"I CAN'T BELIEVE it!" Goldenheart growled as she followed Blizzardpelt and Dovesong down from the top of the Twoleg den. Her yellow fur shone silver in the rising moonlight and her blue eyes glinted in the shadows. "That creep took Moonclaw!"

ย  ย ย  "Hush!" Blizzardpelt snapped at her. "We can't do anything foolish-Moonclaw could be trapped in there!"

ย  ย ย  Dovesong followed Blizzardpelt closely. The sun was beginning to set now, and they could hide in the shadows beside the Twoleg nest. Blizzardpelt led them to a clear wall with a white coating on the inside. Dovesong cautiously reached out to touch it. It was cold and reflected everything in front of it clearly. Huh, Dovesong thought. "What now?" she asked the others. They were investigating, looking under and over things for some sort of entrance.

ย  ย ย  "Hey, look!" Goldenheart exclaimed. "There's an opening here! And great StarClan, it smells good!" She waved her tail to beckon the others. When they came nearer, she whispered, "I think I can smell Twolegs, cats, dogs, and birds. Odd, huh?"

ย  ย ย  Dogs? Dovesong looked into the opening nervously, then looked back at Goldenheart.

ย  ย ย  "Well, what are you waiting for? Let's go!" Goldenheart dove into the opening and fell off the edge gracefully. Blizzardpelt ducked in after her. Dovesong hesitated, but then followed them in when Goldenheart jumped on a ledge in front of the opening and flicked her ears.

ย  ย ย  Goldenheart wasn't wrong about the Twoleg den smelling good. It smelled amazing, really. But the scent was fading. The Twolegs and the animals within the place were nowhere to be found or heard. Dovesong could only smell them. "Come on, let's go. Be careful. There could be Twolegs or dogs anywhere in this place." Blizzardpelt looked around cautiously, then headed for the bigger opening at the end of the den.

ย  ย ย  But Goldenheart interrupted him. "Hey, look! This place is cool." Dovesong looked up at the ledge where she stood, looking into a clear wall. "There's two of me!" She purred with delight.

ย  ย ย  Dovesong jumped onto the ledge beside her. Sure enough, the wall reflected both of them clearly, it looked real. "That's weird," she mewed. It was sort of scary. It looked so real. Could there possibly be two of her? It was so weird.

ย  ย ย  "Stop acting like awestrick kits and hurry up!" Blizzardpelt snapped at them.

ย  ย ย  Dovesong and Goldenheart immediately followed him, leaving the reflective wall behind. They came into a dark tunnel with soft ground. Goldenheart let out a small, satisfied gasp and swished her tail over the ground. "It's so soft!" she exclaimed softly.

ย  ย ย  Blizzardpelt didn't seem to care. "Hurry up," he whispered..

ย  ย ย  Goldenheart sighed and caught up with them. "This place is so cool! Why can't we explore?" she asked.

ย  ย ย  "We're not kittypets. We don't hang around Twoleg dens," Blizzardpelt meowed.

ย  ย ย  "Then why are we here?" Goldenheart asked.

ย  ย ย  "Moonclaw's trapped here!" Dovesong responded, surprised she would ask such a dumb question.

ย  ย ย  "Oh, right. Hey, look! There's food," Goldenheart murmured.

ย  ย ย  Blizzardpelt's muzzle wrinkled in disgust when he followed her gaze to a shiny container of something that looked like rabbit droppings. "We're not eating that!" he growled.

ย  ย ย  "Okay, well, there could be something else. I smelled something really good, didn't you?" Goldenheart wondered.

ย  ย ย  "We're not eating anything from this place!" Dovesong gasped. "We can eat when we get out of here."

ย  ย ย  "It could take all-" Goldenheart stopped when something moved in the shadows. There was a metallic clunking sound. The three cats turned to look at the shadows and saw eyes that unmistakably belonged to a dog. "Great StarClan!" Goldenheart gasped.

ย  ย ย  Then the dog barked. A loud, echoing bark that made all three cats jump. Dovesong prepared to run when she realized the dog was trapped. Good. Dovesong breathed a sigh of relief. But then Goldenheart flicked her tail over Dovesong's ears. "Don't be relieved now. All this commotion could wake the Twolegs!"

ย  ย ย  Sure enough, it seemed like the whole nest awoke. Dovesong gasped when a Twoleg, a female, stumbled out of the dark tunnel and flipped on a light that made Dovesong screw her eyes-stretched wide in the darkness-shut. She opened her eyes to narrow slits and looked at the Twoleg. She was yipping hurriedly to another Twoleg, a male, who immediately pulled out a small object that glowed and tapped a few times, then talked into it.

ย  ย ย  Dovesong didn't have time to question what the Twoleg was doing, because Goldenheart stepped on her tail to get her attention. Dovesong glared at her and hurried after her and Blizzardpelt. They dove into the shadows behind a few soft boulders.ย  "Stay quiet," he hissed.

ย  ย ย  Goldenheart and Dovesong nodded and kept quiet. Movement in the corner of Dovesong's eye made her turn around. "What are you three doing here?" That was Moonclaw. Happiness fizzed through Dovesong. "You woke the dog and the Twolegs up!" she hissed, her green eyes gleaming angrily in the darkness.

ย  ย ย  "Moonclaw!" Goldenheart exclaimed happily. "I'm so glad you're here. Do you know a way out?"

ย  ย ย  Moonclaw looked around, then shook her head. "Wherever you came in?" she suggested.

