09 | ALWAYS BUSINESS

I move around the spaghetti on my plate, staring at my food absently as I hear my parent's voices in the distance.

"Jisung"

I look up to my father, "Yes?"

My dad looked down at his plate briefly before looking at me again and saying "I heard you were friends with The Lee's son?"

I froze, swallowing harshly as I look at my mom who looked at me with a soft smile. "I-I mean we know each other", my eyes go back to my dad who nods.

"Good, I'm having the Lee's over for dinner tomorrow night"

"What? F-For what?"

"Business son, why else?"

I look down and nod "Right" I mumble, going back to my food as my parents continue to converse with each other.

Business, it was always business with my father. At this point I think that's all his mind is on. Some parents would tell their kids they work hard for them—to give them the life they deserve but he doesn't.

I was a planned child of theirs but for all the wrong reasons. They wanted a perfect life, they wanted to be looked at as perfect. Not a single flaw. With that meant a perfect loving family.

We had no white picket fence but metaphorically we did. We had lots of money, we had no criminal record, we got along with all families, we were respectable to everyone and spoke politely. We were perfect.

That's what I was. I was the cherry on top of their plans of getting that spot. If they were a married couple with no kids, things would be different for them... questionable maybe in this town.

They didn't treat me harshly, but at the same time, I was hardly with them. They worked a lot and when we did talk it was about grades or something that had to do with their business. A business I had no care for and my father knew that.

He hated it at first, thought I would willingly want the company but I don't. He gave up on trying to force me into learning about it a few years ago but every now and then he would hint at his disappointment. He often would tell
his business partners that came for dinner that I was happily taking over the company when the time came and I would nod with a forced smile as I knew my dad would want.

"Jisung, sweetie, are you not hungry?" My mother's gentle voice was heard.

I look at her, "I'm not feeling so good, may I be excused?"

"Of course, wash up before bed" I nod and walk out of the dining room. I walk up the stairs and down the hallway that led to my room at the end of it.

I walk into my room which was filled with warm lighting. Closing the door and locking it behind me. I stood there with my back against the door, not feeling much as I stared off into space.

My eyes slowly go up to the stars on my ceiling, my thoughts going to the boy that randomly came into my life.

"Why does my life have to be so complicated, why can't I just like you?"
