"M-mum, is that you?"
"It is, sweetheart," Evelyn said, moving slightly so the light from the hall illuminated her face. Her cheekbones had sunken back and so had her eyes. There were dark rings around her eyelids, and her once blonde hair had turned brown due to the dirt. A strangled sob left Johnny's throat as he brought his knees closer to his chest, burying his head in them.
"I-I'm going mental," Johnny cried. "Y-you're supposed to be dead! I saw the coffin!"
"I-I'm alive, Johnny," said Evelyn, stroking Johnny's knee softly. Johnny looked into his mother's eyes, and slowly he reached for her hand. When Evelyn interlaced her fingers with his, Johnny threw himself forward and wrapped his arms around his mother's waist, crying into her chest. "Shh, it's okay. I won't let anything happen to you."
Evelyn wrapped her arms around Johnny's shoulders and softly ran her hand through his hair comfortingly.
"Mind keeping it down a bit," Johnny heard a voice call out. He moved his head from his mother's chest, and looked around to see a woman poking her head through a sizeable hole in the wall. Johnny instantly recognised her as Bellatrix Lestrange, the famous Death Eater responsible for torturing Neville's parents. Bellatrix observed Johnny for a minute, before a look of realisation came across her face and she clapped excitedly. "Ooo, Evie! It's your son! What're you in for, kid?"
"Shut it, Lestrange!" Evelyn snapped at her, moving so she could poke Bella in the eye. The Death Eater wailed and threw herself back out of sight. Evelyn turned back to Johnny, a wary smile on her face as Johnny placed himself in another corner, his knees back up to his chest. Johnny was shivering like a leaf, so Evelyn sat next to him and pulled Jinny towards her, so his head was resting on her shoulder and her arms were wrapped around him, trying to keep her boy warm.
"I thought he killed you," Johnny croaked, his voice hoarse from crying.
"He killed someone else, and transfigured that body to look like me," Evelyn explained, resting her head on top of Johnny's. Evelyn took another deep breath and continued on. "That Umbridge woman? The one who sent you here? Yeah, she's a Death Eater too. Jakob, that rat bastard, Peter, and Barty Crouch contacted her when they were through with me, and I've been here ever since."
"I-I always thought there was something dodgy about her," said Johnny, his shivering having calmed down slightly. "S-so they really did-?"
"Rape me? Yeah," Evelyn said, as though it pained her to admit it.
Flashback, November 1994
Evelyn hummed to herself as she got out of the shower, wrapping a towel around her damp body and another towel around her hair. She exited the en-suite bathroom in her room at Potter Manor and sat down in front of her vanity mirror, still humming 'Space Oddity' by David Bowie softly as she looked at the few pictures she had on her desk.
They were all from when she was at Hogwarts and just a bit after. The first picture she smiled fondly at. It was just before she had given Johnny up for adoption. There he was in a little onesie with broomsticks, Quaffles, Snitches, Bludgers and goalposts on, in the arms of James Potter. James was smiling widely in the moving picture, looking into the camera as baby Johnny grabbed his finger with his tiny hand.
"Look at him! Definitely more of a Potter!"
Evelyn remembered her brothers words vividly, as though he had only uttered them the day before. The next picture was of her and Lily at Hogwarts, just after they had pranked James by saying they were officially together, and Lily had kissed her for extra effect.
"James, there's something Lily and I need to tell you," sixteen year old Evelyn said, walking through the entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room, hand-in-hand with Lily. James was sat around the fire with Sirius, Remus, Peter, Frank Longbottom, Alice Fortscue and Marlene McKinnon.
"You see, James, Evelyn and I are together, and we didn't want you to get heartbroken if you had found out through someone else," James's eyes were wide with shock when Lily had pulled Evelyn into a passionate kiss. James stood up from the sofa, his mouth opening and closing like a fish. He looked at his best friend, Sirius, asking him the silent question of it was true or not, and Sirius nodded to confirm it. They watched as James fainted, landing on the coffee table with his glasses askew.
"Well that prank didn't end well."
Evelyn smiled fondly at the memory that replayed through her head. She removed the towel from her now dried hair and put it up into a messy bun, before unwrapping the towel from her around her body and getting changed into her pyjamas. That's when she heard the front door slam open.
