chapter twenty-four: two peter parkers
"Tragedy." Michelle and Ned listened to the television as Jameson broadcast just outside the building where May had died. "What else can I call it? What more needs to be said? The damage... the destruction... you saw it with your own eyes."
Michelle clenched her fists as she tried to contact you and Peter. "When will people wake up and realize that everywhere Spider-Man goes... chaos and calamity ensue. Everything Spider-Man touches come to ruin. And we, the innocents, are left to pick up the pieces."
Ned shook his head as Jameson continued talking. "J. Jonah Jameson, reporting. Good night. And God helps us all."
Ned's grandmother offered Ned a drink and hugged her grandson in comfort. Thunder roared outside as rain poured down heavily. Michelle looked at Ned for any confirmation. "Still nothing?"
"No." Ned sighed, setting his phone down when he couldn't contact Peter. Michelle sat next to the ancient relic entrusted to her by you. She stared at it and huffed. "I'm gonna press it."
Ned snapped his head at Michelle. "What? No!" He protested.
"Peter and (Y/n) told me to wait, but... I'm gonna do it."
"I just wish... I just wish that we could see him." Ned sighed as he flailed his arms around in desperation. The two friends saw what happened in front of them when something sparked. "Ned?"
"Yeah?"
"Do that again."
"Yeah." Ned nodded before repeating the same actions he had made a while ago. "I just wish we could see him."
He managed to open a small portal briefly before disappearing again. Michelle and Ned stood up as Ned began to circle his hand around to form a portal. "Okay... I just wish we could see Peter."
A portal opened that led to an alleyway, and Ned's grandmother saw it. "Salamangkero!" Ned's grandmother whispered to Ned.
Ned glanced at his grandmother before looking down at his hands. "Lola, you're right. I am magic."
Michelle squinted her eyes in the darkness to see if she was seeing Peter. "Is that him?" She asked as she tapped on Ned's arm.
"Yeah, yeah. It has to be."
"Peter." Michelle started calling the guy out in the distance. "Peter!"
"Hey, Peter!" Ned called out as well.
"Peter!"
The man in the Spider-Man suit began to run towards the portal and jumped inside. Michelle and Ned realized the man was wearing a different kind of Spider-Man suit. "Oh, woah!" Ned's grandmother began to scream in terror. "Hi. Hi!" In his calming voice, the man waved at the elderly woman to assure her that he meant no harm nor was he dangerous. The grandmother began throwing pillows at the man. "No, no, no. It's okay. It's okay. I'm a nice guy."
The man removed his mask, revealing a different and unfamiliar face instead of the Peter that Michelle and Ned were looking for. "Okay..." He exhaled deeply, and the grandmother hid.
The man was taller than Peter, and his hair was slightly ruffled. "Who the hell are you?" Michelle asked.
"I'm Peter Parker." The man introduced.
"That's not possible," Michelle complained.
"I am Spider-Man." The man continued. "In my world. But then, yesterday? I was... I was just here."
The man, who introduced himself as Peter, looked back at the portal and gasped. "Wow." He breathed out. "String theory... multidimensional reality... and matter displacement—all real?" He asked Michelle and Ned.
"Yeah..." Michelle and Ned said in unison.
The other Peter grinned as he pumped his fist up in the air. "Knew it!"
Michelle and Ned leaned at each other to whisper. "This has to be because of the spell," Ned whispered.
"The spell?" The other Peter heard. "Like magic spell?"
Ned immediately shook his head. "U-Uhh... there's no spell."
"No spell." Michelle went along.
"No."
"Magic's real here, too?" The other Peter asked.
"I mean..." Ned began but was nudged by Michelle. "Shut up, Ned."
"No, it's not real."
"Shut up."
"I mean... there are magicians and stuff, but there's no like..."
"Stop it. Stop." Michelle gave a look to Ned, and he eventually shut his mouth. Michelle faced the other Peter. "Prove it."
The other Peter knitted his eyebrows in confusion. "Prove what?"
"That you're Peter Parker."
The other Peter shook his head. "I don't carry an ID with me, you know? Kinda defeats the whole anonymous superhero thing?" Michelle immediately grabbed a bread and threw it towards the other Peter. The other Peter looked at her in confusion. "Why'd you do that?"
