Chapter 1

The bright, luminous sun shone in through the small Green Gables window as Anne Shirley-Cuthbert slowly started to wake up. She got up from her bed and made her way to the window, drawing back the curtains, and looking out to the beautiful view of light white snow, which barely covered the once green grass, and the bright baby blue sky adding a backdrop to the puffy, white clouds. She looked at the beautiful Snow Queen cherry tree that thrived by her window and softly smiled.

"Hello my dear Snow Queen," Anne said, as she delicately caressed the blossoms in her hand. "Today is going to be a good day."

She stood at the window with a smile on her face. It was Friday and not only that, but her class was going to do a spelling bee. She stayed up late last night to study for it so she would surely beat Gilbert Blythe and win. She quickly put on her brown dress, white stockings and boots, and ran down the stairs.

As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she looked over and saw her dearest Marilla putting breakfast on the table. Alerted by the noise, Marilla looked over her shoulder to see her red-haired daughter up and awake with much spring in her step.

"Oh Marilla, I'm ecstatic beyond words for another spelling bee today." Anne smiled jovially as she skipped down towards the kitchen. Marilla knew how passionate and competitive Anne gets when spelling bees take place at school. She may not say it often, but she is very proud of Anne, and loves her with her whole heart.

"I studied extra long and hard last night so I can beat Gilbert Blythe and win," Anne stated proudly. Just as Anne was going to go off on her usual rambles, Matthew walked into the kitchen from working outside in the barn.

"Well, good morning Anne," Matthew said, once he saw his daughter in the kitchen, wide awake, and already talking non-stop. Matthew Cuthbert was a quiet individual who didn't talk much, but he never seemed to mind Anne's chatter, and never refrained from talking with her. He enjoyed her company and loved listening to her when she talked about things she was passionate about.

Anne's smiled widened when she say Matthew. "Oh, good morning, Matthew. I'm so very excited this morning because we are yet again having another spelling bee!"

"Well, if you don't hurry up and eat your breakfast, you will miss the spelling bee you're so excited about," Marilla sternly replied, with a smile. Anne gasped in shock when she realized she was indeed going to be late for school. She quickly ate a little bit of eggs, a bite of bacon and grabbed her school supplies.

"Goodbye Matthew, goodbye Marilla," Anne shouted as she ran out of her home. She grabbed her coat and scarf as she ran into the brisk, cool morning air.

Anne realized that she was going to be very late for school, so she ran and fast as her legs could carry her. She ran for what felt an eternity until the beautiful sight of her school house came into view. She went to the doorknob and opened it to the loud sounds of her classmates messing around causing a ruckus. She than realized she was not late, since Miss. Stacey was not there yet, so she looked around until her eyes found her dear bosom friend, Diana Barry.

"Anne!" Diana squealed, running up to her best friend, bringing her into a tight hug.

"Hello my dearest Diana. I'm so sorry I'm late," Anne said. "Is everything alright? Miss. Stacey isn't here yet." Diana nodded.

"Yes, she is probably just running a little late this morning. She'll probably be here in a couple of minutes." She responded smiling.

As Anne walked back to her desk, she felt the familiar gaze on her from a certain hazel-eyed, curly haired boy, the infamous Gilbert Blythe. Anne and Gilbert were finally friends, but not as close and her and Diana. She forgave him, but they were still academic rivals.

A couple of minutes later, the door immediately opened and the laughter died down to see an apologetic Miss. Stacey, looking tired and frazzled.

"I'm so sorry I'm late, class," Miss. Stacey started. She quickly walked into the classroom, bags in hand. "My motorbike broke while I was riding it so I was delayed a couple of minutes."

She turned around towards the class with a smile. "Now, as you all know, I have something fun planned for today." At these words, Anne and Gilbert sat up straighter for they knew what the fun activity was. "We are going to have a spelling bee!" she exclaimed happily. Anne and Gilbert looked at one another from the across the room with a competitive grin on their faces. Everyone else, on the other hand, groaned and started complaining.

"Miss. Stacey, why do we have to do the spelling bee?" Josie Pye said aloud, standing up from her seat. "It's going to end up with Anne and Gilbert being last and going on and on for the rest of the day anyway." The class, Miss. Stacey included, laughed a little at this.

"Well Josie, you could be up there longer if you actually tried to learn the words and spell them correctly," Anne confidently stated. Josie, deflated and angry, sat down with a grim look on her face. She was about to say something in return when Miss. Stacey interrupted her.

"Alright, everyone go and stand in front of the board," Miss. Stacey started. All the students stood up at once and made their way to the front. They all stood in a line at the head of the classroom.

"Tillie, spell the word forgiveness." Tillie took a step forward and thought for a second.

"F-O-R-G-I-V-N-" Miss. Stacey shook her head giving her an apologetic look alluding that it was wrong. Tillie walked back to her seat.

"Billy, spell the word sluggish" Billy nodded, not really caring.