"Jakob, what have I told you about slamming that fucking door?!" Evelyn yelled through the Manor, exiting her bedroom and standing at the top of the stairs. Evelyn stood frozen in fear when she saw Jakob, Barty Crouch Jr and Peter Pettigrew standing at the front door, their wands aimed at her. Evelyn knew she could take them all out with a flick of her wand, her Auror training from Mad-Eye Moody being the main reason why she was able to but when Evelyn reached into her pyjama pocket for her wand, she realised she had left on her desk.
"Now, don't scream, my darling, it'll only make it worse if you do," Jakob said maliciously, inching towards her.
Flashback end
"I-I should've killed him when I had the chance," Johnny whimpered, hugging his mother tighter. "I-I'm sorry."
"You have no reason to be sorry," said Evelyn sternly, kissing the top of her son's head. "Get some rest, sweetheart. We'll properly catch up soon."
Time jump, three weeks later
January 1996
The winter had been rough for the prisoners at Azkaban. More rain, snow and every from of wet weather slipped through the cracks of their cells. Plus there was the added coldness from the Dementors and the screams and wails of their victims.
However, on one cold night, the Dementors had switched sides. They had sucked the soul out of the Aurors and had released ten highly valued Death Eaters from their cells, including Bellatrix Lestrange, her husband and Fenrir Greyback. Evelyn and Johnny head the Death Eaters cheer and laugh in excitement as they bounded down the stairs. However, Bellatrix rushed back up towards Evelyn and Johnny's cell, out of breath.
"Alohamora!" Bellatrix cried, aiming her wand at the cell door which swung open. Evelyn and Johnny watched in shock as Bellatrix leaned on the wall, puffing and panting. Bellatrix threw the mother and son their respective wands and said, "get yourselves out of here, you idiots! And don't tell anyone I bloody helped you! I'm supposed to be evil!" And Bellatrix ran off.
Evelyn and Johnny looked at each other. Johnny knew his mother was to weak to walk, never mind run. Johnny was weak himself, after living on practically nothing but scraps of bread and a tin of soup a day for three weeks, but he was still a lot stronger than his mother who had been living of it for the last year.
"I'll carry you!" said Johnny urgently, bending his knees. Evelyn nodded, and climbed on her sons back, wrapping her arms around his neck. When Johnny knew his mother was secure, he ran as fast as he could, past the soulless bodies of Aurors, ignoring the wails and the pleas of help from other prisoners and ran straight through the front doors of the Maximum Security Prison.
The wind was howling and rain pelted their bodies as they stood on the island, far away from the main land.
"We have to swim!" Johnny yelled over the wind, walking towards the water.
"Are you fucking crazy, we'll drown in there!" Evelyn yelled, still clutching onto Johnny's back.
"There's a thing called the Bubble-Head Charm! I'm sure you've heard of it!" Johnny yelled back sarcastically, as he got to waist length in the rough water. Johnny aimed his wand at his mother's face and muttered the incarnation, before doing the same with him. No matter how tired he was, Johnny worked extra hard under the water to get him and his mother to safety.
After thirty minutes of swimming, Johnny almost passing out, and Evelyn almost losing her grip on her son, the mother and son reached the main land, where the Bubble-Head Charm had wore off and they were laying face down on the beach.
"I have no idea where we can go," Johnny said tiredly, the wind now having died down and but the rain was still quite heavy.
"Grimmauld Place!" Said Evelyn, almost excitedly, as she sat up, the two now cleaner due to the water. Evelyn pulled her son into a tight embrace, before spinning on the spot. Feeling like he had been sucked through a rather small pipe, Johnny twisted until he and Evelyn popped up outside of number 12 Grimmauld Place. The place was exactly how Johnny remembered, the park was looking rough, vandalism was on every wall, postbox and bin you could see, but he was happy to see it.
When Johnny muttered what he hoped was the right password for the charm to disappear, a sigh of relief left both of their lips when no. 12 appeared with it's serpent knocker. Johnny eagerly knocked on the door, and they could her Mrs. Blacks wails of protests and Remus's desperate shouts as he closed the curtains. Not even ten seconds later, the handsome face of Sirius Black was staring at them with wide eyes, full of tears.
"E-Evie, J-Johnny?"
"It's us, Sirius."
