Finn was right, his idea was a bad one, a really bad one. He wanted to lure the Reapers towards our camp to distract the Grounders so to say. We all knew the plan was risky, so that's probably why Finn was sending me back to camp rather than letting me follow along. We had gone over our options, and although risky, it was safer for me to make the trek back to camp alone.

"Do you have enough ammo?" Finn asked as we prepared to leave the safety of Lincoln's cave.

I glanced down at my gun, "Let me check." I muttered, pulling out the clip to see how many bullets I had left. I froze, zero, I had zero bullets.

I guess my face gave it away because Finn caught it instantly, "What's wrong?"

I but my lip, giving him a sheepish look, "I don't have any." I mumbled so quietly I thought he didn't hear me at first.

But of course he heard me, "How do you not have any ammo?" he demanded.

I threw my arms up, "I forgot to check the clip before I left! Bellamy was distracting me and I don't know, I'm not a gun expert okay?"

Finn shook his head in annoyance, "I can't let you roam through the forest with no protection..." he trailed off, trying to think of what we could do.

Lincoln, who wasn't impressed with the hold up, cut in, "We don't have time for this," he grumbled, rushing across the cave, picking something up before shoving it into my hands, "Here"

I stared down at the object, it was a bow and arrow. I had read about these in books and I had seen the Grounders use them but I had never actually seen one up close. I glanced up at Lincoln, "What do you want me to do with this?"

He furrowed his brows, "I want you to use it to protect yourself, what else?"

I turned it over in my hands, "But I don't know how to shoot it."

He turned me towards the exit, "You'll figure it out. If you hurry up you hopefully won't have to use it at all."

I sighed as I threw the strap of the empty gun over one shoulder as I threw the quiver over the other. The bottle of medicine was shoved into my jacket pocket.

Before I could leave I spun around, pulling Finn into a tight hug, "I love you. Be safe." I mumbled, pressing my face into his shoulder.

He hugged me back, so tight I could feel his heart beating rapidly, he was terrified, "I love you too. I'll see you soon."

We pulled away and I gave Lincoln a small wave before climbing up the ladder that lead out of the cave. Once I was outside I began running. I ran faster than I ever had, keeping my eyes and ears open as I made my way through the dark forest.

The bow was clutched tightly in my hand. I was really hoping I wouldn't have to use it, but I wanted to be prepared no matter what. As I ran all that could run through my mind was whether or not Finn was okay. I was terrified that he wouldn't make it back to camp tonight.

Soon enough, the lights of camp came into my view and I let out a small sigh of relief. The feeling of relief didn't last long however, as the outside of out gates soon came into view. There were Grounders, hundreds of them at least, making their way towards our walls.

I pushed myself to hurry, slipping into one of the fox holes. I all but threw myself into it, letting out rapid breaths as I tried to calm down, my eyes were closed as I focused on my breathing.

"Where the hell did you come from?" My eyes shot open to see Nathan Miller hovering overtop of me, starring down at me in confusion.

I sat up, pulling the bow onto my lap, "It's a long story." I paused, my eyes falling back out into the forest which was covered in Grounders, "How are we doing?" I asked.

Miller was back in position, his gun pointed into the forest, "Bad. We're running low and ammo and they're closing in." he answered, pausing to take a shot at an incoming Grounder. As he went to take another shot, his gun let off a click meaning he was out of ammo.

"Damnit!" he snapped, fumbling to insert another clip.

"Miller," I muttered in fear, watching as a Grounder moved closer and closer to where the two of us were hiding, "Miller, hurry!"

He let out a grunt as he tried to work faster, "Avery, I'm trying but-"

I didn't wait for him any longer, I decided to raise the bow. Lincoln told me I would figure it out and I guess now was the time. I placed an arrow into it, aiming towards the oncoming Grounder, and then, I fired.

I let out a gasp of shock as did Miller as the arrow lodge itself in the Grounder's chest, causing him to fall to the ground.

"Where did you learn how to do that?" Miller asked, his gun now loaded and pointed back out to the battlefield.

I was as shocked as he was, "I have no idea." I answered as another boy entered the fox hole with us, "I got more ammo." he breathed as he took a spot beside Miller.

I looked at the two boys, "Are you guys good?"

The other boy nodded as he loaded his gun, "We are for now, but I don't know how much longer we can hold them off."

I grabbed my empty gun that I had dropped, "Just hold off a little longer okay? You'll have a break soon."

Miller looked back at me as I began to leave, "What's going to happen soon?"

I smirked, "You'll see."

---

As I entered back into the main part of camp I was instantly greeted by Clarke, she was basically the only other one out there. "Avery." she breathed in relief as I handed her the medicine. She looked behind me, obviously expecting to see Finn, "Where's-" her eyes were panicked.

I gave her a reassuring smile, "He's coming."

Call it twin telepathy but at that very moment a deafening scream ripped through the air above all other. It was the Reapers, Finn and Lincoln had done it.

Not even seconds later, Finn came rushing through one of the fox holes, his chest falling rapidly with every breath he took.

