"Hey, I'm Lorien, and I'm here at ELLE to take on the Song Association challenge. I feel pretty good about this — I've spent a lot of time studying music history, so let's see if that actually helps me out.
I've got 10 seconds to sing or rap a song with the word they give me — if I miss the timer, no points. Sounds simple enough, right? Also, if you haven't already, check out my album A Room Called Reveriev. Alright, let's get into it."
| WORD: FAIRY
'낭만적인 fairy-tale 사다리를 오를 때'
"It's a lyric from Sour Grapes, which is a song by Nami — an artist I helped produce her debut Korean album for." Lorien smiled slightly, recalling the experience. "It was an honor to work with someone who definitely had the same mindset I did at the start of my career."
He let out a soft chuckle. "I remember her telling me she hadn't planned on making music, but somehow she ended up being really good at it." He shook his head, his smile growing. "And I'm proud of her for that."
| WORD: STORE
'What do you have in store?
Type of girl that make me drop-dead on the floor
This the only girl that I love and adore
This the type of love that you can't ignore'
"D4vd has become an artist I recently got into," Lorien said with a thoughtful nod. "I think my little brother Kian introduced me to his music. He's been listening to him for a few years now — ever since his first release."
He paused for a moment, then added with a slight grin, "I do have to say, I've heard this song before. I think I've watched a few episodes of Invincible... well, a few meaning I'm on the second season, about to start the third." He laughed lightly. "But this song's catchy, so go stream it if you haven't."
| WORD: COFFEE
'We can get drinks
Or we could get coffee
Feeling pso good
At a bad party
We don't have to talk
I know that you want me'
"I had never really listened to Rosé sunbaenim before," Lorien admitted, "but I heard this song for the first time a few days ago." He paused, nodding slightly as if still thinking it over. "Seeing the different music styles that people from a group can put out is just so cool to me. Each one has their own distinct sound — something unique that they really go for."
He smiled thoughtfully. "It's amazing how each artist achieves something so different, and honestly, I hope it's something we see more of in the future. It's really interesting to hear what kind of music someone who was once in a band can create on their own. Their style could end up being completely different from how their group — or even their company — originally envisioned them."
| WORD: YOUNGER
'Back when we were younger
And our dreams were unexplored
We just needed each other
Couldn't ever ask for more
Oh, nobody had flaws
And nothing had a cause
When we were younger, hmm'
"This is a song my younger brother recently made and asked me to feature on," Lorien said with a fond smile. "His group has this thing where they create their own music and just put it out for the world to hear."
He paused, his expression softening. "I helped him produce this song after he told me what it was about. It's about our childhood — something that will always be some of our greatest memories. Those days... those were the good old days, when we were the happiest."
Lorien's smile faded slightly, his voice quieter. "Some part of me just wants to go back to that time — just to enjoy it and live in the moment again."
| WORD: BABY
'So every girl that I meet, yeah, this is what I say
Run, run, run away, run away, baby
Before I put my spell on you
You better get, get, get away, get away, darling
'Cause everything you heard is true
Your poor little heart will end up alone
'Cause Lord knows I'm a rolling stone
So you better run, run, run away, run away, baby'
"This is another song I've been listening to for months," Lorien said with a chuckle. "It's just been stuck in my head." He leaned back slightly, his tone becoming more reflective. "I remember listening to it when I was younger, and I couldn't quite understand what it meant. But now, as an adult, I get it. And maybe... maybe I shouldn't have listened to it as a child."
He laughed softly, shaking his head. "But it was just too catchy of a song. I'm honestly glad I rediscovered it as an adult."
| WORD: HEAVEN
'Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door
Whipped cream, 구름 손끝으로 쓸어
내 All Star 밑에 딛고 날아 sunset
넘 빠름? I'ma take it slow
"World by 17 Sunbaenim. I don't really talk about inspiration that much but there are definitely one of the K-pop groups I take inspiration from. I will admit that I have been a fan of them since 2018. That's when I first started listening to K-pop, but it wasn't all that often. I never really got into K-pop until I thought of producing in 2019. I actually had to start listening to more K-pop songs to get a vibe of what I should be producing for the K-pop groups I worked for.. But you could say that they were the first step I took to get into the industry."
| WORD: FRIDAY
'I picked you up on a Friday night
I was on time as usual, I don't mess around
I drove us up to the carnival
Popcorn, candy, my favorite
Would you like to dance with mе?
We had a lot of fun
But I know you're looking for someonе
That one, your one and only'
"Monica" by Imagine Dragons has been a song I've been slowly listening to over the last few days," Lorien said, his tone thoughtful. "There's just something about the song that's so catchy, but I can't quite put my finger on it."
He paused, a hint of excitement in his voice. "It's only a demo for now, but I'm really hoping they release the full version in the future. I'd definitely love to hear how it sounds when they do."
| WORD: DESIRE
'Straight to the middle of the fire, ain't no slowing down
태워 다 감당해 오직, I desire
너라는 붉은 태양 매일 잃어가지 이성의 초점
잠식되어 가 매일 본능의 열병'
"One of the newest songs on my album, Man on Fire, represents that burning desire to have someone — you know, that feeling you just can't shake," Lorien started, a slight blush creeping up his neck. "It's about wanting someone so badly, whether it's infatuation or just needing them in your life... or maybe it's more about wanting to hold on to them and never let go."
