the sky slowly started to darken from bright blue into black, with faint illuminations of clouds setting into the sky. gwendolyn looked down at her phone and bit her lip. time kept on ticking, the sky grew darker, and she still hadn't seen karla.
something doesn't feel right.
but to gwendolyn, it didn't make sense. she started her day out like usual: waking up and loving on karla, watering her plants, and bothering miles to make something for breakfast.
she bit her lip. "i'll just call her." so, she clicked on karla's name and held the phone up to her ear.
ring... ring... ring... ring...
"hello?"
gwen sighed in relief. "karla! i've been worrying about you all da—"
"this is karla's ringtone. if you're hearing this, try and call me at another time. merci."
(thank you.)
"oh." gwendolyn felt her face burn red. "it's okay, it's okay! she's completely fine."
suddenly, the soft sprinkle of rain hit the ground, snapping gwendolyn out of her trance.
"i'll just set the plants outside and wait," murmured gwendolyn.
gwendolyn quietly hummed to herself as she went around the house to gather her new plants. some scattered in the kitchen, most in karla and her room, and one singular plant inside miles' room.
"hey miles?" gwendolyn said.
"mhm?" the said man was sprawled out on his bed on his phone wearing only sweatpants with his locs over his shoulder.
"ew. put some clothes on."
miles laughed. "you're the one that came in here in the first place, no?"
"shut it," gwendolyn remarked. "where's the plant i put in here?"
a moment of silence followed. "oh, that?" miles lifted a finger. "somewhere under those clothes."
gwen let her eyes follow miles' finger, which idly pointed to a mountain of dirty clothing in a pile. "what the— miles!" the freckled girl took a singular finger and poked within the pile until she felt cold cermanic against her finger. "no sunlight, no water, nothing?"
"nope," miles said, popping the 'p'. "totally forgot it was there to be honest, sorry."
"you are so... interesting," she sighed. "have you heard anything from karla yet?"
he set his phone on the bed. "nah, haven't seen her since this morning."
"oh gosh. you haven't texted her or anything?"
"i did earlier today, but no response." miles tapped his fingers against the bed. "maybe she's just super busy or something."
"mhm, yeah... maybe i'm thinking too much." gwendolyn knelt and grabbed the plant. "maybe i'm just overthinking."
"that's not bad, y'know." miles commented. "better safe than sorry, right?"
"yeah," answered gwen, unconvinced. "are you still making dinner tonight?"
miles nodded. "yep, i can. chicken and rice sound good? and you know i'll put seasoning in mine."
"sounds great," gwendolyn agreed and slid out of his room.
another flash of lighting and a low rumble of thunder almost shook the house, loudly telling gwendolyn to set the plants outside.
gosh, no need to rush. she thought.
the short-haired girl grabbed the nearest jacket by the door (which just so happened to be karla's), wrapped it around her body, and walked outside. diligently moving, she made sure each plant had its fair share of water soaking onto the plant's soil.
rain, i love rain.
yet, interrupting the girl out of her tranquility was the sound of her phone vibrating inside the jacket pocket. hurriedly, she bid the plants a quick goodbye and ushered inside.
not looking at the caller id, she answered. "hello, karla?"
the person on the other line was silent.
"this isn't karla," the woman said. "it's scarlett. did you forget about my voice after all?"
"oh." gwendolyn steadily took the phone away from her ear and looked at the caller's id.
and as sure as hell: SCARLETT read on the phone.
"w-well, uh... hey scarlett! why are you calling so late?"
on the other side, scarlett took a deep breath. "i just... i think there's something super important i need to tell you."
"really? what is it?"
"it's got something to do with karla. pretty serious in my opinion," stalled scarlett.
"then say it!" gwendolyn exclaimed. the said girl waited all day, or something anything about the whereabouts of karla— she couldn't just slip it up like this.
"there's someone out there, gwendolyn."
"huh, what?"
"there's been someone out there trying to get you. if you still don't get it, i'll say it outright."
"a stalker gwendolyn. your stalker."
"uhm... a... a stalker, you say?"
scarlett huffed. "believe every last word that comes out of my mouth, gwendolyn. they've been stalking you for months."
"and, well, how do you know this? i really doubt that this is actually tru—"
"gwendolyn," scarlett started, voice getting louder. "there's pictures, plenty of them. they've goten both you and karla in the frames of them."
"well let me see them," shot back gwendolyn. "stop getting so mad and calm down, you're getting to loud over the phone."
"gwen, i'm not. you just need to believe me about this."
"how can i believe you if you haven't given me any evidence at all?"
scarlett heavily sighed over the phone. "listen, i can send you the evidence, but i just need you to—"
suddenly, the front door opened again— a rush of cold air prickled against gwen's uncovered skin. the freckled girl whipped her head and glanced at whoever was standing in the doorway.
a weak smile spread on karla's face. "oh, ma fleur. it's lovely to see you."
yet as she spoke, large, dark red drops of blood splattered onto the floor.
