118. safe passage

I'm not on the beach anymore, but instead back at Arkadia.

The sky is dark, but the place that was once abandoned when we left mere days ago is now full of life.

Fires litter the field beyond our walls as hundreds if not thousands of people mill about. Tents are set up for as far as I can see.

Upon closer inspection, I realize that the people beyond our walls are not my people...they're Grounders.

The realization hits me harder than I could handle, and I physically feel myself stumble backward. It's the night Finn died.

I looked around frantically, desperate to know what exactly is going on. Has he already died? Or is he still out there, alone and afraid? My most prominent question is what in the world am I doing here.

"Aves!"

My lungs feel as if they had filled with water and finding breath does not come easily. It's him.

Slowly, I turn ever so slightly, and when I do I am met with the scene of my twin brother walking toward me, a small grin on his face.

"What's the matter with you?" he questions, "You look like you just saw a ghost."

The chants from the Grounders begin to fill the night sky. They're calling for Finn.

"Finn!" I snap, finally coming out of my trance. "You need to go!" I order, reaching out to grab onto him.

My hand meets the solid flesh of his upper arm, not going right through like I expected. He isn't some apparition, he's really here.

He lets out a loud laugh, the one I have missed so much since I lost him. "What are you talking about?" he questions, looking around as if all of this is remotely normal.

I look into my brother's brown eyes that so closely resemble my own. They're full of life once again, something I hadn't seen for months.

"Finn, please." I beg, "Please, you need to go."

My heart is pounding against my rib cage, the anxiety building within. I can't let him die again, I can't lose him again.

"Come on!" I all but scream, still gripping onto him as I try to pull him away from the camp. "I know where we can go. I can keep you safe. I can-"

"Avery." Finn's voice no longer holds any amusement, but instead is laced with seriousness. "I am going to die."

The terror rises as I shake my head. "No!" I snap. "You're not going to die, Finn. I can save you this time, I can do better."

"It's time."

This is a new voice that speaks this time, but it's one that I recognize instantly. His voice automatically causes me to relax ever so slightly.

"Bellamy!" I gasp, turning to look at him as he approached Finn and I, "Bell, you've got to help me. You've got to help me get Finn out of here. We can go-"

Bellamy's eyes are dark as he removes my hand from Finn's arm. "No." he answers, moving to pin Finn's hands behind his back. "It's time." he repeated.

I feel like I have been hit in the stomach, all the air knocked from my lungs. "What are you doing!?" I scream, scrambling to follow after them as Bellamy begins to drag Finn away from me. "Stop!" I pleaded, "Stop! You can't! I-I just got him back!"

Finn looks back at me, his eyes now full of terror. "Aves, help me." he whispers, his words causing my heart to break.

"Bellamy!" My voice comes out sounding strangled as I finally reach them. Grasping onto Bellamy's arm I begin pleading once again. "Bell, stop! Please, just let him go."

We're at the front gates now, a few more steps and Finn will be dragged out of the safety of camp.

"Let-him-go!" Between each word I find myself beating on Bellamy's arm, praying that he will release my brother.

"Ready?"

My body whips around to see Charles Pike walking toward us, a triumphant look on his face.

Bellamy nods, "Yes, sir."

"What the hell are you doing!" I demand, rounding on Bellamy. "Don't let him do this to you again, Bellamy. Don't let him control you!"

Pike finally notices me and gives me a sad smile. "This is your fault." he announces, nodding for Bellamy to take Finn away.

"No!" I beg, trying to follow but I am rooted in place.

"It's your fault that your brother is dead." Pike reaffirms. "You didn't help him. You let the Grounders kill him. He tried to tell you what he was going to do, that he was going to give himself up. You should have known, you are his twin after all."

Tears are cascading down my cheeks as I shake my head. "No." I whisper.

Pike nods, turning me so I can see out into the field beyond our camp. The light from the Grounder fires light up the scene before me.

Instead of one wooden pole like the night Finn died, there's now four. Four figures are tied to them.

It takes me a moment, but I soon realize who they are. Because now, instead of just my brother, Sinclair, Lincoln and Everette join him.

My heart drops as I turn my head to look at Pike. "Don't do this." I plead, still attempting to will my body to move. I need to get to them. "Don't."

Pike lets out a small hum. "They all died because of you." he taunts. "You could have ended all of this, but instead you let your friends die."

Nausea washes over me as I look out toward the field with teary eyes. Is he right.

"Now!"

Pike's booming voice causes me to jump. I refocus my eyes, watching as a figure walks up to Sinclair.

