Chapter Thirty-Nine

It took almost all day for Mara to find the place she was looking for, the place where she and Pan only knew of, if that's true. Since talking to James, after he left her in the meadow, she stood there for long moments until she decided to not go back to the camp just yet and went to find the place instead. She winded up in the shores of Cannibal Cove, then walked on the shores until she found the place.

She hadn't forgot about the name of the place she came up with. Moonsea. It also felt strange to think about it.

If James doesn't want to talk to her anymore, how will she able to cope with that? With him and her sharing the same tent and they're merely few feet apart from each other when they're sleeping. It would be awkward and strange, she'd want to talk to him if she keeps seeing him every morning and night or if she's only a feet from him.

It was mid evening, the sun was ready to set, the was filled with evening colors and bit of clouds. Mara was sitting on the beach, legs crossed, hands holding each other and she gazed at the ocean. Ahead was turning dark purple and blue, slowly turning night as the sun was on the horizon. It was setting at the other side of the Neverland, where she was was all shaded and in shadows, cold and breezy.

"Thought I'd find you here!" Pan's voice rang from the forest behind her. "Noticed you weren't at the camp and you weren't coming back"

He drew close and closer to her, she never looked back to see him and kept her gaze on the waters.

"You shouldn't wander around alone" he stood beside her. "You're still learning"

"I can take care of myself around here now" Mara assured.

"You don't seem to be in a cheerful mood" Pan sat down, "I thought this free day would brighten you as the boys"

Not James for sure, she thought. She wanted to avoid the thought of James. "Free day, huh? And yet, here you are, finding me and still watching over me in case I get myself killed. Certainly doesn't feel like it's free day" she joked.

It did made Pan chuckle. "Don't be all sulky again" he teased.

Mara smiled and said nothing. There was a small silence between the two, nothing but the waves crashing onto the shores and the winds blowing the trees behind them.

"You don't prefer go for a swim at the falls, be with your friends or train with James today?"

The falls was occupied, her friends were at the camp with James, he doesn't want to train her anymore just because she kissed him. She couldn't tell Pan about James because she assumed he wouldn't want anyone to know. Perhaps he was truly ashamed, she thought. "I prefer to be alone for today" she said, not truly honest, "haven't had this kind of moment for a while"

"Should I leave you alone then?" Pan questioned.

She had to admit, she didn't want him to leave. He was the only one around, she lost James, she still had Curly, Slightly and Tootles... and Pan too. "I don't mind you sticking around" she replied.

He did stuck beside her and didn't leave her alone, which she was glad for. Trying to avoid the silence and the thought of James, she wondered about something, still curious of Pan.

"How did you even find this place anyway?" She asked.

There wasn't a quick answer from him. "Just happened to... wind up here"

She wasn't sure if he was being honest. "It wasn't planned?" She glanced at him.

He merely shrugged, "You can say that" his eyes met her's.

"So..." she paused, "...who you were before you came to Neverland?"

Pan gazed at the ocean, laughed softly, "Have you already forgotten that I said I wouldn't share my past to anyone? Even if I trust you?"

"A little honesty wouldn't hurt you" she groaned, looked at the ocean as well.

"Truth can be painful sometimes. Never know when you're too honest with someone you're close with and they'll end up hurting you"

Then she wondered immediately, did someone hurt Pan before? "Who hurt you?"

"What?" He looked at her.

She met his gaze, "Who was the person you were close with hurt you?"

His brows furrowed. He seemed hesitant. "How would you know if I was ever hurt?"

He seemed to be avoiding away from honesty and drive her away from believing what she thinks. So, she merely shrugged, "I was just wondering. I suppose it's not true" she looked at the ocean.

If it is true, then she can understand why he isn't honest with everyone, prefers to keep his past in secret, be mysterious to avoid from everyone getting to know him, they might learn his weakness. If Mara was like him, which she kind of wished she did, she wouldn't be feeling this way.

"Maybe it is a good thing that you shouldn't be too honest with anyone, you might be trusting the wrong person, they'll end up hurting you, betray you... or leave you" James left her, she got too close with him and he left her.

"I imagine that happened to you many times" Pan guessed, "Here, no one can leave you"

He has no idea. She sighed, "I don't know... I doubt that"

"What makes you say that?" He was looking at her.

She should tell him, she wants to. "Well... James left me. My only true friend here in this place. He doesn't want to talk to me and doesn't want to train me anymore. He didn't make sense at all. He just told me we shouldn't talk anymore" she thought of what James had said and expressed a confused look, "He said he was afraid of me"

"Why would he be afraid of you?" Pan chuckled.

She shrugged, "I don't know, he's weird" she decided to leave the part about the kiss, seems a bit too embarrassing to talk about it, especially to Pan.

After moments of silence, evening was slowly turning night and stars began to appear in the sky.

"If you like, I could train you" Pan said.

Mara gave him a strange look as if he was funny. "What?" She laughed softly.

"I got nothing else to do anyway, I can train you myself"

She was a speechless for a moment, her mouth agape a little. "You sure about that?"

"You doubt me?"

She chuckled, "I just...never took you as a fighter to be honest, literally fighter."

Then he gave her a strange look as if she were rather stupid. "You think in the last few centuries I never fight?"

"Wow, you're actually that old?" She was somehow surprised.

Pan scoffed as if he was offended, "Do you want me to train you, or not?"

Mara was hesitant, then she realized she had nothing else better to do. She surely doesn't want to go back to the camp just yet. She then finally shrugged and said "Alright, fine" she stood up.

If Pan had lived for centuries, that's very long, then he must be skilled in fighting. Perhaps better than Thomas, anyone on the island or anyone she knew.

He did left for only few moments then came back with two canteens of water for her and some weapons. But no wooden swords or daggers like how she and James used to train. The only wooden weapon was staffs "You know, when James trained me, we'd stick to wooden swords before we begin with the actual swords"

"I'm not James" he scoffed. "No wonder you're still terrible. You don't need those anymore, I think you've improved well enough without em'"

She frowned at him. As it was a bit too dark to see, Pan started a bonfire so they can see. They started with swords first, and they kept their distance from the fire. They were near the waters, just few feet from it's waves.

"Alright, let's see how well you do, see if you can beat me" he smirked.

Mara knew how this will end, no way she can. She drew her sword and readied while Pan stood straight and had his weapon behind him. It hinted that she wouldn't last for ten seconds.

She stayed where she stood for seconds before charging forward, plunging her sword forward toward his abdomen, but he swift to the right as her sword was merely inches from touching him and felt his boot kicking her boot and she tripped forward.

On her knees and hands, she shifted back and turned to see him in the same position. He had a smirk on his face, "That was like, what? Three seconds?"

Mara groaned, frowned at him as she got back up on her feet. He was far better than anyone she knew. She continued to try and beat him as the night finally fell.
