107. hostility

Dusk had begun to settle outside, leaving the group of us huddled around a small fire within the cave. I sat beside Kane, my eyes focused on Bellamy who was distanced from the group. I absentmindedly listened as the others discussed what was next. There were talks of handing Pike over in order to have the blockade lifted. But there were also concerns that it wouldn't be that easy. Bellamy had revealed to all of us that Lexa had been killed. If what he said was true, who knew where we stood with the Grounders now.

Bellamy remained silent from where he sat, his hands chained. His face was still bloodied and bruised. Every time I looked at him I felt a pang of sadness.

Suddenly, he caught my gaze. He focused on me for a moment, only being interrupted when a voice came through one of the walkies.

"Bellamy," the voice called. "Come in. It's Monty." We all paused, turning to look at the radio. "I'm in trouble." Monty announced. "Please say you still have your radio."

Sinclair reached out, taking a hold of the device. Kane held out his hand, prodding Sinclair to pass it to him. But Sinclair shook his head slightly, still holding onto the radio. "If we respond and Pike's listening-"

"-Go to channel 7." It was the first time Bellamy had spoken since he re-entered the cave after the two of us argued outside. When we all looked to him with scepticism, he elaborated. "'Please say you still have your radio.' It's seven words after the word trouble."

Bellamy wore an impatient look as no one followed his instructions. "It's code." he explained. "Go to 7."

Kane looked away from Bellamy, looking to Sinclair and then to me. I gave him a small nod, believing that Bellamy was telling the truth. I really hoped he wasn't going to prove me wrong.

Sinclair turned the dial, switching the channel before handing the radio to Kane.

Soon enough, Monty's voice came through the channel. "Bellamy, are you there?"

Kane slowly raised the device to his mouth. "Monty, it's Kane." he paused for a moment. "What's wrong?"

"Pike knows that I helped you get out." Monty's words caused my heart to drop. If Pike knew, then Monty was in trouble.

Kane kept his composure. "Can you get to the dropship?"

"I think so."

"Good. Go there." Kane instructed. "I'll bring you in." his eyes flickered to the rest of us for a moment. "Stay off the radio. Over and out."

"Hold on," Harper proclaimed, "What if it's a trap and Pike's waiting?"

I didn't want to believe that Monty would betray us- again- but it wouldn't completely surprise me. I felt like I couldn't trust anyone anymore.

Kane pushed himself to his feet. "That's why I'm going alone."

Octavia followed after him. "Like hell you are."

Miller then stood, looking down to check his gun. "I'm with Octavia. Monty saved our lives. I'm going too."

"Me too." I announced, standing up after the others, my hand hovering over the gun that resided in my waistband.

Kane turned to look at us, seemingly unimpressed with our antics. "No you're not." he rejected. "If this really is a trap, I'm not marching our entire insurgency into it."

Octavia pulled on her jacket. "To stop me you're going to have to kill me." She still wore the same stone-cold expression as before.

"She hopes it's a trap." Bellamy proclaimed, a knowing look covering his face.

Octavia shot her brother a quick glare. "He's coming too." she barked. "We need a hostage to trade for Monty."

I felt my heart drop ever so slightly. I was furious with Bellamy, don't get me wrong, but I didn't want to send him back to Pike.

"That's a good plan." Kane nodded after considering it for a moment. "He stays chained. Gag him." he instructed.

I met Bellamy's eye briefly before turning my attention back to Kane. "Is that really-"

"He's the enemy." Kane snapped, staring me down for a moment, awaiting my rebuttal. When I didn't give one, he looked to Miller and Bryan. "Do what I said."

I let out an exasperated sigh, raking my hand through my hair as I turned from the scene, not wanting to watch Bellamy being gagged and chained like a prisoner.

I knew that the minute they left that cave, it could very well be the last time I'd see him, for a while at least. If he was being given to Pike, who knew what would happen.

I wanted to grab onto him and not let go, to tell him I loved him. But I couldn't do that. The pain and anger I felt toward Bellamy still outweighed anything else...and that hurt the most out of everything.

---

It was dark by the time movement could be heard from outside of our hideaway. My eyes flickered toward the opening, quickly meeting with Miller's before refocusing on who or what was making their way toward us.

Miller, Bryan, Harper and I had stayed hidden while the others had gone to retrieve Monty. I had sat with a gun in my lap, anxiety and nerves overtaking me the entire time we waited.

