IT HAD BEEN A WEEK. A whole week of lovestruck Ben, pissed off Audrey, annoyed Mal, and one very bored Carlos.
"Evie, what can I do for you?" Carlos opened the door wider for her to enter.
Before she could get to her thing, she pointed at the large contraption sitting on his desk, "Okay, first I have to ask, what is that thing?"
"That is a three-dimensional printing forger. I didn't even have to steal it, they give all sorts of things away like candy." He then pointed to the mini-fridge in the far left, "Oh, and if you want actual candy, feel free." He had made a small sweets buffet on top of the fridge.
"Why do you need a three-dimensional printing forger?" She asked, puzzled.
"None of your business," he turned back to her, "Now, you don't knock on my door for no reason, what do you want?"
"I need your help with a boy."
"I'm flattered, but not interested at the moment."
"I meant for me." She emphasized, "I need him hurt, maybe even a little bleeding. Point is, I need you to do what you do best."
"You want me to put the fear of God into him whilst cutting off his fingers?"
"Let me rephrase, I need you to make it look like an accident."
"So you've gone down the rabbit hole again?" He finally turned his back to her as he went back to screwing bolts in his new printer, "Do you remember the last guy you went out with?"
"I didn't go out with Anthony, I had fun with him." Evie said, in a 'duh' tone.
Carlos pondered on it for a minute, then decided to let it go. "And how is he hurt and bleeding going to help your chances?"
"I think he likes me, but I need to it to cement quickly. So, later today he's taking me to explore the gardens that connect to the forests. There, I want him to fall and get injured, but luckily the amazing Evie will be there to help." She raised her arms like she was welcoming the praises of a crowd.
Carlos waited for a second, his hand cupping his chin in thought. "Okay," He simply replied.
Evie's head tilted, glad he agreed but also suspicious of how easy it was, "That's it? Okay?"
"What do you expect?"
"I don't know," she shrugged before saying, "a few more comments about taking out his fingernails and then passive-aggressively agreeing to help me."
"Evie," Carlos walked up to her and took both her hands in his only to look her straight in the eye, "You are my oldest friend, my closest confidant, if you need my help, I'll gladly do it."
She leaned back for a minute, her eyes squinting, "Practicing your good guy words for the Auradoners?"
He dropped her hands, "Yep, how was it?"
"A little cheesy but that's expected."
"Hm," he nodded, "Noted. Just let me know when and where you need me for later." Carlos turned around to continue working on the printer.
"Wait, so, you're still going to help?"
"Sure, why not? I'll never pass up a chance to see someone bleed." He said as he twisted a metal bolt harshly.
"Sweet, I'll call you." She turned to leave and as she was about to grab the doorknob, it twisted open to reveal Jay.
The cunning man gave her an acknowledging nod as he walked to his bed, not missing the looks that Evie and Carlos sent his way when they saw the sly smirk upon his face. He was happy, too happy.
"Someone's adjusting to Auradon rather quickly," Carlos commented.
Jay turned to them and didn't say a word, he let his playful smile say it all.
"More like someone got lucky," said Evie.
"I told you he'd be screaming my name within a week." Jay reminded them.

"Say it again," Jay whispered demanding, his mouth inches from Chad's but never quite meeting it. The blonde quaked as he felt cold fingers brush over his inner thigh.
Chad's sigh was mixed with Jay's hot breath, he really was in over his head here. But every time he thought about backing out, he was drawn in by the villain. Jay wasn't just wildly attractive, he had this confidence, this commanding presence that he's never seen before. As he bit his lip, he relented, "Touch me,"
Jay leaned his forehead up against the prince's, he gave him a small yet cruel smile, "Why should I? Why should Iโ" Jay's hand slid down Chad's leg only to grip the back of his knee and push them together, earning a quick groan from the blonde as he grinded them momentarily, "โwaste any of my time on pretentious little princes like you?"
Chad could barely speak as he was practically frozen sitting on the couch in the empty tourney lounge. It was midnight, a time that his mother always warned him about. Nothing good ever happens after midnight. But how could something so bad feel so good? He gulped silently as he practically begged, "Please," he let out another deep breath when Jay squeezed his sides once more.
"I want you to do something for me,"
"Anything," Chad breathed.