"To see if you have the tingle thing."
"I have the tingle thing, just not from bread." The other Peter watched Michelle grab another piece of bread immediately, so he stopped her. "Can you not throw the bread again? You're a deeply mistrusting person... and I respect that."
The other Peter jumped up and stuck his fingers up on the ceiling. Michelle shrugged, still not convinced. "Crawl around."
"Crawl around?" The other Peter asked in disbelief.
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes. Crawl around."
"Why do I need to crawl around?"
"Cause it's not enough," Michelle argued.
"This is plenty." The other Peter argued back.
"No, it's not."
"Yes, it is."
"Nuh-uh."
"How do I stick to the ceiling?"
"Do it." Michelle threw the bread again before picking up a new one. The other Peter shook his head in disapproval.
"Ned..." Ned's grandmother spoke up as she glanced at the other Peter. "Sabihin mo diyan sa mamang yan, na alisin yung agiw sa sulok. Ha?"
Ned pointed at the corner. "My Lola's asking if you could just get the cobweb there." He told the other Peter. "Since you're, like, up there?"
The other Peter sighed in frustration. "Yeah." He bit his mask and crawled on the ceiling to get to the other side, removing the cobweb on the corner. "Thank you." Ned's grandmother responded.
The other Peter jumped down and dusted his hands off. "We go—" He sighed once again when he realized his mask was still between his teeth. He pulled it out and looked at Michelle and Ned. "We're good?"
Michelle nodded. "For now." She turned to Ned as he began to conclude things. "So, I opened a wrong portal to the wrong Peter Parker." The other Peter turned around when he noticed the portal he had entered was gone.
"Yeah, I guess you just keep doing it until you find the real one."
The other Peter snapped his head to Michelle. "Ouch."
"No offense," Michelle replied before looking back at Ned. "Maybe later, we could use that to find my best friend too."
Ned nodded. "Okay."
"Okay. You got it."
Ned raised his arms again, determined to find the right Peter Parker. "Find Peter Parker."
"What's with the eyes and hand?" The other Peter asked, causing Michelle to hush him. The other Peter raised his hands in defeat.
"Find Peter Parker." Ned groaned. "Find Peter Parker!"
A portal opened up behind him, causing Michelle to turn around. A random man entered the portal wearing a blazer and a shirt inside. "Great, it's just some random guy." Ned sighed.
"Hello." The man greeted kindly. "I hope it's okay. I just came through this, uh..." He turned around to point to the portal, but it vanished. "It just closed."
"You're Peter?" Michelle asked in realization.
The older man nodded. "Yeah. Peter Parker." The man introduced before narrowing his eyes when he recognized Michelle and Ned. "I... I've seen you two..."
Ned's grandmother shyly waved, and the older Peter waved back in return with a friendly smile and slight chuckle. "Hi."
The older Peter came face-to-face with the other Peter and noticed he had a different face and suit from the Peter he saw on the news. "Wait. He's... he's not your friend..."
The older Peter's eyes widened, and the two Peters began to shoot webs at each other. The two synchronized from jumping up to the ceiling to landing on the ground. The older Peter managed to hit a web on the other Peter's web-shooter. The other Peter pointed at his webbed web-shooter and nodded in approval, while the older Peter stifled a laugh.
"Whoa, it's... so you're Spider-Man too?" Ned asked. "Why didn't you just say that?"
"I generally don't go around advertising it." The older Peter explained. "Kinda defeats the whole anonymous superhero thing."
"I just said that..." The other Peter whispered in surprise.
"That's what he just said," Michelle whispered as well.
"Ikaw, ha? Nagkalat ka nanaman." Ned's grandmother scolded the other Peter. "Linisin mo lahat ng mga basura mo dito. At ikaw? Alam mo na gusto ko itong bahay natin, maayos pero tingnan mo, dumi dito, dumi doon."
"My Lola's asking if you could clean up the webs that you just shot," Ned told the two Peters.
"Oh." The other Peter looked at Ned's grandmother. "Sorry, Lola."
"Yes, of course." The older Peter nodded.
