chapter sixteen: late night call
"Stark Industries was caught in the web of the Spider-Man/Mysterio controversy today when federal agents opened an investigation into missing Stark technology. The agents wanna know exactly what was taken..."
You slumped down to your seat as you stared helplessly at the television screen. "God, I had to sneak my suit out so the agents wouldn't confiscate it."
You and Happy were visiting Peter and May to listen to his lawyer. While Peter's lawyer was busy talking on his phone, Happy cringed at the sight of his picture being viewed on the television screen. "At least they used a good picture."
Peter grabbed your hand as he stared at the screen. "What is happening?" He whispered. He glanced at you, and you were caressing the necklaces he had given you back in Europe. He noticed a few changes you made to the necklace, which caused him to smile. "Are you okay?"
"Nervous." You gulped. "Anxious. I don't know. This whole thing is stressing me out."
"Me too." Peter sighed. "How could I have been so careless?"
"That's great. Thank you." Matthew Murdock, Peter's lawyer, sat back down in his chair as he ended the call. "Well, I have some good news, Peter. I don't believe any of the charges against you are gonna stick." He smiled.
Peter gasped. "Wait, seriously?"
May and Happy chuckled in relief as May slammed her fist while Happy grinned at Peter. "Oh, I knew it."
You sighed in contentment and held Peter's hand. Peter smiled at Matt. "Oh, my God, Mr. Murdock. Thank you."
"Thank you, Matt." May thanked Matt as well.
"That's amazing."
"You're welcome." Matt nods. "However... Mr. Hogan?" Your smile dropped when Matt mentioned Happy's name.
Happy turned to Matt. "Yes?"
"The feds are actively investigating the missing technology." Peter looked at Happy in confusion. "I understand you're loyal to Mr. Stark and his legacy, but if you were involved..."
"If I was involved?"
"I might secure a lawyer."
"I need a lawyer because I'm un... I'm under inves—" Happy stuttered and glanced at Peter. "I thought he would—you said, there's no charge. I co-could say that under the advisement of counsel, I refuse to answer the question respectfully because I... the answer could incriminate me."
Happy started rambling, so May had to comfort and calm him down. You stared at Happy in worry. "There's a saying in Goodfellas." Happy ranted. "What did they say in Goodfellas?"
"I know, thats interesting..." May nodded in understanding. "Calm down. Let's hear what he has to say. Matt?"
Matt sighed. "You're gonna need a really good lawyer." He turned to Peter. "Peter, you may have dodged your legal troubles, but things will get much worse. There is still the court of public opinion."
Soon after Matt finished his sentence, someone threw a brick towards the window. "Mysterio forever!" The man shouted as May ducked, Happy shielded his face with his arm, while Peter covered your head with his arm and hand to protect you. Peter's other hand was stretched out to catch the brick, but Matt somehow managed to grab it first.
Peter's eyes widened in bewilderment, and Matt gave him the brick. "How did you just do that?" Peter asked Matt.
"I'm a really good lawyer." Matt smiled.
Peter looked at you, who was quivering in fear, and your hands clutched on each side of your head. "Hey, hey, it's okay. It's over."
"I-It is?"
"Yeah, yeah, what's wrong?"
You opened your eyes and spotted the brick in Peter's hand. You ignored his question and noticed there was paper wrapped around it. "Wh-What does it say?"
"We believe in Mysterio." Peter read out loud. He dragged you closer when he noticed you were still trembling. He didn't know exactly why you were still freaked out, but he did not question it to you for now.
May sighed. "We're gonna need a safer place to live."
°•○•○•°
"How's the place?" You asked as you gazed at Peter on your phone. You two were up late at night, calling each other.
"It's good," Peter replied as he stared at you lovingly through his phone. "It's definitely bigger than ours before."
"You declined my offer to stay at my old apartment. You and May could've stayed there."
"Nah. I don't want to bother you. Honestly, I don't want to bother anyone because my identity has now been leaked to the whole world."
"I would've offered you and May to stay here, but my mother would freak out if she ever heard you and I were together at my own apartment, even if May is here."
Peter cracked a smile and suppressed a laugh. "No, it's okay. What matters is May, and I have a place to stay for a while."
You leaned your head against your pillow as you smiled. "Did you send in your applications yet?"