"S-L-U-G-I-" Miss. Stacey shook her head. "That is incorrect." Billy walked back to his seat, again, not really caring about the spelling bee.

"Jane, spell the word necessary" Jane looked anxious, not knowing how to spell the word. Doubtfully, she spelt "N-E-C-E-S-A-" Jane knew immediately that it was wrong but it was too late.

"I'm sorry, but that's incorrect, Jane," Miss. Stacey said calmly. Jane reluctantly went back to her seat.

"Moody, spell the word definitely" Moody nodded and took a small step forward.

"D-E-F-I-N-I-T-I-" Miss. Stacey shook her head. "So sorry Moody, but that is incorrect." He walked back to his seat with his head down.

One by one, every student was sent back to their seats. To no ones surprise, just Anne and Gilbert were left. Everyone knew this was going to take awhile because they didn't want to let the other win, moreover on Anne's part.

"Anne, spell the word pterodactyl" Anne nodded confidently.

"P-T-E-R-O-D-A-C-T-Y-L." Miss. Stacey smiled "Correct!" While Anne was spelling, she could feel Gilbert's gaze upon her but chose to ignore it.

"Gilbert, spell tomorrow" Miss. Stacey's voice caused him to break out of his trance and stop him from staring at Anne. He looked forward, and positively spelt out the word.

"T-O-M-O-R-R-O-W" he finished smiling. "Correct as well" Miss. Stacey said happily.

He looked back at Anne, who he had spotted looking at him as he was spelling. 'Is Anne Shirley-Cuthbert actually looking at me?' he thought to himself. Gilbert, of course, was pleasantly surprised and happy about it.

As soon as Anne saw Gilbert notice her looking at him, she returned her gaze to the front of the room, trying to hide the blush that rose to her cheeks. 'Why am I blushing,' she thought. 'It's not like I like him or anything.' She had tried to compose herself so she could concentrate on the spelling bee.

"Anne, spell proposal." Anne's eyes widened a bit by the words, but decided to ignore it.

"P-R-O-P-O-S-A-L." The blush had stayed on her cheeks from the previous word and she was praying no one took notice. Little did she know, her bosom friend Diana was watching this with a smirk on her face and would be asking Anne about this later.

"Gilbert, spell engagement." At these words, both Anne and Gilberts face flushed to a deep red. They didn't even know why. They were making a big deal out of it; they're just words!

The whole class knew that these two would end up getting engaged in the future, except the teens themselves. It was blatantly obvious to every person in Avonlea, including Ruby Gillis who used to have a big crush on Gilbert, that Anne Shirley-Cuthbert and Gilbert Blythe are made for each other; even if they don't know it yet.

Gilbert has come to the conclusion that he does indeed have feelings for Anne. With help from Bash, Gilbert had realized that he deeply cares about Anne, in a more than friends way. But he doesn't know how deep his feelings for her are, or if they're even reciprocated. All he knew was that he is in awe of her.

Gilbert choked as he tried to spell the words out. He was nervous to spell this word in particular.

"Umm...," he answered nervously. Anne had never seen him like this. It was shocking. The Gilbert Blythe was hesitating.

"E-N-G-A-G-M-" he immediately realized he forgot the E.

"Oh I'm sorry Gilbert, but an 'E' comes after the 'G', " Miss. Stacey said with a sad smile.

The girls side of the classroom erupted in cheers. Anne, of course, was happy that she won, but also confused as to why Gilbert was hesitating. This wasn't the first time he had misspelled 'engagement' before, but it was somehow different this time...

Anne walked up to Gilbert and stuck her hand out for him to shake. He chucked lightly and put his hand in hers. She wouldn't admit it, but she felt a jolt of electricity coursing through her veins at the touch. They hastily unlocked their hands from each other awkwardly, and Gilbert brought his hand to the back of his neck, he clear sign of nervousness. He looked up at met Anne's eyes.

"Congratulations, Anne. I guess I should have remembered to add that 'E,'" he slyly replied with a smirk.

Anne looked at him. 'He remembered from last time? But, how come he still messed up?'

Anne could feel her face burning with these words. 'Why am I blushing so profoundly?' She yelled at herself in her head. 'Anne, stop it!'

They silently walked back to their seats, with red faces, and noticeable smiles on their lips.

Hi! Hope you enjoyed the first chapter! If there were any mistakes or I got something wrong from what we know from the Anne With An E storyline, please let me know!

Also, in this story, Ruby doesn't have a crush on Gilbert, she has a crush on Moody. I really could not have Ruby explicitly crushing on Gilbert, like it would be to hard to write. Idk if that makes sense but yea lol. Another thing, Diana and Charlie are together, so you don't need to worry about the Charlie liking Anne storyline cause that was hard to watch in season 3. I also don't have any plans to kill off Matthew and Mary because 1. I can't write angst, and 2. I wouldn't be able to do something like that; it would internally hurt me.

Second chapter might be in a few days. I have to do some revisions from what I previously wrote.

Thank you!
