2: little granddaughter

🤍𓆩♡𓆪☁️

WASHIJŌ INTERNALLY GROANED at the unnecessary attention that his team was getting. usually, people commented about how spectacular his players were.

however, this time, clearly the attention was on the little redhead that was waving and smiling at all the other volleyball players passing by.

"do you think she's a prodigy volleyball player?", hinata questioned.

"obviously not, boke! she's probably just their prodigy manager or something", kageyama scoffed.

tsukishima side-eyed his two idiotic teammates, asking himself what wrong did he do in his past life to be stuck on a team with them.

"you must be ushiwaka-san", satomi suddenly spoke up.

the olive-haired captain directed his attention towards the little tendō, unamused.

     "it's ushijima wakatoshi", he corrected.

it wasn't that ushijima particularly liked or disliked children. however, he felt that having a child following them around at camp would be an unnecessary distraction for his teammates.

     "right, so ushiwaka-san", satomi reiterated.

ushijima ever so slightly furrowed his brows, seeing that the little girl did indeed inherit her brother's sardonic personality.

"you know, I've heard a great deal about you from satori", she continued.

ushijima hummed, as he did not really care what a child thought of him. actually, he didn't really care what most others thought of him, as he was confident in his own abilities.

"he says you're a miracle boy. so does that mean you make miracles happen? are you a fairy?", she asked.

satori softly snickered alongside some of his other teammates who were within earshot.

"I am not", ushijima bluntly answered.

     "oh", satomi disappointedly frowned.

ushijima raised a brow, almost astonished at how quickly the child had lost interest after he had said that.

"satomi, look! our dorms!!", satori exclaimed.

due to satomi still being in primary school, this was her first time seeing dorms.

the little redhead wowed at the rooms with bunk beds, something she had always begged her mom for.

"rooms are already assigned", washijō informed.

"since we've arrived two days early, you make take this day off to explore. tomorrow we start with our usual routine".

goshiki internally cheered, for their coach rarely ever gave them days off. it was a blessing, potentially brought by satori's little angel.

"and tendō, bring her to me once you've finished getting settled in".

"hai!", satori replied, as satomi pouted a little.

"say, ushiwaka, do you want top or bottom bunk?", satori asked.

"I don't have a preference", the olive-haired captain responded.

ōhira, one of the vice captains, and semi didn't particularly mind either.

though considering they weren't sure how long little tendō was going to stay with them, they had all collectively agreed for satori to take the bottom bunk just for safety reasons.

"satomi, this is ōhira reon and semi-semi!!", satori introduced.

"semi eita", the sand-haired boy lowly corrected.

"hello. nice to meet you both", satomi politely bowed.

"nice to meet you too", ōhira smiled, kneeling down to satomi's height, as he offered his hand for the young girl to shake.

semi was slightly hesitant, though he did eventually squat down and offer his hand to satomi as well.

"wow! you both are really tall", satomi stated, having to almost tilt her head back to see them when they're fully standing.

"that's what eating greens does for you!", satori chimed in.

"ewwww", the five year-old gagged.

"anyways, now that you've placed your things down, you should probably take her to coach washijō", ushijima reminded.

satomi swore she was going to give ushijima a piece of her mind later, even though the captain was right.

"oh right!! let's get going then, tomi-chan!"

closely following her big brother, satomi waved goodbye only to semi and ōhira, leaving ushijima confused.

"was it just me, or did she glare at me before leaving?", the captain questioned.

     ōhira simply sighed.

"you're lucky you're talented in volleyball, captain".

"are you sure you don't want me to wait for you outside?", satori questioned for the sixth time.

"yes, I'm sure! I'll be alright. I've got this in the bag", satomi grinned.

"now, I leave mr. bunny in your hands. take good care of him until I come back, okay?", satomi asked, handing her most prized stuff animal off to her slightly concerned brother.

nevertheless, satori didn't have much of a choice, for his sister had entered their coach's temporary office and closed the door behind her.

"I need your parents' numb—"

"grandpa washijō, before you call my parents, can you take me out to lunch first, please?"

the old man scowled at the young child's inability to let him finish his sentence.

"why don't you ask your brother to take you? and how about you give me your parents' phone numbers first?", washijō negotiated.

while it's usually listed in every player's paper records, they were entered into a data sheet created by the other coach: saitō akira. it's more efficient than bringing a stack of papers all the time, he claimed.

and with washijō being at the ripe age of seventy-one, he wasn't exactly the most tech-savvy out of his peers.