But now, as the footsteps got closer, I was almost more nervous than I was before. Would they all come back? Would they all be okay?

I didn't have to wonder much longer, as seconds later, Octavia stepped into view. I felt myself relax...Pike hadn't killed her. Behind her was Monty, and once again my anxiety began to fade. He was on our side, for real this time.

When Kane didn't follow immediately after Monty, I felt myself quickly growing concerned. I wouldn't have put it past him to turn himself in so others could live.

My thoughts of Kane were quickly diverted when the third and final figure walked into the cave. He was staggered behind the other two, entering close to a minute after them. He was no longer chained and gagged, yet he wore a somber expression.

It was then that I truly felt myself relax. Bellamy was okay, and he was here.

As much as I wanted to jump up and run to him, I restrained myself and remained on the ground. I hadn't forgive him- not yet.

Despite my refusal to greet him, Bellamy immediately focused on me, beginning to make his way toward me.

I turned my head away slightly, trying to deter him from coming any closer. Bellamy ignored the cue, coming to a stop in front of me. "Hey." He whispered, his voice sounding small.

I bit down on my bottom lip before forcing myself to look up at him. "What are you doing here?" I demanded, trying to not let my voice break. "Where's Kane?"

Bellamy looked slightly dejected from my comment, but brushed it off nonetheless. "We turned Pike over to the Grounders. Kane's going with them to Polis."

Finally. Maybe Bellamy had chosen the right side for once.

I didn't show my excitement that Pike had been surrendered, instead I just nodded. "You turning him in doesn't just fix everything that happened." I muttered, keeping my eyes locked with his.

Bellamy's eyes morphed into certain sadness as he let out a small sigh. "Avery-"

Whatever he was going to say, I didn't get to hear it. All of our attention was quickly pulled to the radio that resided beside Sinclair. The voice coming through it sounded panicked. It was Jasper.

"Is anybody there! Come in! Please someone!"

I pushed myself to my feet, following after Bellamy who was already rushing toward where everyone was congregated.

"It's Jasper." I announced, my worried eyes meeting with similar expressions on all of my friends faces. When no one made a move for the radio, I went to reach for it. "Pick it up!" I exclaimed.

Bellamy reached out, catching my arm before I could take a hold of the device. "Wait." he ordered, his eyes focused on the radio. "It could be a trap."

I scoffed, "A trap?" I echoed, looking at him in confusion. "Jasper has no reason to trap us." I argued, "He was never working with Pike...even he knows wrong from right in this case."

Bellamy looked visibly offended as he released his grip on my arm.

I let out an exasperated sigh, as I shook my head. "Jasper needs help. We can at least radio back and see what's going on."

When no one objected, Sinclair pulled the device to his mouth and spoke into it, responding to Jasper's pleas for help.

The response that we received made my blood run cold. Arkadia wasn't safe.

Whatever Jaha had brought back here- The City of Light, that chip that Raven had been talking about, it had taken over.

I felt like I was going to be sick as Jasper explained that Raven had taken it, and that he was bringing her to us. We needed to help her.

I let out a frustrated yell as I kicked at a rock, pulling at my hair as I paced back at forth. Raven had told me about the chip, that Jaha had given it to her. I should have helped her, kept an eye on her. Instead, I was too focused on Bellamy and everything he was doing. I had let her down.

Sinclair's voice hummed in the background as he directed Jasper to where we were. They would be here soon, and I would have to face the demons that I had allowed to overtake one of my best friends.

"I don't understand it." Sinclair announced once he had finished speaking to Jasper. He was looking around, hoping someone else knew what was going on.

I calmed myself down enough to turn and face the group. "It has something to do with a chip." I explained, my voice strained in frustration. "You ingest it, and it takes you to something called the City of Light." I then shook my head. "I have no idea what that means thought."

Sinclair nodded as he let out a small sigh. "We'll know soon enough." he assured. "Be ready."

Bellamy, who had been standing next to me then spoke, but not to Sinclair or I. "O., wait!" he called, already making his way toward his sister who was packing her stuff feverishly into a bag. "You can't just leave."

Octavia let out a humourless laugh. "Watch me."

"You heard what Jasper said on the radio!" Bellamy argued. "Arkadia is not safe."