The figure is Bellamy and he's holding a gun.

"NO!" I scream, my voice ripping through my throat. "BELLAMY, NO!"

He ignores me, raises the gun and then fires. Sinclair slumps against the pole- dead.

Bellamy repeated the process, putting bullets into both Lincoln and Everette's skulls before moving down the line.

Finally, he ends up in front of my brother. Finn looks exactly like he did the night he died, he looks terrified. And I feel broken knowing I'm not there.

"I love you." I whisper, knowing my brother can't hear me, but needing to say it nonetheless.

My hands are shaking as they grip onto the fence in front of me.

Slowly, Bellamy raises the gun to my brother's head and then he pulls the trigger.

"NO!"

"Avery!"

My eyes opened with a jolt and soon enough I could feel hands gripping onto me. Sunlight assaulted my vision, but in broken beams, as if it was shining through something.

My head was swimming as my eyes tried to adjust. Tears soaked my cheeks as my breathing struggled to get under control.

"Avery."

It was the same voice I heard when I first awoke. As my eyes scan the scene in front of me, I realized it was Bellamy.

He was watching me with a worried expression, holding onto me tightly as he stared down at me. Gently, he raised a hand and wipes the tears from my face.

"What happened?" I demanded, pushing myself up into a sitting position and away from Bellamy. I tried to ignore the hurt look that covered his face.

"You were screaming." Jasper answered, and it looked like he had just awoken himself.

I took this as my chance to look around at where we are. We're not on the beach anymore, that's for sure. Instead, it looks like we're in some kind of metal box. Small holes litter the roof and walls allow the sunshine to leak through.

"My swords gone." Octavia suddenly exclaimed, her eyes dancing frantically across the space in search of it.

"Guns too." Bellamy added from where he was standing next to me.

"Where are we?" I questioned, hoping someone had more of a clue than I did.

No one answered, seeming to me like no one else knew. Octavia let out a grunt before pounding her fists on the side of the box, causing a loud banging sound to reverberate throughout.

Suddenly, noise could be heard from beyond the box. I let out a small gasp as Bellamy's hand fastened around my upper arm and pulled me to my feet.

Just as I stood to my full height, the doors opened and sunlight flooded in. All of us inched back ever so slightly, bringing our hands up to shield our eyes from the sun.

Bellamy took a small step so he was standing in front of me, and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Always the protector.

Through the bright sun, I could see a figure making their way toward us. After a few strides, the person was close enough for us to see.

Octavia let out a relieved sigh. "Luna."

My eyes finally adjusted to the sun, and I could see that it was a woman standing in front of us. She didn't look very old, maybe a few years older than all of us, but she carried herself in a very mature way.

"Where's Lincoln?" she asked.

Clarke looked to Octavia who shook her head slightly. "Lincoln is dead."

Luna tilted her chin downward slightly as her eyes fluttered closed for a moment, taking in the news of her friend's death.

It was quickly interrupted by Clarke who took a small step toward her. "Lincoln said you would help us."

Luna's eyes opened and she focused her attention on Clarke. "Did he?"

Clarke wore a hopeful smile as she nodded. "Luna, you're the last of your kind. The last Nightblood."

A look of realization dawned upon Luna's face. "So Lexa's dead as well."

"Her spirit's chosen you to become the next commander." Clarke explained. "Titus entrusted me with the flame to give to you."

Unlike we had all expected, Luna did not look happy to heart this news. "Then he should have told you that I left my Conclave swearing to never kill again."

Bellamy looked over the Jasper and I, a nervous look on his face. We all knew that this was probably not going to end as we had hoped.

"You don't have to kill." Clarke promised, "To lead is your birthright. How you lead is your choice." She then pulled out the Flame, moving toward Luna. "Here."

Luna looked down, reaching out to cup Clarke's hand in her own as she examined the Flame. "I recognize the sacred symbol, " she explained,  "But what is that?"

"This is the Flame." Clarke explained, "It hold the spirits of the commanders, of Lexa. Will you take it and become the next commander?"

Luna's eyes flickered between the Flame and Clarke, her expression steady. Finally, she spoke her answer. "No."

And just like that all of our hope was crushed. Luna closed Clarke's hand around the Flame before turning and leaving us alone in the box. Clarke spun around, looking to the rest of us with wild eyes.

"Wait!" she called, turning to rush after Luna.

We all followed suit, quickly making our way out of the box and out into whatever was beyond. As we stepped out, each and every one of us froze in shock.

We were no longer on land...but rather in the middle of the ocean.