"only if you take me out to eat first", the little redhead huffed, not backing down in the slightest.

"I don't have tim—"

"I like chicken nuggets".

washijō's brow twitched at the sight of the irritating girl.

keeping his signature frown on his face, he had simply stood up and headed towards the door.

"well? what are you waiting for?", the shiratorizawa coach scowled.

satomi widely smiled, as she skipped after the demon coach. swinging her arms back and forth, she closely followed the old coach as he led them to a nearby fast food restaurant.

mcdonald's certainly was one of satomi's favorite places to eat at, for they always gave out little toys alongside their happy meals.

"eat fast so you can pack your stuff and be ready to go home once I call them", washijō urged.

"I didn't pack anything but mr. bunny", satomi honestly replied.

"who's mr. bun—never mind. you didn't bring anything? did you not plan ahead?", the coach asked, not having to have ordered anything but some hot tea.

"I knew you wouldn't let me stay", satomi shrugged, "so why bother".

"why go through all this trouble if you knew I wasn't going to let you stay then?"

"it was worth a try", the little girl answered, stuffing her mouth with a nugget after another.

washijō simply hummed, as he watched the young girl finish her four piece mcnugget and fries. she was quick to try to rip open the toy encased in plastic. however, the task proved difficult for her grubby little hands.

"can't even do something this simple?", washijō sighed, snatching the toy and easily ripping through the plastic.

     "I'm only five", satomi argued.

"at five years-old, I could already launch a volleyball and make it across the net".

"oh yeah? how so?", satomi doubtfully questioned.

although to others it might've been any random question asked by a curious five year-old, this was the question that opened pandora's box.

it didn't take much for washijō to realize that he had unintentionally ended up at an ice cream parlor with satomi's little hand in his.

yapping away about his life story, satomi made sure to listen intently and chime in when necessary.

"aw, are you and your grandpa on a little date together?", the ice cream server asked.

     "actually—"

"yes! grandpa washijō's telling me about how he used to play volleyball", satomi answered with a bright smile.

"that's so sweet. you know, nowadays, very little children spend time with their grandparents. you must feel very lucky to have such a cute granddaughter, grandpa".

washijō was about to correct the lady once more, before satomi had tugged at side of his pants.

"grandpa washijō, how about we both pick a flavor and share? that's what satori and I do all the time".

"whatever", washijō grumpily sighed in defeat.

ordering him and his "cute little granddaughter" ice cream, the two took a seat outside on a bench, for the weather was almost too perfect.

"thank you for the lunch and dessert", satomi spoke up, swinging her legs in excitement as she took a big bite of her cookie-dough ice cream.

     "oh, and the stories".

"yeah yeah", washijō brushed off, taking a bite of his vanilla ice cream, as he vaguely remembered the last time he ate some was with his wife, almost decades ago.

"so are you really going to call my parents?", satomi suddenly asked.

"why're you so persistent to stay? it's only a summer away from your brother".

satomi halted in her feasting, as she glanced at washijō with ice cream outlining her mouth.

"mommy once told me that I was an ange—"

"more like a little devil", washijō grumbled.

satomi gave the demon coach a slight side-eye before continuing.

"anyways, she said that I was an angel sent down from heaven to protect my brother".

"that's what all parents say to their children", washijō scoffed.

shaking her head, satomi ate some more ice cream whilst prolonging her time here.

"then she would've just said I was an angel reborn! but no, she said that I was sent down to protect my brother", satomi argued, "there's a difference".

the shiratorizawa coach was starting to realize that crazy did indeed run in the family. although he couldn't deny that what the girl said wasn't true.

"so how am I supposed to protect him if we're like five bajillion miles away from each other, hm?"

"you're an angel", washijō sarcastically answered, "aren't you supposed to telepathically do so or something?"

"I don't know what that means, but not even your miracle boy can do magic, so how can I?", the little redhead clapped back.

"that's diff—never mind", the old man groaned.

"so pleaseeeeee!! I already told you why, so please let me stayyyyy", satomi begged.

washijō gave the pouting little tendō another look, before giving her an ultimatum.

"on one condition. you must take care of yourself and not distract any of my players. let's make a bet", he suggested.

     "what bet?"

"tomorrow is the last day before camp officially starts. if you can get ready by yourself and catch up with us, I'll let you stay".

satomi nearly squealed, as she excitedly hopped off the bench to stand up and stick out her hand.

     "DEAL!"
