{ real life }

"why do you look like that?"

"gee, thanks kai!" amara responds with a sarcastic grin, hopping into the passenger seat and buckling her seatbelt. thankfully, she ran fast enough and successfully got to tatums house thirty seconds before kai got there.

sweat drips are scattered across her forehead even though it's autumn and it's not that hot outside. luckily, kai doesn't question it further, instead just shifting the gears and reversing out of his parking spot in front of tatum's house.

there's a short car ride ahead of them, being that she and tatum live like eight minutes away from each other, so kai takes the opportunity to talk to amara. "why didn't you answer dad the first five times he texted?" kai asks, a sneak diss in there somewhere as if he's annoyed at her for not texting him back.

amara picks up on his aggression, coming to the conclusion that he was doing something important before this and is infuriated that he had to drop it to come pick her up.

she presses her lips together awkwardly; this happens a lot. amara being the forgetful girl she is always leaves her phone unsupervised, then gets all angry when she has to come home as if this is someone's fault besides her own.

amara uses the usual excuse that she uses, "me and her were watching a movie and i left my phone in her room to charge." she tells him with ease, as if she's been practicing her whole life.

he just rolls his eyes in response, not surprised at her 'reasoning' because she says the same thing every time this happens.

there's a long moment of silence, comfortable yet uncomfortable. amara looks outside her window, her heart rate beginning to speed up as she sees how close they are to her house. she hates facing her dad after incidents like this.

"do you think dad's mad?" she breaks the silence, nervousness in her tone as she asks him the same repetitive question that she always does.

kai gives her a look, "i don't know, 'mara, do you think he's mad?" he asks insincerely, clear sarcasm in his tone as if the answer is obvious.

the annoyance in kai's tone helps amara conclude that her dad is definitely mad. she sighs, taking her eyes off of her brother so she could gaze out the window. she wishers her dads temper wasn't so quick.

her dad is very strict, quite clearly. he's very protective over amara and would do anything to someone if they even remotely hurt her.

but matt doesn't hurt her, matt never hurts her!

her dad's hatred toward matt is something she never understood, but was obligated to respect.

since her dad is very overprotective, it certainly doesn't help that he hates matt with every fiber of his being over something so minor that happened years ago.

so, amara is forbidden from ever speaking or even looking at the boy. she luckily hasn't been caught with him yet, except she's been very close to getting caught many times.

those near-death experiences never stopped her from seeing her best friend. if that isn't true friendship, amara doesn't know what is.

the sudden urge to pee herself and lay directly on the road until she gets ran over by a car appears when amara notices kai pulling up into their driveway. you would've thought amara was used to it by now, considering how many times this has happened before, but that's not true. amara still gets beyond nervous every time she has to face her dad after missing his texts.

luckily, he's never suspected that she's been out with matt. he just gets really anxious when she doesn't text him back because he just wants to make sure she's safe, according to him.

amara feels the car suddenly stop moving, hearing kai's door open and close. she hesitantly follows his movements, unbuckling her seatbelt and opening the car door. she gets out of the car, following kai up the small set of stairs and onto their front porch.

kai notices the terror plastered on her face, rolling his eyes. "don't look so nervous, he's gonna think you're hiding something from him." he tells her, talking off of experience as if this has happened to him before. spoiler alert; it has!

amara inhales deeply, nodding and fixing her facial expression. she puts her hand on the door knob, attempting to twist it and let them in but she ultimately fails. she can't fucking do this, and she's not talking about twisting the door knob.

she turns around, looking at kai who just sighs because he knows what she's about to ask. "can you go in first?" she asks, taking her hand off of the door knob.

he doesn't say anything in response, instead just walking in front of her and putting his hand on the door knob. "ready?" he asks her, wanting to make sure she's mentally prepared before going in. when all she does is nod, he twists the door knob and opens the front door, being that it was already unlocked.

they walk into the house, amara walking in slowly behind kai as she's too afraid to face her dad. "amara?" she hears from the living room, her heart dropping to her ass as she recognizes her dads voice. "get in here." her dad demands.

amara's breathing stops, looking at kai who has a sympathetic frown on his face. he mouths, 'don't be dumb,' before walking up the stairs and into his own bedroom.

amara hastily walks to the living room, knowing her dad hates when she takes too long. she reaches the living room, seeing him sat up against the loveseat with a beer in his hand.

"why does this keep happening, amara?" her dad asks sternly, referring to the numerous times this same experience has occurred. his tone is scarily calm, which makes amara all the more terrified.

amara thinks fast, shifting all her weight onto one foot as she awkwardly fidgets with her fingers. "tatum doesn't have a charger in her living room so i need to leave my phone in her room to charge." she tells him.

"why can't you and tatum hang around in her room, huh?" he smart mouths her, thinking he stumped her as he takes a sip of his beer.

"because," amara sighs silently, biting on her bottom lip as she looks for the right tone to use. frankly, this isn't her giving him attitude at all, but in her dads world, everything is different. "she doesn't have a tv in her room, but she claims it's so much better watching stuff on a tv, so we go to the living room." she tells him slowly, trying not to show how scared she is.

amara's dad is obviously offended by the tone in her voice, but decides that he's too tired to keep this conversation going. "go to your room. if this happens again, there's going to be serious consequences, amara." he says sternly.

amara sighs a breath of relief, simply nodding and speed walking to her room without another word being said. she gets upstairs and into her room, silently shutting the door behind her and holding her heart dramatically.

she takes a good minute to stand in place and think about everything that just happened, then turning off the big light and turning her led lights on instead, walking to her dresser to change into clean clothes because she hates going into her bed with 'dirty' clothes.

she takes out red plad pajama pants and a red tank top, changing into it and walking over to her vanity. she removes her makeup with a makeup wipe and throws it into the mini trash can that she has beside the vanity.

she applies perfume because it makes her feel cleaner and finally gets into bed, plugging her phone into the charger and setting it on the nightstand near her bed. she decides that she'll fill her friends in tomorrow, being too tired from having to carry her heavy heart.

she just hates how he doesn't like matt. it honestly is the most draining thing in the world to have an awesome day and then have it be ruined by her unfair father, then having to go to sleep on a bad note.

this is a constant cycle that amara has to go through in order to keep her friendship with matt, which is something she doesn't think he understands well.

it's probably because of the way his parents are legit perfect angels. they give him the best parenting in the world and amara fears he'll start taking that for granted because he's getting used to it.

matt gets too comfortable sometimes, trying to get amara caught so this whole thing could be over, but he just doesn't get it.

the moment her dad and brother find out about the long lasting friendship between the two, not only will amara be dead, but so will matt.

matt believes amara is being dramatic about how her family feels, and that they wouldn't care if she just opened up and told him the truth, but he's never been in one of these situations and it clearly shows.