Jay smiled. "Yeah?"
The blonde only nodded, not trusting his voice.
Jay got close to the boy once more to discreetly whisper, "I want to hear you screaming my name when I'm making you feel very, very good," his mouth hovered over Chad's, teasing around it as he gave him a quick lick over the blonde's lips that made him tremble in response. "Can you do that for me?"
Chad barely had a second to think about it when he found himself nodding, "Yes," he said desperately.
Being with Jay often felt like you were drowning. At least that's how Chad would describe it. It starts off fun and interesting, below the water where you get to see a differentโ yet beautiful world. A world you knew you couldn't be part of, but you still held your breath for as long as you could to stay there. It's an adrenaline rush, and when your lungs are burning under the surface you still hold off because you're not ready to leave. So you stay under the water, you wait until you can feel your heart pounding in your head, and then you swim up to catch that life-saving air. Only you know that once you're settled, you're going back down eventually. Chad knew he'd come back to Jay, he didn't mind drowning for a while.

With Ben being the only one in her eyesight, it was kind of difficult to avoid him. He kept asking Mal questions and talking about Auradon, the guy wouldn't shut up. One thing she noticed about him was how his eyes had changed because of the spell. Most people couldn't tell โpeople who didn't have magicโ that there was a simple way to detect if someone were under a spell. A person's eyes become almost hazy, like there were actual clouds around the original color blocking the person underneath. She made a mental note to herself to cast a cloaking spell over that, so the Fairy Godmother (or her daughter) won't suspect anything.
It didn't take long to walk through the forests and reach the old ruins of what used to be some sort of lake-side castle. You couldn't tell if it weren't for the number of broken pillars and columns that still resided in the area. The rocks looked and felt ancient, different from the new castles in Auradon, and more inviting than the decrepit buildings on the Isle. She didn't know what it was, but she liked this spot, these beautiful ruined pillars that gave a sense of history to the Enchanted Lake.
Though she would chastise herself in the future for not even bothering to properly research a place called the Enchanted Lake. She thought it was just a title considering the majority of these families wanted nothing to do with magic. At the time, she didn't know what it really was, no one did.
Mal gave a small mock gasp as she pulled out a fancy green bottle from the picnic basket, "Prince Benjamin, you brought champagne?"
"What can I say? We should celebrate, it's our first official date." He gave a big grin. He's always happy around Mal, it's given thanks to the spell.
As he pulled out champagne glasses and popped the bottle, she said, "On the Isle, all we ever had was wine or rum, sometimes the occasional ill-attempted beer brew. There's always someone that thinks they've cracked the best beer recipe but in the end, it still tastes like bitter death."
"That's depressing," he commented, "Remind me to take you and your friends to this bar Rudy took me to, it's got this rich sweet ale. You'll love it."
In all fairness, the date could be worse. She had free food, free drinks, someone complimenting her every now and then. This wasn't half bad. And there were these interesting pyramid-shaped red fruits that looked incredible.
"Open. Go on." He instructed her as he fed her the pastry.
"Mm," Was all she could get out as she took another bite that left her with jelly on the corner of her mouth.
"Is this your first time?"
"Mm, we don't really date much on the island." Mal purposefully kept it vague, "It's more like someone wants you and you either go with it or you slap them across the face." She took a gulp of alcohol, "Sometimes both,"
"Um, I meant, is this your first time eating a jelly donut?"
Mal made an o shape with her mouth as she understood the question, which led her to ask, "Is it bad?"
"You got a- just a- I mean, yeah, do this." He wiped his own mouth for her to copy until she was clean.
"Mm-hmm. Gone?" he nodded in response, "You can't take me anywhere, I guess." Mal said.
"You know, I've done all the talking. Your turn. I really don't know that much about you. Tell me something." He asked, leaning back on the blanket with his elbow to support him.
Mal made sure to keep her answers short and simple, she didn't really want to talk at the moment, "Well, I'm twenty. I'm an only child. And I've only ever lived in one place."
"Me, too. That- we have so much in common already." he said before slightly shrugging, "Well I'm twenty-one but still, close enough."
"No. Trust me, we do not. And now you're gonna be king." Her entire demeanor changed when it came to talking about his coronation, she got excited.
But it didn't look like was, "Yeah," was all he said.