"What Jasper said sounds insane." Octavia snapped, still fumbling with her stuff. "Pike's gone. I can handle myself."

I was about to step in, to tell her that just because Pike was gone, didn't mean we were out of danger. I stopped myself, however, deciding I could talk to Octavia on my own. This was a conversation to be had by the siblings.

She threw the strap of her bag over her shoulder. "Grounders burn their dead." she announced, finally looking at her brother.

I realized that where she wanted to go was right back to Arkadia. She wanted to burn Lincoln's body.

"I know that." Bellamy promised. "And then what? Where are you going to go?"

Octavia shook her head. "You don't get to ask me that!" The whole group was watching now, our attention pulled from Jasper's oncoming arrival to the sibling argument.

Bellamy dropped his voice slightly, but it was useless as we could all still hear him clearly. "What more do I have to do to prove that I'm on your side?"

Octavia's voice sounded broken as she spoke "Bring Lincoln back."

With that, she pushed past her brother, making her way to the exit of the cave. Before she got very far, she turned back to her brother. "Turning Pike in doesn't make you one of the good guys Bellamy." she bit out. "You did that to save me, and to make Avery happy." her eyes quickly flickered toward me, meanwhile Bellamy kept his adverted to the ground. "Not because you thought what Pike was doing to the Grounders was wrong."

Bellamy finally turned, "The Grounders were starving us out!" he defended.

Octavia didn't miss a beat. "Because you massacred an army sent to protect us!"

"That army could have attacked us at any moment and you know that." Bellamy shot back.

"But they didn't attack. You did that." Octavia exclaimed. "You were hurting, and you lashed out because that's what you do." her voice softened ever so slightly. "There are consequences, Bell. People get hurt. People die, your people." she looked like she was on the brim of tears. "Monroe's dead. Lincoln is dead. Avery almost died because of you." Octavia looked at me once again, her sad eyes meeting my own. "How would you have felt then?" she questioned, looking back to her brother.

She didn't wait for his response. "Maybe then you would have realized what you did...you'd now how I feel."

Without saying anything else, she turned away from us, making a quick approach for the exit.

"Tavia!" I called, already pushing past Bellamy and making my way after her, "Just wait!" I begged, reaching out and catching her arm as we emerged into the cool dark night.

Miller briefly looked over at us from where he stood on watch. I gave him a quick nod, letting him know we were fine.

Octavia spun to look at me, "Don't even think about defending him." she warned, her voice cold. "You almost died because of what he did."

I nodded, releasing my grip on her. "I know." I promised. "I'm not going to defend him."

"Then what do you want?" she questioned, her tone more curious than accusing.

"Let me come with you." I offered, giving my best friend a pleading look.

"Not happening." his voice came from behind us. He had followed us out here.

I spun around, sending a glare in his direction. "Stay out of this, Bellamy." I snapped, "You don't get to tell me what to do."

Before Bellamy had anymore chance to object, the sound of a vehicle approaching filled the night.

"They're here!" Miller called, drawing the attention of the others still in the cave.

I turned from Bellamy, shooting him an angry look before watching headlights illuminate the forest.

The minute the Rover came to a stop, a figure was jumping out of the passenger side. My jaw slacked slightly in shock, it was Clarke.

She met my eye, giving me a quick nod. However our greeting was cut short as Jasper's voice cut into the air. "I need some help!" he screamed. "We need to get her inside before she wakes up!" he was carrying an unconscious Raven in his arms, and I felt my heart breaking.

I pushed my feelings aside as we all jumped into action immediately. I gave Octavia a quick look, almost as if to say I couldn't leave with her, not now.

"Were you followed?" Bellamy questioned Jasper as he approached.

Jasper shook his head slightly. "No. I mean I don't think so."

Bellamy let out a low sigh. "Here." he offered, taking Raven from Jasper's grasp.

I rushed to his side, taking a hold of Raven's hand. "We've got you." I promised. I wasn't even sure if the real Raven could hear me, but she needed to know she wasn't alone.

As we rushed toward the cave, I could hear Miller giving Bryan directions to get to the ridge to ensure we weren't followed. If the rest of the people who had taken the chip found out where we were, we would all be done for.

Like I had wanted to say to Octavia earlier, Pike may have been gone, but we weren't done fighting yet. We had a new enemy...and this one seemed much bigger than before.
