The Doctor is Coming to Town - Part 4
* 3rd POV *
Slowly the cry of pain of the Yggdrasill decreases, untill it is completely silent. The girls, Loki and the Doctor remove their hands of their ears. Confused they exchange a few looks, what went wrong? The Tree of the World had given the Doctor permission to use her powers to recharge the Tardis. The blue police box is still connected with the tree and the cables emit a strong silver light.
But then, another sound reaches their ears.
It is the sound of stone shifting and scraping over something else, in a slow pace. It's still far away but definitely coming closer.
Elizabeth's face is getting pale, she know what is coming. But that's impossible. She crosses eyes with Skyler and Iris, the other Whovians, but they don't seem to recognize the sound. They just shrug and quickly Elizabeth looks away. She don't want to worry them. Perhaps she misheard? But there it is again, maybe only a few hundred meters away now.
Softly the others start to talk to each - casting curious looks at the Tardis which still isn't fully recovered - while Elizabeth keeps an eye on their surroundings. Soft but firmly she grabs Iris' arm who quickly let her conversation drop to focus her attention at her best friend.
"Iris," Elizabeth starts, still not looking at Iris but at something behind them. "Get the girls and Loki out of here."
"What? Why?" she asks in whisper.
"Just do it." It is all clear to Elizabeth now, the reason why she isn't in the comics or movies in the parallel universe. It's meant to go this way.
"And leave you and the Doctor here behind?"
"I'll stay here until the Tardis is ready to go. I'll be right behind you."
It keeps silent and Elizabeth averts her gaze shortly to Iris to see if she was listening. "You're lying," Iris says with one glance.
Of course she was lying, but why doesn't she understand she did it for their safety? "Just go," Elizabeth growls and for the first since a long time Iris sees the lion stirring under her skin. "Besides, you owe me."
"Fine," Iris sighs and she turns back to the others. "Meg, Kat, Di, Skyler, Loki... We're going."
Confused they all stare at her but she ignores their looks. "Doctor, it was my pleasure to help you. I hope you get back to your world safely."
He nods although he's not quite sure what's going on.
"Hurry," Elizabeth encourages them when they keep lingering. The sound is coming closer and closer, and actually she wants someone to help her but she can't risk their lives. After all, the Doctor knew them when they first met so it has to go this way. They all set course to the well and one by one they jump into the water, but unnoticed Elizabeth grabs Loki by his arm. With a quirked eyebrow he looks at her.
"When you're at the other side, tell them what protects the Yggdrasill."
"That's just a myth."
"It's not."
His eyes grow big, suddenly understanding what she's going to do. "You can't do that to them."
"I will when I can protect them with it. Someone has to pay. It can't be the Doctor and it can't be any of them."
"They will try to get back."
"It'll be too late by then. Go," and she pushes him towards the well. Loki climbs onto the stone edge and with a deep breath he jumps into the water. He swims all the way to the bottom of the well and then disappears into the tunnel.
After a while he reaches the end of the tunnel and he starts swimming towards the surface. The others are already heading for the shore and after he has caught his breath, he starts swimming again. He wades ashore and thinks about how he's going to tell them everything.
"How long before she'll be back?" Iris wonders softly outloud and with regret Loki looks aside to the love of his life.
"She won't be," he answers, shifting his gaze upon the horizon in the distance.
"What do you mean?" Iris asks shocked and the others start to realize there's something wrong. Katherine, Skyler, Megan and Diamond close the gap betweem them and Iris and Loki.
"What's wrong?" Katherine asks concerned when she notices Iris' shocked expression.
"Loki, tell me," Iris demands and with a sigh he starts explaining. Buying as much time as possible because he knows it would have been her wish nobody else would get hurt.
"When the Doctor attached the cables to the stump, something must've go wrong. The Yggdrasill was unprepared or something, I don't know. We can only guess what went wrong, but it did. And when the Tree of the World is in danger or when she's hurt, the inhabitants come to protect her, and they come to punish."
"The sound we heard afterwards?" Skyler guesses and Loki nods.
"I thought they were just a myth but now I suppose they were not."
"What are they?" Iris asks, with a trembling voice of horror.
"Weeping Angels."
~
"So Doctor, ever heard of the Weeping Angels?" Elizabeth asks, slowly walking back to the Tardis.
"No, but I've heard Skyler say that before..." he responds. He puts on his glasses and opens the Tardis with a snap of his fingers. He starts inspecting the cables and the monitor of the time machine.