"What?"
"A crown doesn't make you a king." He told her.
"Well, it kind of does," Mal remembered all the times Jay spoke of his royal status, that he was meant to be king and she knew just how much the symbolism of a crown meant to him.
"No, itโ" he paused for a second, "Your mother is the mistress of evil and I've got the poster parents for goodness. But we're not automatically like them. We get to choose who we're gonna be." She'd argue that she already isn't anything like her mom, but this seemed like something he's been thinking about for a while. "And right now, I can look into your eyes and I can tell you're not evil. I can see it." If there was a camera on her, this would be where she'd look at it in sarcasm as a response to that statement. Ben noticed how quiet she got and decided they needed a distraction, "Let's go for a swim."
"Hm? What?" Mal genuinely wasn't listening until she saw him unbuttoning his shirt with a towel draped on his shoulder, "Uh, right now?
"Yeah, right now," He kicked off his shoes.
"I think I'm just gonna stay here."
"No, no, no. Come on." He gestured with his hand for her to follow as she shook her head."
"I think I'm gonna stay behind and try a strawberry." Mal pointed at the red fruits as she picked one up, "I've literally never tried a strawberry before." She took a bite and she immediately changed her focus on the food. That was actually really good.
"All right," he shrugged, letting it go, "Save me some, don't eat all of them."
"Okay." She said, already on her third strawberry.
Mal stopped when she saw Ben climbing up the forest steps only for him to give a great big scream (that he tried to make sound like a roar) as he plunged down into the water.
She took about five minutes going through the rest of the picnic basket, tasting as many new and different foods as she could. Even though Mal has been in Auradon for a little more than three weeks, she hasn't really immersed herself in the delicacies this place offered; she was always busy with something. Now though, she tried to give herself a few minutes to relax somewhat.
But then she noticed something. It was too quiet. No splashes, no feet hitting the water, nothing. "Ben?" she asked aloud, "Ben?!" Oh, this wasn't happening, she can't lose the one opening she had to get that stupid wand. "Ben!" Mal looked around from the small space she was in, seeing no person or movement. What are the chances that fall was too hard on him? What if he went too deep? She had to go in and try to find him but there was a problem with that. She doesn't swim. Most of the Isle residents can't, and it's not just because of the barrier, because it actually does have a good amount of water included inside it, it was the sharks and the crocodiles waiting for you if you ever jumped in. She had to go in and get him. Ugh, what was that underwater breathing spell? She knew there was one, but even as she thought about different ways and weighed her chances, she was losing time and it wasn't helping. "Oh, screw it," she grumbled and jumped into the shallow water, clothes and all. As she shifted closer to the deeper part of the lake, she could feel herself sinking.
She was flailing around as she went in deeper, trying to keep her toes on the lake's floor as best she could until there wasn't any left. She desperately tried to cling to the surface and she swallowed water in the process, her head dipping back every now and then until a pair of arms came to bring her up. They swam them both closer to the shallow part of the lake and back to the ruins area. Once she was near it, she grabbed hold of the cement edges to lift herself up, panting and coughing up the water in her lungs.
"What the hell was that? I couldn't see you anywhere! I thought you drowned!" But she still took her time to yell at her date.
"You- you can't swim?" He was surprised and strangely focused on her in a different way than before.
"No!"
"You live on an island!" He said, his tone of voice slightly matching her angry energyโ only she didn't notice on account of her own current predicament and focused on other things.
"Yeah, with a barrier around it, remember?" She replied, her tone sarcastic and angry, "Ugh!" she yelled, frustrated. Mal not knowing how to swim went deeper than just the barrier and the sharks, she honestly hated the water. She hated the rain, she hated being wet, it was an icky feeling all around. Drinking it is fine but on the outside? Don't even get her started.
"And you still tried to save me."
"Yeah. And do you thank me? No! All I get is soaking wet!" She complained again, grumpily wringing her dress to get rid of as much water as she could.
"And, uh, this fancy rock." He showed the white shining rock that looked like it belonged in as decoration in a fish tank. "It's yours. Make a wish and throw it back in the lake." She could only look at him wondering if he was serious only to grab the rock and throw it violently into the water before stepping back onto the picnic blanket.