"Oh my God." Clarke gasped as she ran into his arms. After a few seconds she pulled back, looking Finn in the eyes, "What did you do?"

My brother shrugged, "I kicked the hornet's nest."

Clarke was in shock, "You brought the Reapers?"

Finn nodded, "I just bought us some time. How's Raven?"

Clarke shook her head, her eyes full of sadness and for a second I feared Raven was gone. "She's not good." she finally said, as the 3 of us began moving towards the drop ship, "And the rockets aren't ready yet. Jasper's working on them now."

Finn paused, "Wait, Jasper?" he asked. Clarke nodded and Finn's face clouded with worry, "What's plan B?"

"Jasper was plan B."

---

My hand was gripping Raven's limp one as Clarke inserted the syringe of medicine into her hip. I knew if this medicine didn't kick in soon we would lose Raven.

The drop ship was filled with worried chatter of teenagers as we had all crammed back into the place it started to seek shelter. The noise outside was getting louder, meaning the attack was getting closer.

"Clarke!" Miller called as he entered the ship, holding onto his shoulder which had been hit, "They're taking down the gate!"

"Good," Jasper said, pulling himself up from under the ship, "Cause I did it." he said with conviction before adding, " I think."

The sound of crashing metal filled the air, meaning one thing, the gate was down.

"I'm closing that door!" Miller yelled, pointing to the large metal door, the only thing that would keep the Grounders out of the drop ship.

"Wait!" Clarke yelled, standing up. Finn and I moved to follow her. "We've still got people out there. Bellamy's not back yet."

My heart dropped as I ran after her, "What do you mean he's not back? Where did he go?" I questioned as we moved outside.

Clarke sighed, "I'm not sure where he is." That's all she gave me as stood at the end of the drop ship ramp. All around us was commotion, there was gun fire, yelling, grenades, it was unlike anything I had ever seen. "Alright!" Clarke yelled over the noise, "Jasper did it, everyone in the drop ship, now!"

"Look out!" Finn yelled as he grabbed the two of us, pulling us behind bags that had been piled up to use as protection. Miller stood on the ramp of the ship, firing at oncoming Grounders as kids were being killed left and right, it was a disaster.

My heart was beating a thousand beats a minute as I looked around at the scene. We didn't deserve this, no matter what we did on the Ark, we were still just kids.

"There he is!" Finn yelled, breaking me from my thoughts. I turned my head to see Bellamy entering through one of the fox holes on the other side of camp.

I perked up, my eyes meeting with Bellamy's, "RUN!" I screamed.

Clarke shook her head, her eyes wide with fear, "He's never going to make it."

"Bellamy, hurry!" I yelled again, my voice cracking with fear.

Bellamy did just that. He began rushing towards us, picking up a gun on the way, attempting to fire it at a Grounder that was coming towards him, but it was empty. My heart dropped.

The Grounder grabbed a hold of him, sending a fist into Bellamy's face and then a blow to his stomach.

My breath was caught in my throat, "No." I whispered, tears streaming down my face.

"He's killing him." Clarke cried as the Grounder continued beating on Bellamy.

In a move I was never expecting, my brother stood up, grabbing a gun from a passing kid, "Give me that." he ordered, ripping it from the kid's hands.

He cocked the gun, sending a shot in the direction of the Grounder attacking Bellamy. I was in shock, I didn't ever think I would see my brother with a gun, let alone using a gun to save Bellamy's life.

At Finn's shot, the Grounder turned his attention from Bellamy to my brother. Finn rushed towards him, tackling the Grounder to the ground.

"Finn!" I screamed, trying to follow after him. Clarke was screaming for him too, but it was no use.

Nathan Miller had a hold on my arm, keeping me from chasing after my brother. I watched with teary eyes as Bellamy and Finn attacked the Grounder.

"Look!" Miller yelled, pointing to the scene unfolding by the gates, "You can't save everyone." he announced to Clarke and I, "Let's go!"

I was frozen in place, Clarke wasn't moving either. Finn looked over to the two of us, his eyes full of fear. He gave Clarke a small nod, signalling her to go. She took that as he cue, rushing towards the ship. But I still couldn't move.

"Avery go!" Finn screamed, dodging an oncoming hit from the Grounder.

At the sound of my name Bellamy looked in my direction, his eyes meeting mine. He gave me the same look Finn had given Clarke, telling me I had to leave him. But I didn't want to, I would have rather died out there then leave him and my brother. But obviously, I didn't get to make that choice.

"Avery!" Miller yelled as he rushed back towards me, "We need to go, now!"

My eyes moved to the dozens of Grounders that were storming towards the ship.

"I can't," I cried, "I can't leave them!"

Miller, who I had never been really close to, pulled me into his arms, ignoring the bullet wound he had to his shoulder, and all but carried me back into the drop ship. I was sobbing as the two of us collapsed to the metal floor.

They were gone. Not only had I lost my brother, but I had lost the person I had come to realize I cared for the most in this world other than Finn and Octavia. I had lost the man I was in love with.