Elizabeth suddenly freezes, something in the distance has caught her eye. "Doctor... How long before the Tardis is ready?"
"Shouldn't be too long now," he answers and casting a look at her. And then he sees it too, he pushes his glasses further upon his nose and steps outside. "What is that?"
"A Weeping Angel. Come stand with your back against mine and keep an eye on the surroundings. They can't move when you see them."
The Doctor obeys and takes out his sonic screwdriver.
"I don't think that will help, Doctor. O, and don't blink."
"Don't blink? That's impossible."
"When you blink, they move and they'll come closer."
"And what's so bad about that?"
"Blink and you're dead."
"What?!" Quickly he stops blinking because he noticed they were indeed coming closer. They are surrounded by more Angels by the seconds and Elizabeth doubts that after a few more moments they can still keep an eye on each one of them.
"Figuratively speaking then. They send you back in time."
"That's... unusual."
"Yes... They feed off the potential energy of the years which the victim would have lived in the present."
"So, they create time paradoxes?"
"Yes, Doctor. They do. So when the Tardis is recharged you run and go back to your universe. And close the gap in the Void before they can follow you through it."
The Doctor frowns. "And what about you?"
"I'll stay here. I think they're the guardians of the Yggdrasill, here to protect her from any harm. They have come to punish us."
"Then why don't you run?"
She smiles sadly. "They'll follow us to everywhere until someone is punished, I suppose. I think I know why you don't know me, Doctor. I'm meant to be send back into time, to save you all. And that's okay, I've always wanted to do something very heroic. Not to brag or something."
He snorts. "I doubt you've never done something heroic." But then with a loud noise the Tardis comes back to life. The Angels have surrounded them and with every blink they close the gap more and more.
"Run, Doctor. Run," Elizabeth demands and the thoughts are swirling around in the Doctor's head. With a growl she transforms her arms and with all her strength of a lion she pushes him inside the blue police box. The Doctor stumbles inside and quickly he turns around but it was too late. An Angel had reached her and without blinking he stares to the demonic stone statue with a wide-open mouth, vampiric teeth and clawed hands. Elizabeth is nowhere to be seen. Determination fills his mind and he closes the door.
"We've got work to do," he talks aloud and he starts to turn some levers on the monitor of the Tardis. "Time can be rewritten," he mumbles to himself and he tries to follow the time paradox which is created only a few moments ago.
~
"Loki! Why didn't you say that?! We have to go back," Iris screamed. Her face is even more pale than normal and a horrified expression is spread all across Skyler's the face, but the others have no idea why they're acting so shocked.
"Why didn't I recognize the sound?" Skyler wonders and a shiver shoots down her spine. She has always thought the Weeping Angels are the most scary monsters of the series. Not because they kill you but because they send you back into time to live your life there. Perhaps some think that's merciful but you're cut off everything you know and people will think you're mad because you know so much more. And now Elizabeth left behind to sacrifice herself for them. She just had to do something stupid...
"What is it? What do they do?" Diamond asks confused.
"They send their victim back into time," Loki answers.
"I'm going back," Iris says between gritted teeth and she starts walking into the water but Loki grabs her hand. She lets her shoulders hang and glances back over her shoulder with tears in her eyes.
"It'll be too late now. Let's hope the Doctor got away in time and he has closed the gap in the Void so that nothing can come through it."
"You don't know that," Katherine snaps at Loki. "It only has been several minutes." And she runs into the water, diving under and without hesitation Iris, Skyler, Diamond and Megan follow. Loki shakes his head but he can't let them go unprotected and he follows them through the water. Diving to the tunnel and surfacing in the well.
But there's no Elizabeth, no Tardis, and luckily no more Weeping Angels.
~
Elizabeth felt a stone cold hand on her shoulder and she closed her eyes. At least send me back to Earth, she thought.
She opened her eyes again and immediately noticed St. Paul Cathedral. Good thing, she was back on Earth, London to be precise, but what year?
She walked to the nearest person she saw with a newspaper. Without asking she yanked the newspaper out of his hands and ignored his complains while looking at the date.
'January 3th, 1940'
Well, lovely. She was in London during World War II... And wearing her nightie...

A/N: Don't you guys like dramatic things? Ghehehe, I do :) But it'll be alright, as you've probably guessed.
Anyways, next part will hopefully be online soon (but I can't promise 'cause I'm extremely busy with school, ugh) and then I don't know yet what I'll write... Perhaps another crossover? Flashbacks of your character's past? Well, let me know :) Suggestions are welcome, thihih