He grabbed a towel from his things to throw on her and he didn't miss the way she jumped from the sudden contact, "Um, Mal, I told you that I loved you." He said it carefully like if he chose the wrong words he'd scare her off, "What about you?"
"Back home, we don't really experience stuff the way you do, you know? We didn't grow up with tales of our parents getting their happily ever after. I don't know what to tell you, much less where to start." She had to admit, it sounded like a bullshit excuse, but it was the first thing that came to mind. Besides, why make such an effort over a love-spelled guy?
"Well have you ever been in love before?" He changed his question.
Mal didn't know why she was honest in that moment. Maybe it was because she knew he'd never repeat a word of it to anyone. Maybe it was because Ben genuinely had a face that made it easy to talk to. In the end, she'll chalk it up to too much champagne. "I was once," she nodded solemnly, "I fell hard for someone a few years ago. It was almost like a click went off in my head telling me that that's the person I want. That's who I want to be with. She was funny and fearlessโ"
"She?" Ben asked, surprised.
"Yeah, she." Mal stared at him, almost daring him to ask more.
Ben nodded slowly, "Cool," was all he had to say. "Cool, cool, cool." He repeated. "That sounds prettyโ"
"Cool?" Mal teased. "Yeah, anyway, I just knew that she was awesome and I wanted to get to know her. Took me a few months to actually work up the courage to ask her out."
"What happened?"
"We went out for about a year and it was great, it was incredible but then stuff happened. She got upset over some things, it wasn't really a big deal and we broke up over something so stupid." She recalled the big fight, all because a friend of a friend died, it wasn't like she was close to the guy, why was she so upset about it? "Anyway, long story short, she got into this whole pirate phase, got some crew to follow her and she basically banished herself to a corner on the Isle. It was way too dramatic for my taste."
"Do you still miss her?" He asked.
Mal took a moment to ponder the question. She didn't know the answer, not fully. "Sometimes," she nodded, "But there were so many things we disagreed with and so many things that made us both angry. I don't know if what we had was love, we were young and stupid and it was fun but it was also messy. I don't think I've ever felt real love."
"Maybe I can teach you." He kept looking at her with these deep intense eyes. All she could do was beg the universe he wouldn't lean in. In fact, she had so many thoughts going through her head that she didn't notice his eyes turned back to normal, no more haziness in its color. She couldn't tell that the spell had washed away and this was actually Ben, slowly falling in love with her. And it grew to be one of his biggest regrets.

"Thank you again for agreeing to this, I just wanted to apologize for my friends and their awful behavior," Ora told her, his hands fidgeting nervously.
"It's fine, where I'm from that's the least offensive lunch I've ever experienced." She joked.
"This place is beautiful by the way," she commented on the gardens.
"Yeah, it's one of my favorite places around here. But, I actually wanted you to see this great spot in the preserve. A couple of decades ago there used to be this great big tree that was cut down. I mean the stump is still big though, very big."
"Thanks for inviting me, by the way. None of us are really making that many friends."
"Of course," he nodded, "I'm sorry about that by the way. You'd think Auradon would be more accepting, the land of opportunity and whatnot."
"It's fine, nothing I can't handle." They started walking out of the gardens and to where it joined with the nature preserves.
"So, tell me about yourself," He asked, "I feel like I've told you my whole life story."
"When everyone knows who you are, there's not much to tell." She said, "But luckily for you, I love talking. Let's see, I love science, chemistry is my favorite subject. I was homeschooled by my mom when I was a kid, then I joined Dragon Hall when I was thirteen, I met my friends, my mother died, I met my first boyfriendโ"
"Wait, your mom died?" Ora stopped in his tracks.
"Yeah," she nodded, "There was a fire in her bedroom." She tried her best to say it in a way that didn't sound braggy.
"I'm so sorry," his hand landed on her forearm, "Nobody said the Evil Queen was gone."
Evie shrugged, trying to get past the subject of her mom, it was her he should be focusing on, "I mean it happened years ago, they probably told Snow White and her family," but then she focused on how his hand held her arm. "It was actually really difficult. I was just thirteen and I didn't have a dad or anyone else to take me in. I just had that big, dark, empty castle to myself. I'm just so lucky that I met my friends. They really got me through it." She made it seem like she had suffered greatly when in fact she was the one to get rid of her mother and take control of her castle.