ย  ย ย  "I would say that," Goldenheart sighed, "but the Twolegs are standing in the way."

ย  ย ย  "We could fight them!" Moonclaw suggested.

ย  ย ย  "That's mouse-brained," Blizzardpelt growled. "The Twolegs can win easily. Has it occurred to you that they're much bigger and stronger than us?"

ย  ย ย  Moonclaw looked back at the Twolegs. "Okay, I guess you're right. Any other ideas?"

ย  ย ย  "Where's Flick? He'll know-"

ย  ย ย  Moonclaw's eyes widened. "No way! I'm not talking or even looking at that creep ever again!"

ย  ย ย  "Come on, Moonclaw, you can't refuse to do this just because of what he did," Dovesong pointed out. "We can't stay here!"

ย  ย ย  Moonclaw looked at her fondly. "You're starting to sound like your normal self again. Okay, fine. We can go. But I can't promise that he'll be any help to us."

ย  ย ย  Dovesong smiled back at her. I wonder what I was like before, she thought, suddenly feeling a deep longing to be normal again.

ย  ย ย  "Let's just go," Goldenheart decided, turning around to leave from behind the soft boulders. Immediately she let out an alarmed yowl. Dovesong and Blizzardpelt turned around to see Goldenheart struggling in a Twoleg's grip as it took her away. The other Twoleg reached toward Dovesong and Blizzardpelt. Blizzardpelt sprang out of the way, but Dovesong was too slow and was grabbed by the Twoleg. She let out a furious yowl and clawed at the Twoleg's bony paws, but she was quickly put into a smaller den-looking thing and was trapped inside.

ย  ย ย  "No!" Moonclaw cried. "Get to safety, Blizzardpelt!"

ย  ย ย  The Twoleg that had captured Dovesong opened the den again and waved its paw to beckon her out. Dovesong bristled and hissed, and the Twoleg just reached in and gently took her in its paws, taking her out. She growled and tried to get out of its grip, but it didn't seem to care. She felt its paw touch her injured leg, and then felt it brushed her head fur when its paw hovered over the wound on her head.

ย  ย ย  She hissed and scratched its paw, and it quickly recoiled. It gently put her back in the den when it let out a pained yelp and the other Twoleg yelped angrily at it.

ย  ย ย  Dovesong stared after the Twoleg and was surprised to see that Moonclaw and Blizzardpelt were gone. She looked around, hoping they hadn't been captured, too. Instead she saw Moonclaw struggling to free Goldenheart, biting and clawing at the web-like covering that kept them inside. Soon she was able to get it unlocked and Goldenheart burst out.

ย  ย ย  Moonclaw moved to Dovesong's den.

ย  ย ย  Dovesong rushed out immediately, and ducked out of the way when a Twoleg yelped in surprise and tried to grab her again. She bristled with fear and ducked into a small space under a soft boulder. Where's Goldenheart?

ย  ย ย  Blue eyes gleamed in the darkness beside her. "I'm here. We should get out of here as quickly as we can. Moonclaw and Blizzardpelt can run after us; they're smart enough to get free."

ย  ย ย  "We have to make sure they follow us!" Dovesong exclaimed.

ย  ย ย  Goldenheart blinked. "Oh, yeah. Well, let's not waste any time!" She slipped out from under the soft boulder and called to Blizzardpelt and Moonclaw. "Let's get out of here before we can't! Follow me!"

ย  ย ย  Moonclaw and Blizzardpelt exchanged looks, then followed Goldenheart and Dovesong toward the opening in the nest. They all slipped out quickly inside the humid night air. "I couldn't be more glad to be in this humid weather!" Goldenheart exclaimed. "I thought we were doomed!"

ย  ย ย  Moonclaw purred. "Same here. And thanks."

ย  ย ย  "You're welcome," Dovesong mewed.

ย  ย ย  "Let's get out of here," Blizzardpelt decided. "Let's go." He waved his tail to beckon the others.

ย  ย ย  The three she-cats looked at each other, relieved but also scared for the rest of the journey, then followed Blizzardpelt away from the Twoleg den. They ran away from it and towards the other Twoleg dens, toward the other end of the Twolegplace where the moon had risen.

ย  ย ย  As Dovesong followed her companions, she heard paw steps behind her. She turned around to see the ginger kittypet, Pearl. "What are you doing here?" she asked, making the others turn around.

ย  ย ย  "I didn't expect that you would still be here!" Pearl exclaimed with delight. "Where are you going? Maybe I can help!" Her eyes shone with excitement. "I've lived here my entire life, I think I can show you around."

ย  ย ย  "Oh, no. We don't plan on staying here," Moonclaw told her. "Sorry."

ย  ย ย  "Oh, okay. I can still help you around," Pearl offered.

ย  ย ย  "That's a nice offer," Dovesong meowed, mostly to Blizzardpelt, who had led them on this journey.

ย  ย ย  "I don't think so," Blizzardpelt grunted with narrowed eyes. "We can get around just fine, thanks."

ย  ย ย  Pearl sighed. "Okay. Well, I hope you have a good time!" With that, she left, ducking under a fence and disappearing into the darkness.

ย  ย ย  Dovesong tipped her head to one side. I doubt we're going to have a good time if we already struggled so much. But then, maybe not. Moonclaw says I'm more like myself anyway. Maybe that's a sign that this is going to be fine. She swished her tail happily and turned to follow the others.
