Island 8. Celeste And Widget
Somehow, Celeste managed to take her captured boat from the dock and sailed herself. But the waters were never ending and she had no idea of directions whatsoever after staying in the ocean for so many days. Her starving stomach was of no help.
The skies were turning darker and she knew that a storm was all due. The frequency was an issue. It didn't look like a normal storm as well. The velocity of winds was also quite wild, she had no idea how she'll be able to help herself now. Suddenly, she remembered how she came here. It was stormy that day as well...
"You!" A shrill voice shouted.
"Where am I?" She asked, totally clueless.
"This..." The villagers undoubtedly understood whatever she was saying. Strange enough, she could do the same. Ever since she came here, there seemed zero language barriers.
After talking with them, she got to know her situation. She was in an impoverished village in Asia during the eighteenth century. But, it was no ordinary village. Last full moon, something strange happened. The people went to celebrate someone's wedding in another village, leaving few people behind. When the returned, the people were mysteriously missing. There was no trace whatsoever of struggle or anything that could make it look like the work of jungle bandits.
"There are ghosts!" Someone shouted. According to some, the village was haunted by malevolent ghosts, who were now keeping everyone to leave the village. Someone even said that Celeste won't be able to leave as well, if this problem persists. Another adventure. What would she do now?
She decided to take care of this matter by investigating the ring she found. It was where she was laid down when she came here. Strangely, it was the same place where the ghosts first appeared.
It was near the village border, adjoining the jungles, beach and village. A local was there with her, who told her that Two British nationals were killed by a ferocious tiger in this place few weeks before. This incident was followed by several other tiger attacks, and many deaths. So, the British sent someone named Widget to investigate.
"Maybe the Nature is angry with us and wants to punish us..." The local whispered, but, Celeste heard it nonetheless.
After walking few minutes, they meet two other people, one of them too fashionable for her taste. The fashionable one introduced himself as Ashton, a British guide. Of course, the other one was Widget. They decided to travel together.
Just a few seconds after they set off, they notice that Ashton wasn't following them so, they go back. Ashton was nowhere. He had disappeared and the local believed that a wild animal just took him away. Unconvinced Celeste and Widget still continue their investigation.
"Do you think a tiger came and took him away?" Widget whispered.
"With no sound whatsoever? Who'd believe that." Celeste whispered back.
"You know, something similar happened few days ago. The locals continue to say it's the work of a tiger."
"It's unconvincing but we don't have solid grounds..." Celeste started to continue but stopped as the local stopped in his way.
"A tiger's coming. We need to go back."
"This is weird! No matter how you look at it!" Widget said frustratingly.
"A tiger came and took Ashton away in few seconds but we didn't know and now he's sensing things?"
"This is suspicious. Perhaps, we should go with someone else." Widget said and Celeste agreed. The next day, a lady named Leila accompanied them.
She told them a story of how few friends came to the nearby village to tour. There was a guesthouse there, to stay which was owned by a man named DS. He was a guide who agrees to lead them the next day to the core area, where tigers live, for hunting. That very night, DS disappeared and his decapitated body was found in the nearby swamp the next day.
"We're nearing the swamp too. Maybe, we can find the body still there. The tigers do that sometimes, though it'd be dangerous." She looked back for approval, which she got. Widget nodded as he held the gun inside his pockets. He had already given one to Celeste and asked if she knew how to use. She had just smiled and accepted the weapon.
The come across the swamp where the lifeless body lay. The smell rotting like the corpse itself, but, it wasn't that old so the marks were visible. Widget bent down and Celeste crouched as well.
"Something isn't right..." Celeste muttered.
"I already started to get suspicious about the real cause of the recent deaths in the jungle. This is no tiger." Widget said confidently after awhile, as he was an animal expert and recognized that DS' death was not the work of a tiger or any other wild animal.
Warned by Widget, the group decided to leave the jungle. Before they depart, they realize that there was another similar rotting smell. The smell of human flesh. Following the smell, they, soon find Ashton's decapitated body by another lake. Celeste' stomach churned and the urge to vomit came. She felt nauseous.
"Are you okay?" Leila asked.
"It's not done by tiger." Widget shouted out loud, not knowing himself what he wanted to convey.
The jungle suddenly grow silent.
"A silent jungle means that the danger is near..." Leila whispered. Some footsteps are heard and the trio were soon confronted by three tigers on the way. The group was saved by a mysterious man wearing a cloth around his mouth. It was the same local from yesterday. He claimed to live in the jungle, to which Leila nods in confirmation.
"He's too well informed about the jungle. If he's with us, we can continue..." Leila whispered. Celeste agreed and Widget was silent. But, the local denied saying he has something to do in the meantime.
On their continued way out of the jungle, the trio find the road blocked by rocks due to the landslide caused by rain. The local showed up again and agreed to lead them out of the jungle.
He appeared to be very knowledgeable about the jungle and it's history. Too knowledgeable. Celeste, who was now more curious about the mysterious deaths, asked him if he knew what was behind those deaths. He responded by telling them a story about a crazy tour guide in this jungle, who used to lead tourists to the wrong places just to have them killed by wild animals. The people in the nearby villages later caught him and beat him to death but his ghost remained in the jungle and continued to kill tourists. None of the trio believed in this story.
They reach near another lake where they find another body. Celeste suddenly notices that Leila didn't have a reflection in the water. She nudged Widget and he looked her way, asking 'what's the matter' with his eyes. She pints out to the lake and Widget looks at Celeste. Gulping he holds her hands, hoping to find it a dream but the feel of her hand was real, and so was the current situation. He immediately realized that the story told earlier was true and that Leila was in fact the ghost of the tour guide mentioned in the story.
Widget shows the lake to the local who understands with his knowing glaze, a little surprised, proving to him that Leila was a ghost and was indeed responsible for all the mysterious deaths and missing people. They decide to escape the jungle once and for all.
"I think I'd need some timbers..." Widget says out loud.
"What for?" Celeste aaked.
"To draw something..."
"I'll get them." Leila said and disappeared in the jungle. She returned to the well with timbers and upon finding nobody there, she realizes that the trio have run away.
Leila stands there frozen. She started to get flashbacks revealing that the villagers did not kill her but instead, took her to the core area where she was brutally beaten up and then thrown in front of a hungry tiger that mauled her to death. Leila opened her eyes, coming back to present day where her ghost now standing by the lake, expressed her immense anger and hatred for tourists who come to the jungle to hunt wild animals and disrupt their well being without any regrets. This was the sole reason why she was misleading and then killing the tourists.
"What do we do in order to get everything right..." A tired Celeste appeared before her. In truth, they hadn't fled but, were hiding just above the branches, with the help of the local.
"You can't right what's already wronged beyond repair! Just leave this place and never come back to the jungle to hunt... I promise I won't cause trouble as long as the jungle is safe..." Her voice echoed.
"Very well..." The local said as he directed everyone out.
The next day, a fence was surrounding the jungle in hopes that everything will be fine. In the evening, Widget who was now fully aware of what caused those mysterious deaths in that jungle, successfully completed his report in which, he deemed the deaths as a result of tiger attacks. He reluctantly decided not to disclose the real cause of those deaths to anyone since no one will believe him but instead credited Leila, the local and Celeste, as the main contributor to the report.
Meanwhile, in the jungle, Leila encountered a new group of tourists with hunting bows. She smiled and had one of them killed by a tree branch...