He gave a few more arm squeezes in response until his hand lowered and their fingers intertwined. They stayed like that for the rest of the trip until they reached the large tree stump he had mentioned.
"Wow, you weren't wrong," she came to the foot of the tree, "Imagine what it must've looked like before they cut it."
"So, do you take all your dates to the cool, weird, make-out stump in the middle of the woods?"
"Make-out stump?" he asked, chuckled and baffled. "I am insulted, this-this is a landmark of nature cut down by those in charge." Ora was actually quite passionate about conserving nature and made Evie remind herself that there was an actual person in front of her, not just a patch of green hair and a beautiful pair of different eyes. "You'd think that after getting himself cursed as a beast after insulting a sorceress, the king would've thought twice before cutting down a huge relic that was important to the faeries."
"Wait, what do you mean important?" Evie crossed her arms, the conversation was actually pretty interesting.
"There were some rumors that the tree was a natural way to get to Neverland, to where faeries come from."
"Neverland isn't already part of Auradon?"
Ora shook his head, "Neverland exists in this pocket dimension, sort of, it's part of the magic that keeps you from aging. It's sort of frozen in time. They couldn't figure out a way to bring it here and keep the magic, so the humans there decided to join everyone here instead and go home for special moments."
"But how could they get home without the tree?"
"Second star to the right, and straight on 'till morning," Ora answered with glee like he had an inside joke with himself. "Before Auradon was coming together, Neverland knew of the tree and its powers to travel in-between realms. When they were planning to use it for trips back home for the humans, the king had it cut down. Now, he supposedly didn't know about it, he wanted to build some type of shrine or monument for his wife, I don't know." He shrugged, "So when he learned what it actually was, he stopped the whole thing, promised to leave the stump untouched so something like that could never happen again. Now, instead of the tree, anyone who wants to go home to Neverland has to wait a year for fairy pick up with pixie dust."
She snorted automatically as he said those last two words, reminding herself that pixie dust was actual magical flight dust and not the drug she manufactures in her lab back home. "Why do you know so much about this?" She had to ask, it was almost like he was there.
"Wendy Darling was my grandmother, her daughter Jane is my mom." He answered with a smile, which told her that he didn't get the chance to talk about his family much since everyone probably knew who he was.
"Wait so your mom is Jane and the Fairy Godmother's daughter is also Jane?"
"Yeah, we're old family friends, when FG had her kid, she named her after my mom."
"FG?"
"Her name is a mouth-full and you know it,"
"You would know, Pytho Orakuru," she said his equally long name, "Yours just rolls right off the tongue," she said, grinning at him.
"It does, doesn't it?" He laughed with her.
"So, do you get to go home too? Back to Neverland?"
"I do go with the rest of the family and the Lost Boys and their kids too," he told her, "But it's not really home for me," he shrugged his shoulders truthfully. "I grew up in Auradon, near New Olympus because of dad, and then I was sent to boarding school, now I'm here in Auradon Hall because mom wanted me to get a degree just like her. And every summer we visit Neverland, somewhere that was home to all these people in my life but I don't really feel the same connection that they do. I never went on these great adventures, I never fought anyone, or helped faeries, or was part of some big band of brotherhood."ย
"You feel unaccomplished." Evie realized.
Ora could only shake his head yes. It was easy to talk to Evie. She wasn't afraid to say what she felt. But the rest of his friends? Anyone close to his age, and they were scared to say they sought out adventure or quests simply because they knew how disappointed their parents would be. Their parents suffered to get to a normal, happy, boring life. A life they always wanted, but their kids have heard the tales of heroes that their parents became, grew with a desire to be exactly like them. Ora craved to be like his mom and grandmother, he wanted to make memories he'd never forget, to fall in love and have some excitement in his life. If only he knew just how good he had it before it all came tumbling down.
He decided to take a seat on the ground next to the stump, "And I'm not the only one, everyone here feels secretly unaccomplished to some degree. You think Ben feels like he earned that crown? By, what? Being born? Try living up to a man who was cursed so he could be a better person and almost died in the process and the woman who stood up to an entire angry town mob that wanted to kill that guy. Ben feels just as undeserving as the rest of us, only for him it's worse, heavy hangs the head that wears the crown has never been more true." He got a bit quiet after that.