He cleared his throat, looking a little embarrassed. "Uh, maybe there's a deeper meaning to the song than I'm letting on, but... yeah, I think that's enough of an explanation for now. Just give it a listen if you're curious."
| WORD: SELFISH
'To handle all the selfish ways I'd spend my time without her
You're everything I want, but I can't deal with all your lovers
You're saying I'm the one, but it's your actions that speak louder
Giving me love when you are down and need another'
"I guess today's just really the feels for love," Lorien said with a shrug, his smile a little shy. "I think most of the songs that are coming to my mind are love songs. I don't really know why — there's just something about love songs that are so catchy."
He paused, his eyes drifting off as if reflecting. "Sometimes they're about heartbreaking love, sometimes about rediscovering love, and sometimes they're about love that makes you a little selfish." He chuckled, shaking his head. "It's all understandable, though, because love is like music — it can be interpreted in so many different ways."
Lorien looked up, his expression thoughtful. "I think everything can be interpreted differently, and that's what makes how we see the world so unique — it's all based on where we're at in life."
| WORD: LOSE
'I can't lose when I'm with you
How can I snooze and miss the moment?
You just too important
Nobody do body like you do
I can't lose when I'm with you
I can't just snooze and miss the moment
You just too important
Nobody do body like you do, you do'
"I've been listening to SZA ever since her first song released," Lorien said with a hint of nostalgia. "I don't think I've ever been a fan of someone's music for as long as I have for her. There's something about her introspection that I can just really vibe with."
He hesitated for a moment, his voice becoming more serious. "Maybe I don't tell people this that often because some people say her music is only for a certain type of person, but that's just not true. Music is universal — anyone can listen to whatever they want."
Lorien looked down, his hands slightly clasped together. "We shouldn't be so hateful about what people listen to or the music they connect with. I think the world needs to be a better place for that to happen."
| WORD: SORRY
'Said I'm alright, said I'll be fine
I'm sorry 거짓말이야
떠나지마, 저리 가지마 멀리
Yeah 그래, 나 솔직하게 다 말할래
너는 매일 어떤 사람 어떤 곳에
몇 번씩이나 뭘 하는지 널 생각해
Lost without you, baby'
"'Love Me Again' by V sunbaenim is one of the greatest songs about wanting to be loved that I've ever heard," Lorien said, his voice full of admiration. "It's such a simple song, but it holds so much meaning behind it — a depth that not many people will catch on the first listen, but they'll definitely understand the more they listen to it."
He leaned forward slightly, as if getting into the heart of the song's message. "It's about a man who just wants to be loved again by someone he feels he let go of too early, or maybe someone who betrayed him."
Lorien laughed softly, shaking his head. "And here I am again, talking about love songs. Am I on a roll or what?"
| WORD: REPLAY
'Replay, replay
설렘이지 뭐야
어쩜 그리 모른 척 웃어넘겨 (우우우우)
흔들리는 사이
보일 듯 말 듯 잔뜩 애태워'
"Round and Around is a song I helped produce alongside my good friend Zian who's a solo artist like myself," Lorien began, a fond smile crossing his face. "I hadn't really known what type of song she wanted to make until we got to the studio one day, and she just told me everything she had planned for it."
He chuckled softly, shaking his head. "She's definitely a firecracker of energy, which has brought a lot of excitement into my life. When you're around her, her energy just spreads — it's kind of contagious. You can't help but be happy when she's around."
Lorien's expression softened, looking off into the distance for a moment. "I think I'd love to help her produce songs again soon because when we're in the studio, we just seem to connect. We understand what the other person is trying to achieve, and it makes the whole process flow."
| WORD: HER
'Til I found her
I found her
Without her
I'm a mess (I'm a mess)
There was nothing 'bout that love that made sense, I was stressed
'Til I found her (oh, oh)'
"I only came to know this song after my younger brother published a cover of it on his group's YouTube channel," Lorien said, a soft smile playing on his lips. "It's a song about loving her — and 'her' could be any woman in your life. It could be your mom, your girlfriend, your wife, or any woman who's given you something you love and enjoy."
He paused, his expression growing more serious. "Life wouldn't happen without her making it happen. There's so much that women do that we often take for granted. We really should start appreciating them more, showing them that we truly care and that we need them."
| WORD: SURFACE
'End of this surface (Surface)
Just let the ride, make it drive, with its move (With its move)
(Whatever I wanna do)
Edge of this surface (Surface)
두둥실 떠다니는 파스텔 빛 groove
(Yeah just keep on doing things you wanna)'
"This is the title track, Horizon, from my newest album A Room Called Reverie," Lorien began, his tone shifting to something more reflective. "'Horizon' is about embracing transitions — about the obstacles and challenges that get in your way, and the connection you can have with someone, no matter how far you go in your career or in life."
He leaned forward slightly, his voice softening as he continued. "There are so many different meanings behind this song that people can interpret in their own ways. I want them to do that — I want people to interpret this song however it resonates with them, not just based on what I'm telling them."
Lorien gave a small smile, almost as if to himself. "It's not just about my interpretation, but about everyone's personal connection to it."
—————
Lorien smiled, looking at the camera with a mix of pride and humility. "I think I did a pretty good job at this," he said, then paused for a moment. "And before I go, don't forget to check out my new album, A Room Called Reverie. It's been a journey putting it together, and I'm proud of how it turned out. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it."
He gave a grateful nod, his smile widening. "Thank you, ELLE, for having me. Hopefully, I can do this again soon. Goodbye."