"I literally just finished my MIT one. You?"
You nod. "Same."
"Imagine if we both got in? With Ned and MJ?"
"Yeah, but... we have to take scholarships so we could actually go."
"Your mom's not going to pay?"
You looked away. "I told her I wanted to try applying for a scholarship. Besides, we aren't sure if I could still enter MIT even with paying because of, well, you know..."
"Come on. You got great scores, and high grades, and..."
"Do you think I'm being too exaggerating?"
"No, no, no, no. Well... kind of."
You sighed as you turned to the side and clasped a pillow to hug. "Sorry."
Peter shook his head. "That's okay. I don't blame you for it. Besides, I like how you overthink some things. It makes us think thoroughly first before we get into action. That's why it's one of my favorite things about you."
You cracked a smile. "Really?"
"Yeah." Peter nodded as he beamed back at you, relieved that you were feeling slightly better.
"Well, what are your other favorite things?"
"I love how you could be badass but vulnerable at the same time."
You laughed. "You think I'm badass?"
"Oh, hell yeah!"
"And why do you even love that I'm badass but sometimes vulnerable?"
"Because I could either team up with you or protect you." Peter grinned. "I love protecting you."
You rolled your eyes while smiling. "Well, don't be so overprotective, alright? And I love protecting you too."
"I really like how you're selfless and still worry about others even if you're not okay." Peter continued. "I also love how you're so humble."
"Oh?"
"And you look like an angel for that."
You unexpectedly heard snoring behind him, startling you. "Um, what's that noise?"
"Oh." Peter angled his head to the side to see Happy sleeping. "That's... that's Happy. Look." He pushed his arm to the side to help you see Happy. "He gave his room to May, so he's sleeping down here."
"Well, that's adorable."
"Yeah."
You chewed your bottom lip as a question popped inside your mind. "Um, I have a weird question." Peter looked back at you, letting you continue. "Does any part of you feel relieved about all of this?"
Peter thought for a moment as he pressed his lips into a thin line. "Ever since I got bit by that spider... I've only had one week where my life has felt normal. Well, kind of normal, I guess."
You clutched your pillow closer while Peter resumed. "You and Mr. Stark were the first people ever to know that I'm Spider-Man. After that, Ned found out, May knew, MJ knew, and... everyone that was in my life finally knew. And it was perfect. But now everybody knows. And..."
Peter chuckled. "I am the most famous person in the entire world... and I'm still broke."
You chuckled as well. "I can help you buy anything you want if that helps."
"Oh no, (Y/n), you're not spoiling me with any of your money."
You smirked at him. "I do whatever I want, Parker." You winked at him. "And if it means getting you and your aunt comfortable and happy, I'll do anything to do that."
"(Y/n)..."
"I'm serious." You glanced at the window to see the moon before looking back at Peter. "I'm... excited to see you again tomorrow."
Peter nodded as he grinned. "Yeah, me too."
"Wrap it up." Peter jolted up and looked behind him to see Happy awake with his hand waving for dismissal. "You both like each other. We get it. Hang up. There's no new ground being broken. Okay? I need my eight hours."
You started laughing as you hid your face on a pillow while Peter stared at Happy in disbelief and lay back on the couch. "Have you been listening to us this whole time?"
Happy closed his eyes. "Uh, not by choice."
You snickered and waved your hand at him. "Hi, Happy."
Peter glanced at you before looking at Happy again. "(Y/n) says hi."
Happy opened his one eye to see you. "Hello, (Y/n). Go to sleep, or I'm telling your mother." He scolded before going back to sleep.
Peter looked back at you and smirked. "You heard him. Lights off for you, missy."
You frowned. "You first. I'm not sleepy." As soon as you finished your sentence, you yawned and covered your mouth. Peter chuckled. "Your yawn says differently, though."
"So now what? We're not going to end our call?"
"Let's see who gets to sleep first."
After a few more exchanges of any topic that you and Peter could think of, you didn't realize your eyes were closed and mindlessly humming as Peter continued to talk. Peter stopped talking when he noticed you were finally asleep, cozy and peaceful. Peter's smile grew as he gently tapped his screen as if he was touching your face. "So pretty..." He whispered with his eyes full of adoration, making sure Happy wouldn't hear him if he ever was awake. "I'm so lucky to have you."
