98. truth
Day had come by the time Bellamy entered our quarters. I stared up at him from where I sat on our bed, trying to restrain myself from reaching out to him.
"Someone pay your bail?" I muttered, looking back down to flip a page in the book I was currently attempting to read.
Bellamy shifted uncomfortably, "Pike won." he whispered.
My eyes paused on the page, my heart dropping to my stomach. After spending most of the morning trying to figure out how my brother's ashes had mysteriously disappeared, I had voted in the election this morning, like everyone else that could. I had voted for Kane, but apparently the majority voted the other way.
I finally looked up at him, "So you're his bitch now?" I questioned, instantly feeling guilty as a look of hurt flashed across Bellamy's face.
His throat bobbed as he shook his head, "He's doing what's best for us."
"He's doing what's best for him." I corrected, locking my eyes with his.
He broke first, shifting his eyes to the ground, "I have to go." he muttered, looking back up at me briefly, "Can we please talk later?"
I locked my jaw, resisting the urge to be difficult, "Yeah." I finally answered, turning my eyes back to my book before Bellamy could say another word. He left a few seconds later, the door quietly clicking behind him.
If I had known what he was on his way to do, I would have never let him leave.

After Bellamy had left, I had sat wallowing in anger for a while before deciding to make myself productive.
I had found my way outside to the garden, offering up my assistance. I needed the fresh air, and medical was slow today so I wanted to offer my help where it was needed. Lyla, our head gardener and crop grower gladly assigned me to harvesting some of our ready crops.
I was in the middle of picking vegetables when a figure stepped in front of me, casting a shadow across my line of vision. I looked up, using my hand to shield the sun from my eyes. Through a squint I could see that It was Jasper standing in front of me.
I smiled, wiping the dirt from my hands onto my pants, "Hey, Jasper."
He gave me a small smile, but I could tell by the look on his face something was wrong, "Can we-uh...can we talk?"
I gave him a weary look as I pushed myself to my feet, "Are you okay?" I questioned.
He glanced around for a moment before pulling me away from the garden, to a part of the grounds that were less busy.
I stared at him, my brows furrowed in worry as I waited for him to start speaking. "Jasper?" I proved softly, reaching out to touch his arm.
He shook his head, tears welling in his eyes, "I'm sorry." He whispered, his voice breaking.
My heart thudded in my chest, "For what?" I questioned, "What are you sorry for?"
"I took them." he muttered, guilt covering his face.
I still had no idea what he was talking about, "Took what? Jasper, what-"
"Finn's ashes." he cried, his eyes casting downward, "I took them and I was holding them and I fell outside of the dropship and I-"
I cut him off, not needing to hear anymore. My first initial reaction was to cry, or yell or walk away, but I let myself breathe for a minute. When I calmed myself down, I didn't question why Jasper took them or how he had known I had them, but instead I pulled him into a hug. He was tense at first, shocked at my reaction.
I was hurt, upset and confused that spreading my brother's ashes had been taken away from me, but at the same time I was relieved. Relieved that I didn't have to go through the pain of spreading what was left of him, relieved that he was finally at rest. I was especially relieved that he would forever be at the drop ship, my safe haven. Knowing my brother was put to rest there made it even more special. Truth be told, that is where he would have wanted to be anyway.
"I'm sorry." he whispered again, his tears soaking into the shoulder of my shirt.
I nodded, pulling back so I could look at him, "I know."

The rest of my afternoon was spent in the garden with Jasper. I had convinced him to help me harvest. Really, I didn't need the help, but I wanted to keep him occupied, take his mind off of everything. Octavia had joined us at some point, and soon enough it felt like old times.
"You know," Octavia started, flicking a piece of dirt toward me, "You're like a freaking legend around here...risen from the dead and all."
I let out a laugh as I brushed the dirt from my face, "I was never dead." I pointed out, a grin coming to my face as Jasper laughed.
Octavia smiled as she looked over at me, giving me a small shrug, "Well we all thought you were so just go with it okay?"
I was about to speak again, only to be cut off when yelling was heard by the front gates. Octavia and I locked eyes before jumping to our feet, eager to see what was going on.
The gates were opening, and our people were entering camp. I hadn't been aware that anyone had even left in the first place.
Octavia and I shared another look before heading for the main gates. As the returnees filed through, my eyes landed on Bellamy. My breath caught in my throat at the look of him, at the look of all of them for that matter. They were all covered in blood...but it didn't look like theirs.
Octavia and I made our way toward Bellamy, worry in both of our eyes, "Bell!" Octavia called as we approached, "Are you okay?"
Bellamy nodded, his eyes landing on me, "I'm fine." he muttered, beginning to push past us.
My hand shot out, grabbing a hold of his arm, "Bellamy, what the hell happened?"
His dark eyes met mine, and I felt myself shrink back slightly. No words left his mouth as he pulled from my grasp, pushing past myself and Octavia.
Octavia let out a small scoff, "What's the matter with him?" she spat, confusion and anger lacing her words.
I let out a small sigh as I shook my head, "Guess I better find out." I muttered, already looking for Bellamy in the crowd. I spotted him instantly, he hadn't made it very far.
I gave Octavia a small nod before heading after my boyfriend. He had stopped moving by the time I reached him, and was standing watching the others, a sad look on his face.
"We need to talk." I announced, grabbing a hold of his arm so he couldn't leave. He glanced down at me, his eyes showing he was exhausted. I felt myself soften at the sight of him. But as much as I wanted to pull him into a hug, I needed to know what was going on.
I shook my head, lost at what was going on with him, "Bell, you can talk to me." I promised, my grip falling down his arm to take a hold of his hand. His fingers curled around mine, just as his mouth opened to speak, but another voice cut in.
"Everybody listen up!" Pike stepped onto a small platform, elevating himself above the rest of us as he began speaking.
I watched with narrowed eyes as he addressed the people of Arkadia, claiming he wanted to create a "self sustaining, prosperous and safe Arkadia".
The crowd let out cheers of agreement, causing me to look around in shock. How could so many people support him.
As he continued speaking, things only got worse. With each word that left his mouth, my hand, that was still gripped in Bellamy's, began to loosen.
Horror ran through my veins at Pike's words. They had attacked the Grounders.
Tears filled my eyes as I slowly dropped my hand from Bellamy's, my head whipping toward his. The minute his eyes met mine, I knew what he had done.
A choked gasp escaped from my lips as I took a step back, staring incredulously at my boyfriend as more cheers sounded around camp.
"Avery-" Bellamy started, trying to take a step toward me.
I took another step back, sticking my arm out in front of me as to stop Bellamy from coming any closer, "Don't touch me." I whispered. In that moment I could feel my heart breaking, breaking for the man I thought I knew, but maybe I didn't, not really at least.
With one final look at Bellamy, I turned and rushed back toward the Ark, needing to get away from him, from everything.
Once out of the immediate crowd, my eyes landed on Octavia and Lincoln who were standing, watching Pike with dark eyes.
I couldn't speak to them, not at the moment. I was too angry, too upset to hold a solid conversation. All I could muster was a quiet apology to Lincoln. His people had been attacked at the hands of my boyfriend.
I didn't know where we went from here. I didn't know where Bellamy and I stood. But what I did know was that Pike needed to stop, and I was full willing to play my hand in doing so.