Ned's grandmother sighed. "I'm going to bed."
"Good night, Lola," Ned told his grandmother, and Michelle greeted her good night as well. "Good night, Ned's Lola."
The other Peter began cleaning up and fixing things while the older Peter talked. "This might seem kind of weird, but... I've been trying to find your friend ever since I got here." The other Peter stopped for a moment as he stared at his different version of himself. "I just had this sense that... that he needs my help."
"Our help." The other Peter corrected, earning a nod from the older Peter.
Michelle looked at the older Peter. "He does."
"We don't know where he is nor where other best friend is," Ned added.
"And, um..." Michelle took a deep breath. "Honestly, right now, we're all Peter really has left."
The older Peter nodded in understanding. "Well, is there someplace that he might go that has meaning to him? Like a... a place where he would go to just..."
"Get away from everything?" The other Peter asked.
The older Peter nodded. "Yeah. For me, it was the top of the Chrysler Building."
"Empire State." The other Peter answered. "Better view."
"That is a sweet view." The older Peter smiled sweetly.
Michelle thought for a moment before widening her eyes. "Yes." She replied. "Yeah, I-I think I know exactly where that would be."
Michelle, Ned, and the two Peters suddenly heard a knock on the door. Both Peters were alarmed and ready to fight, while Michelle and Ned slowly and carefully approached the door. "Could that be him?"
"I'm not sure," Michelle replied as she reached out for the doorknob. "I swear to God if this is another Peter Parker I'm—"
Michelle opened the door to see you completely soaked and still holding the bag that May had given you. You tiredly looked at Michelle and Ned and gave them a weak smile. "Hey..."
"(Y/n)!"
The two Peters instantly stood straight when they heard your name. You broke into tears as you tried to speak. "I-I tried... I tried to stay a-and even run back, but he..." Your eyes rolled back and collapsed, passing out from exhaustion. Luckily, Michelle immediately caught you before you hit the ground. "Um, a little help!"
Michelle, with the help of Ned, placed you down on the couch. "What the hell happened?" Ned asked worriedly as he pushed a stray hair back away from your face. Your hair was almost dry, but your clothes were still soaking wet.
The two Peters walked towards Michelle and Ned to see what was happening. Their eyes widened in surprise. "Holy shit." They said in unison.
Michelle looked up in confusion. "What?"
"It's... (Y/n)."
Ned looked closely and noticed marks on your neck. "MJ, look..."
Michelle leaned closer to your neck, and her eyes widened, looking at you immediately in worry. "What the hell happened to you?"
You slowly opened your eyes, and Michelle was the first one you saw. "MJ..." You croaked out. Michelle smiled in relief and went to your side. "Hey, hey, you're okay. You're safe."
"D-Did I lose him?" Your lips began to tremble. "Is he gone?"
Michelle and Ned glanced at each other. "Lost who?" Ned asked.
You opened your mouth to speak until you noticed two unfamiliar faces. You sat up and moved away, your eyes instantly filled with fear. "Wh-Who are you? Stay away from me!"
"Easy, easy." Michelle calmly reassured. "They're Peter Parkers."
The other Peter noticed your eyes welling up in tears, so he slowly approached you. You flinched, but the other Peter raised his hands. "No, I'm not going to hurt you. See? You're okay." He crouched down beside Michelle and noticed a wound by the side of your head.
The other Peter stared at your scared eyes. You hiccupped and stared back at him. "Are you really Peter Parker?"
"A different one, but yeah." The other Peter softly chuckled, making you smile a bit. The other Peter breathed in surprise. "You look so much like her."
The older Peter raised his eyebrows in astonishment. "You have... a (Y/n) in your universe too?"
The other Peter nodded. "(Y/n) Osborn. You?"
"Yeah, same." The older Peter replied. "We had a (Y/n) Osborn."
Michelle cupped your cheeks in worry. "What happened, hm? Where did you get your wound?"
"I-I was trying to run back to you and Ned, but... the Goblin... he found me." You explained but broke into tears as you clenched your fists. "I tried fighting him, but he was so much stronger and... I ran away and hid, didn't look back..."
The older Peter's expression changed. "We have to find your Peter and help him end this."