Evie sat down next to him. "You know I never wanted a crown."
He silently looked at her in surprise.
"I mean I do look great in one and they make excellent accessories," she laughed which earned her a laugh from him as well, "But personally I never wanted a crown or to rule over people, it seemed like something my mom wanted for me. I was fine without it." She scrunched her nose. As long as they knew she was the smartest and the prettiest and there was no way anyone could match her. "Probably because she always told me I needed to be exactly like her, but then she'd say the most paradox things like I'd never be as smart as her or as pretty as Snow White if I didn't do this or this and how much of a disappointment I was." And in response, Evie would replace all her makeup products with poison ivy and nightshade paralytics. She'd stay stuck red, itching, and blotchy for hours without being able to move.
"I think you look really beautiful."
Her head tilted up at his words, she instantly blushed and smiled. "You're sweet," she said in response, "But like really sweet and honest, I like that. I don't meet a lot of people like that." Evie shook her head, "They mainly just want to sleep with me," He tried coughing but his throat was dry, "And after we'd have sex they'd just turn out to be boring or liars and it was just so disappointing, you know?" His throat had only gotten dryer, "But you're sweet, I never meet anyone sweet." Evie turned to him again with a smile to which he smiled back after he got over the initial words.
Ora lived on the mainland his whole life, a place where anything dirty, anything taboo, was left behind doors and never discussed in public. Where even rowdiest pubs were cleaner than the castles on the Isle. She knew he'd be surprised with the way she spoke and how forward she'd be, and she was fine with it. Finally, a boy that wouldn't try to make it all about him in the bedroom department. Sure, the girls she'd been with were better at giving and receiving, but the boys were awful at it.
"Thanks," was all he could say after clearing his throat for a final time.
They stayed sitting there for a while, talking and laughing, and it was nice. And Evie instantly felt like this was the guy of her dreams. Now all that was left was to have Carlos throw a knife at him.
"Hey I'm starving, you wanna get out of here?" He stood up and extended his hand which she grabbed instantly.
Once she was up she kept her hand in his, "Definitely," she said. As they walked to leave and they got to an edge of the preserve that was perfect for falling and tumbling down, Evie yanked on his arm, "Wait, before we leave I just want to try something."
"Okay,"
She pulled his arm closer to her as her other arm circled around the back of his neck and he leaned down. The kiss was filled with desire and lust, Evie wanted it hot and heavy and he gave it to her. Both her hands were in his hair now, as his arms wrapped around her waist and drew her in closer. Ora wasn't used to girls kissing him, he'd had two kisses in his entire life and neither one ended with him having a girlfriend. Now, though? He didn't know how but he knew it was different. He kissed her with all he had and she did too. Just as her tongue came out to lick his bottom lip, he pulled away to take a breath. It was the farthest anyone had gotten with him and he didn't want to go so fast so soon.
"That wasโ"
"Very nice." She finished for him.
He could only nod, words not being enough. And then he smiled and she did too.
And then she screamed.
It happened so fast, they were already near an edge that easy to fall down a small hill. And the momentum that came from whatever pierced her skin wasn't helping. As she fell down the hill, she could hear Ora yelling her name in shock. When Evie tumbled down, she felt the scratches and the sharp rocks cutting away at her arms and shoulder until she finally stopped and lay there on her back.
Evie practically cried out when she saw the large pool of blood forming around her thigh, the metal blade sticking out of it. She had been wearing a short dress and black fishnets, so the blade had gone straight into her flesh. As she heard Ora running towards she knew it'd look especially bad if he saw a knife if he knew someone did this to her. They both knew no one in Auradon was even remotely capable of the act. So, she took a deep breath and tried not to wince as she gripped the handle and yanked it out. She let out a strong gasped and tears were in the corner of her eyes. She threw it to the side as far as she could. Ora was getting closer and when she went to grab at the wound and give it pressure, she actually did cry out, she didn't let her pain show.
It didn't even matter that Ora was all over her, that he took his sweatshirt off to wrap around her leg and carried her to the nurse. It didn't matter that he stayed with her the entire time and even took her to her dorm room. It didn't matter because all Evie could think about was slitting Carlos de Vil's throat over and over again.
