notice the way Sirius looked at him? Because the rest of us certainly did.
"I think doing nothing would ruin your relationship," I said, "because it's obvious Sirius is head over heels for you."
"He's not," Remus said flatly.
"Let me prove you wrong then."
Before Remus or Lily had a chance to stop me, I was heading towards the boy's dormitories, walking up the stairs until I got to the marauder's dorm. I opened the door and walked in, to James and Sirius's displeasure.
"Oi! Y/n, you can't just walk in here without knocking! We could have been changing," James yelled.
I shuddered at the thought. "What a horrible sight that would be."
Sirius threw a pillow at me in response, one I barely missed. I glared at the boy who grinned back, causing me to roll my eyes.
"What were you guys talking about?" I asked innocently.
"Nunya," both boys said in unison.
"Rude," I muttered under my breath.
I moved across the dorm and sat on the edge of James's bed, trying to figure out how I could wrangle a confession out of Sirius. James, who was also sitting on his bed and was still miffed about me entering his dorm without knocking, shoved me harshly, and I toppled off his bed and onto the floor. I glowered, scrambling upright and about to lunge at him when Sirius stepped between the two of us.
"Don't think I won't take you down too," I warned him.
"I'd like to see you try," Sirius taunted with a smirk.
I was vividly reminded of Regulus saying the same thing to me two weeks ago when I first proposed our alliance. The memory of him made me cheeks heat up, especially when I realised I got the reminder from Sirius, his brother.
I cleared my throat, trying to focus on the Black brother in front of me and not the younger Black brother that always seemed to slip into my mind.
"Remus wouldn't condone acts of violence like that," I said slyly.
I watched as Sirius's face visibly brightened at the mention of Remus, and it was so obvious he liked Remus back that I was starting to doubt how smart Remus actually was.
"Say, what do you guys think of Remus anyway?"
James scrunched up his nose at my question, something he usually did when he was confused.
"He's one of our best mates..." James said, trailing off in befuddlement.
Sirius was glaring at me; it seemed he'd caught onto my plan. That wouldn't stop me though. I was determined to make Sirius admit his feelings and get him and Remus together. It would benefit us all if they did, really.
"And Sirius?" I prodded. "What about you?"
James's eyes widened and he let out a small "oh," when he realised my plan. He looked between Sirius and me hesitantly, unsure what to do.
"It seems like you already know," Sirius answered through gritted teeth.
"What do you mean?" I asked innocently.
Sirius let out a frustrated sigh, throwing his hands up in the air. "I fancy him, okay?"
"Okay," I agreed happily.
Both boys looked at me, confused, and I smiled at them before leaving their dorm.
"Hey, wait, Y/n- "Sirius called, but I closed the door, muffling his words.
Remus kept his eyes on me the whole time I walked down the steps, and as soon I was in close enough range, he was upon me, gripping my arms in a panicked state.
"What did you say? What did you tell him? What did he say? Why do you look so happy?" Remus's ramble of questions was cut off when Lily gently pulled him away, an amused smile on her face.
"Don't worry, everything's fine," I said smugly. "Right now, though, I need to leave."
I sent Remus one last wink before exited the Common Room, walking along the corridors as I thought. Already, a plan was forming in my mind, a genius one, when suddenly my mind wasn't focused on it anymore. It was focused on the Slytherin pureblood with black hair and grey eyes that had just turned the corner.
Regulus's eyes found mine and he raised an eyebrow when he noticed my eager posture. I was still excited after hearing both Remus and Sirius's confessions, and that seemed to be showing. He slowed to a stop in front of me, observing my excited posture curiously.
"What's gotton you so happy?" he asked.
"I'm playing cupid," I announced proudly.
"With who?"
I opened my mouth, about to say Sirius and Remus, when I remembered who I was talking to. Would mentioning his brother sour his mood? Should I lie and say someone else, or just stop the conversation altogether? I wasn't sure what to say, and Regulus noticed my hesitance, scowling.
"It has something to do with my brother, doesn't it?"
I winced. "Is it that obvious?" Regulus gave me a blank stare. "Yeah, okay it's between Remus and Sirius."
Regulus scoffed, crossing his arms. I sighed, nudging his shoulder with my own, causing his eyes to latch onto my shoulder that just touched his.
"Come on, you've got to have seen the longing glances they send to each other," I said.
"I mean, I guess," he muttered. "They hit it off quite well at the Halloween party, I assumed they got together after that?"
"Nope," I answered popping the 'p'.
Regulus shook his head, seemingly almost disappointed, before the expression left his face and his mask was once again in place.
"So, what are you planning for them then?" he asked me.
I smirked, looking around quickly before whispering my plan to him. He snorted at the end of it, shaking his head again.
"You're hopeless," he stated.
"Hey, it's a good idea!" I defended, glaring at the boy in front of me.
"If you say so."
"I do say so."
"Mhm."
"What's that mhm for?"
Regulus let out a soft laugh, similar to the one he made on our Hogsmeade trip, and similar to then, I found myself wanting to catch it in a bottle and hide it away to listen to later. What was wrong with me?
"It's an okay idea, but there's a lot you're leaving up to chance," he explained.
"Well duh, I only just came up with it," I retorted. "I haven't had much of a chance to fine tune things."
Regulus smiled slightly. "In that case, I'm sure you'd make a fine cupid."
"Why thank you," I replied mockingly, smiles breaking out on both our faces.
We stood there for a moment, silence surrounding us. It wasn't necessarily awkward, but I knew if we stayed like that for much longer it would be.
"Well, I gotta go, y'know, figure out my plan," I said, gesturing to the direction I had previously been walking in.
Regulus nodded his head.
"Yeah, sure. See you later Potter," he said, moving to walk in the opposite direction.
"Bye Black," I called over my shoulder.
A small smile was on my face as I turned the corner, that was until I felt two hands grab me and slam me against a wall.
